stevo
Having changed the oil cooler pipes recently on my 300tdi, when the bottom hose was disconnected, the oil was sludgy and thick.... Its definitely worth a flush out of the oil cooler while the pipes are off.
Les Henson
The strange thing about diesel engine oil is that it thickens with age. I removed the sump plug on a transit a couple of years ago and the oil was so thick when cold that nothing came out. A simple oil change took me a couple of days and was rather expensive to the customer. Les.
Snagger
Age, or use (ie carbon build up)?
stephencdavies
At the oil change i disconnect the oil cooler, bung the bottom hose and fill it with diesel through the top. if left a few hours it will break down any sludge.
stevo
So, doing that is a 'thing' then My oil is changed every few months, but the 110 is fairly new to me - even so, I was surprised by the sludge
Snagger
It does need clearing every so often. Part of the problem is that the breather pipe connects to the intake pipe, so oil vapour builds up inside the intake tract. A separate catch tank would stop that.
