Hello all , ive just done the 2.5 na out and my old disco 200 in , its taken a day or two but tonight I turned the key and typical 200tdi it started like I was warm . Now things went down hill from here plumes of white smoke and tickover high went to blip throttle no response even on pump arm its self after a couple of mins she went full chat and I turned her off on key , let her settle started her again wow full throttle switched off again now am I being thick but ive no air filter system fitted at the mo just air straight into turbo will this cause a prob or is it the pump engine has stood in workshop for a while , also I bodged leak off or fuel return to tank it is restricted wiil this cause a back up of fuel so any help will be more than welcome cheers NO RUSH

I dont think air going direct to turbo would cause this. your fuel return needs to be unrestricted as the pump draws far more fuel than it needs, most is returned to the tank at a feirce rate of knots. put the return into a bucket and see what i mean.

also make sure you're using fresh fuel, old fuel is a bugger.

you might be getting air into a fuel line, possibly from the steel connectors on the fuel sender unit or the top of the water seperator. if they are rusted they can pull small amounts of air and has quite a big effect on engine speed

Yep , what they said , FIP stuck open . It will need stripping and cleaning by a specialist . You are lucky it stopped on the key - the last one I had this happen on self fuelled on the engine oil , not a pleasant experience. Having the air filter (& breather) disconnected is probably what saved it
