Dtfrith
Hi all, New defender (new to me) just come back from looking at a nice 90 and have put a deposit down. I have run a hpi check and it all looks good. I am just trying to work out if the correct engine is on the paper work and also when I am putting the reg into insurance quotes is it showing the correct engine (1989 model with a td5 engine and gear box) any clues on what to do? Thank you in advance.
western
1989 should be a n/a diesel or TD or a V8, sounds like it's had a engine swap to a Td5.
Jocklandjohn
TD5 was much later - see this. Get the VIN number and see if you can ID what it SHOULD be with this VIN decoder.
Happyoldgit
I think you need to find out what engine is actually under the bonnet first.
Dtfrith
I am going back there tomorrow night, it is a td5 under the bonnet but I need to get numbers etc. Not sure when the swap was completed. Will any of this cause issues with insurance?
Maverik
Hmmm a Td5 in a 1989 era vehicle is of course do-able, but its not one of the regular engine "upgrades" there's considerably more wiring etc to work out when doing this as the standard 89 wiring is very basic - while not improbable I'd be looking at the vehicles identity very carefully to see if it has any other 89 features.
