Clear tint and a dog.

No, not gone off my rocker again(yet anyway :) ), but I am just home from a 3,800+km round trip from Weert NL to Oliva Espania and 3,000 of those kilometers with a frozen left arm and knee.

Why?

I stopped in some services in France between Lyon and Montpellier, parked opposite a camper van full of people, under a light and just before I walked into the shops I turned to look back thinking about the horse I was transporting down and as I glanced I saw a guy standing beside my van, then heard the small front quarter window smash, ran straight for him but he jumped in his waiting car with driver and got away before I could grab him, called the very helpful Gendamerier who took a full statement along with the partial registration that I saw.

I have now come to the conclusion that the dog comes with as much as possible and the windows will get a clear tint film in order to keep the glass whole and slow them down and to save me freezing the next time!

This happened at 8:30pm on a Sunday evening, not even small hours of the morning :o

This is a bit of a word of warning thing for travellers as Gendamerie said it's the same MO where they have been seen to target foreign vehicles as they know there will be "stuff" to steal, whether it's the satnav, passports, cash or a mobile phone.

Safe driving folks :)

Bad luck old chap. Had the same thing in Spain a few years back - fly window on a T2 camper, happened in a tiny window of time that a pal was away from the bus - like they were watching, and they went only for hard cash.

It's such good luck though that you looked back and prevented them from getting anything. Nothing worse than that feeling of violation.

Surprised you didn't have a roll of gaffer with you, isn't that LR MO ;)

Gaffer tape and plastic bag lasted 10mins :(

Carglass in Gandia fitted a piece of perspex but it flew out within 50kms @ 90kmh :o the noise from the plastic was worse than just the turbulence from the open window!

It happens...

And a lot more than we all want.

Yes - dogs etc. help but be careful, James, our German Sheppard, once took hold of an arm and did not let go until the owner of said arm nearly bled to death when he tried getting in the 110...

The Gendarme was not too impressed when the guy wanted to press charges and told him that if he really wanted to do that he'd just walk away, have a coffee and come back when the dog was finished with him as that would save a lot of paperwork...

At least they didn't try to steal the horse - that has happened before...

oh man, that's really pants, theft grinds my gears to the max, it makes me very angry indeed, was it your landy or another vehicle?

It was in our little 2 horse Renault master, great little van!

If I had just parked randomly in the dark I might have expected it but I chose my spot carefully, that's the bit that guts me the most, they were just so blatant about it.

Punishment for crime like this isn't anywhere near as severe as it needs be, chopping off hands is much more of a deterrent, that and public stoning in city square, but we are far too civilized for that aren't we :-(

Arjan, it is far too common, and unless we highlight the pitfalls of rest stops then unfortunate others will also fall victim!
