Green Laning in Wales - Brecon Beacons & Snowdonia

Hi all,

Arranging a green laning trip to Wales for this summer - wondered if anyone has any suggestions of the best lanes to drive in both Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia?

Any lists of lanes or maps that anyone has they would be willing to share (please do PM if you prefer), or particularly cracking ones that you would recommend not missing out on!

We are planning quite a big trip so have plenty of time to drive lots of good lanes responsibly and take in the Welsh countryside!

Does anyone know what the status is of the Gap Road and Sarn Helen in the Brecon Beacons and if it is open still, and if so when? We are a sensible group that only like to drive these things when you are allowed to!

Many thanks in advance for any info anyone is able to share

The section of Sarn Helen within the BBNP boundary is marked up as a restricted byway on the OS maps - suffice to say its status is disputed! Drive at your own risk...

Outwith the national park boundary there are plenty in the general area - staying on the Sarn Helen theme the southern section between Neath and Banwen is open (though subject to a season TRO if I recall correctly). There's also a good selection to the north of the Beacons, around Llandrindod Wells/Rhayader localities.

Unfortunately ALL the lanes in the Brecon Beacons National Park are out of bounds now. Can't comment on Snowdonia, but here you are about 10 years too late :-(

sarn helen in neath is now closed (aberdulais) used to be seasonal but all gone now. Gap road and sarn helen in BBNP closed too (police regularly watch the sarn helen)

there are a number of small link lanes that are open but tbh if you going to run wales may aswell start a builth wales and hit the strata area but there have even been closures around there too.
