another rear wiper motor story

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd have a go at finding out why my 110's rear wiper wouldn't run, removed from door, wired across a spare battery & it runs :i-m_so_happy: [but won't on 110 with wiper blade on the glass]

so dismantled the motor part, retained all the bits, got some grease into it via motor shaft hole & park switch hole, so far so good, doing this outside in my driveway [big mistake] popped the armature/shaft back in, then the brushes which have a 'n' shaped spring clip to keep brushes on commutator, got one side in, then spring decides to go for a flying lesson, heard it 'ping' as hit the 110's rear door, can I find it, not a chance  disappearded in to bit of garden alongside driveway, moved 110, swept the drive, no sign of the spring, not happy

got to buy a new wiper motor tomorrow, this old one's shaft to wiper arm is almost seiezed up, so not a totally loss.

my type of motor is No Longer Available [prc4612 - see photo] got to buy the later [300tdi - amr3676] & adapt my wiring to suit the new type of motor. more to come when I get to fit it.

You need to get hold of a metal detector or large magnet, I hate them clips they always make a dash for it.

When I fit them and "C" clips I try to cover them with a rag so they don't ping.

They are a pain in the rear end.

recovered the original wiring from old now deceased motor, wiring is cleaned & ready to live again supplying the new motor, got to source a 3 pin econoseal plug, I can get that locally too.

opened up the original motors park switch, I don't know if any one has done it before.

1st photo the internals

all plain colour wires.

brown

green

black

the plug end which matches pre 300tdi vehicles has 5 wires

2 x black = earth for motor & park switch on one pin

red = 12v feed to motor

green = signal from dash switch to park switch

brown = 12v feed from dash switch to park switch

to connect to the later motor. [300tdi on]

red = to motor

black to motor & park switch earth

green to park switch White/green

brown to park switch brown/light green

new motor acquired :i-m_so_happy: through my local LR parts supplier [had it in stock]

3 pin econoseal plug on order,

need to source the 2 pin plug for the motor connections

PaulMc do you know what plug I need please ? see 2nd photo,

would prefer to use the correct part if possible or I'll fit 2 2.8mm female spade terminals to the motor wires.

Paul, I found this thread -- https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/rear-door-wiper-connector.294166/

using my original rear wiper harness & with the new connectors, I've made my own conversion harness [same as STC1825 but at a lot less expense, photo 1 below] for the new wiper motor.

connected & tested on my 110, it works :i-m_so_happy: so happy so far, just waiting on the outer nut, grommet, washers to arrive then I can get it fitted to the rear door.

my converted harness fitted to new motor, photo's 2,3,4.

  • 2 weeks later...

finished the new rear wiper motor fit today, had to adjust the rear door wiper spindle holes as the new motor shaft is thicker than the old original motor & sort a hole for the motor anti twist screw, straight into door frame.

this new motor is a 300tdi item AMR3637. got to source the trim cover & screws, think that'll be a ebay job.

I fitted one of the later arms to my 110, which still has the original 1989 wiper motor.

As you say, the newer arm fits without problem.

I was having trouble finding the original side-pin rear wiper blades, other than Genuine from a main dealer.

new motor has had it's work load increased over the last few days, also obtained the correct trim cover for the motor, but I think I need to re-orientate the assembly to get the cover brackets on the horizontal level, as the cover isn't siting square to the rear window.

also a few years ago I bought one of simonb's rear wiper intermittent wipe/wash relay kits, that is still working fine & means the new motor isn't running continuously in bad weather.

  • 2 years later...

further to the above rear wiper motor swap, is the wiper arm drive spindle able to be removed ?

mine seems to be partly seized, it will work but on if moved by hand,

will be having another go this week,Oh & I broke the washer above the back door when refiting the nut after making sure it wasn't blocked up, so got to buy a new rear washer jet now,

further to the above question, no the wiper spindle & its plastic tube is not easily removeable, the tube is clipped/locked into the metal body, so I'm looking at another motor now cos this on is dead, so off to ebay or ring my local LR parts man in morning to see if he has one in stock. not a very productive afternoon, But I did fit the new rear screen washer jet, so that bits fixed at least.

wiper motor installed & working, this one is LR part LR078424 it supersedes AMR3676 & it a direct replacement,

the small 2 pin connector on this new motor only has one wire + positive to it,  but the wiring for the amr3676 motor doesn't need any changes.
