Soren's Budget Single-Seater Crawler

looks pretty good! what do you think final cost is? :)

well it's not done yet, but I suppose it'll never really be.. :) But I should be under my goal of 2000£ so not bad really. Could've been quite a bit cheaper if I had sourced my tubing a cheaper place, but couldn't find anywhere cheaper with the quite heavy wall thickness that I wanted.

I'll go if you do :D

Was that a challenge? :D

age is on your side.

Hehe yeah, but my age also tells me that I need to have several different toys, and keep changing them just for fun, and that doesn't really collaborate well with big expensive adventures! :D

A bit was done today, though not much. Got the winch wired up (and my workshop-tiger is keeping an eye on my while I work) and fitted a stainless wire to hold the fueltank down in its cradle when if I roll over:

Well.. Sometimes the best ideas come when you rest your head on the pillow. This was one of those moments :D

Wanted to add the extra pinion flange to the front output that drives the frontaxle. If I decide to get it registered at the only club which will let it run, being homebuilt and all, I need to have a brake for each axle, and on separate circuits. Its not in my plans right now, but would be nice to be prepared.

Well back to that great idea, I was thinking that surely I must be able to use the flange and maybe a bit of axle from the PTO that came fitted to the mog gearbox. And low and behold it was darn near perfect for the job! Both shafts running on 6206 bearing meant that lining the two up was a piece of cake. So I modded an old bearing so I could weld through it, and burned a piece of splined shaft to the front output:

And the bearing refitted:

Having avoided modding the output shaft of the gearbox means the bearing isn't resting on the weld, so should the weld ever let go, all that would happen would be the splined bit of shaft coming loose. Burned it in quite well though, so doubt it :)

And now with flange on as well:

Sealing it is quite straight forward too, as I'm again able to use some of the parts off of the PTO. This'll happen later..

Finally the day arrived where I changed the fluids in axles!! I know it sounds like a weird thing to look forward to, but it does mean that it was now time for its first drive after being reassembled!

And here's a bunch of pictures from the test drive:

And a bit of front flexing to make sure the tyres clear the front wheel arch when compressed and turned, and everything is how its supposed to be :)

Just painted the bonnet tonight so will be able to fit that tomorrow. Really liking how it looks, and it is so satisfying finally being able to blast around it again!

Today the bonnet was fitted:

Essentially completing the look. Now its back to sorting various odds and ends. Decided to keep going on the second brake as it'll act as my parking brake for starters, and also enable me to brake the front wheels only while spinning the rear wheels. I'm sure a situation will occur where that is a bonus ;)

Caliper bracket made this evening. And I also got it and the caliper painted. When it comes to reassembly the stacked nuts will of course be replaced with purpose made spacers once I get the position dialed in with washers so that I can determine the final length of the spacers. Remember no cad here, all done by trial and error! :D

Caliper mounting done:

And then I moved on to some levers. Decided there was no reason to reinvent the wheel, when all you need to do is modify it :)

So reused the old Mog levers for parkingbrake and locker engagement:

As you can see the lockers work via hydraulics, and I figured I might as well keep it that way, would like to be able to control them individually though, so that'll be done using a couple of valves. More on that later.

And finally I got the mastercylinder for the parking brake placed, next up is bracketry (again) :D

Can't wait to see it properly in action

Me neither! :)

Well I've kinda done did a Nige.. Sunday I manged to whack my RH Pinky so hard the nail is all blue, then yesterday at work I got my left hand tangled in a tyrechanging machine whilst moving it, spraining the middle finger on my LH :im-ok-smiley-emoticon:

This doesn't stop me though, only slows me waay down :D

Did manage to sort the mechanism for releasing the pawl on the handbrake today though.

Originally it had been a rod going from the lever, but seeing as I have bent that it will no longer work with a straight line of travel, as the rod had. So some washers concaved by knocking them in the center, a small RS bearing and a bit of wire saw me MacGyver the sh*t out of this problem :D

Eventually painted it all black so it wasn't so in-your-face shiny

Hehe. I'm guessing you're younger than most here? Old TV show where the hero could cobble together anything with duct tape and a Swiss army knife... now used as a verb: To tinker, using items not normally used for this purpose.

We're going to a display our Landys at a swap-meet tomorrow, so took the day off today cause we have to set it all up for tomorrow. Did manage to get some stuff done this morning though. First off I mounted the lever console and got the mastercylinder for the parking brake fitted, which needed a small bracket made. Then I did the copperline and de-greased the brakedisc and fitted new pads. The system was bled and I now have a functioning parking brake!

Ohh and Ross, I just turned 31 and did see MacGyver as a teenager. However back then it seemed like we were bombarded with reruns of old Yank TV shows here in Denmark. These days it's obviously "Reality" TV thats the new craze, though i'd much rather the old TV shows :)
