How to store shock absorbers?

I don't think it makes any difference, provided you remember to 'prime' them [hold them upright and fully-extend/fully-compress them a few times] to get the oil and gas into the right places before you fit them.

I failed to do this on some Bilstein gas-pressurised inserts on an Escort rally-car once. The handling was 'interesting' - in an epileptic-kangaroo-with-hiccups kinda way - for the first few miles.

As Tanuki said, pump them several times then compress them fully in an upright position and restrain them compressed, very large zip-ties are the best, after that you can store them horizontally or vertically it won't matter.
