  1. Found out what it was, the last tappet at the rear of the head instead of being 8 thou was about a quarter of an inch, the car drove ok and over 3 mile the tappet opened up to without exageation 1/4 of an inch the locking nut was tight never known of it before readjusted all the tappets runs lovely, and found out that the ERG has allready been blocked, saves me a job.

  2. With reference to funny noise as mentioned in my previouse topic, a popping noise coming back through the air intake, could it be the EGR valve stuck open and exaust gas pumping back into the air intake, I think there is a electronic device with wires, on the pipes coming from the outlet manifold, any help would be appreciated from you experts out there. Regards Tony

  3. Help ! Iwas driving along today when the engine started making a popping noise and a lack of power I took it to the garage and had a good look at it at first it sounded like a inlet manifold leak but on closer inspection the popping noise was coming from the air box, took the lid off and found that instead of sucking all the time there was a force of air coming from the engine into the air inlet could it be a inlet valve slightly jammed open, it starts ok and drives with slightly reduced power, no smoke from the exaust or anything, what is the gap between the valve and the pistons. Its a 95 300TDI auto I only had it a month and done 500 miles since purchased its done 119500 and according to the service history it had a head job and skimmed last year, by the way it didnt over heat or any thing, any comments would be appreciated.

  4. Im quite a big bloke Im 6'4" and have a false left leg, and I have differculty getting my foot under the dash, the question is is there any quick fix to move the seat back a couple of inches over and above the normal adjustment. In the old mini's you could move the seat subframe rearward.

  5. Hi guys, I am looking for some advice from those that know about batteries and electrickery stuff (not my strongpoint).

My 1999 Disco 1 V8 has just a standard battery fitted but since I have fitted a lot more electrical stuff I think I need a more powerfull battery to supply all the stuff.

I have fitted twin 13" Kenlowes (set to run on full speed(boost) when needed as I think cooling it down faster is better)

Light bar on roof with four spots

Inverter to run laptop etc ( only really used when vehicle is running but wired direct )

coolbox Powered through ciggie lighter circuit

It has aircon fitted so obviously the fans will run once the engine warms up causing more draw.

It let me down the other day!

I was stuck in traffic in the heat on the motorway,

    I had coolbox running,

Laptop was being used by passenger through inverter,

Normal lights were on as I had turned them on as had just been in tunnel,

Kenlowes running quite a bit due to stationary for ages

    Aircon fans running

    Aircon being used

    Satnav plugged in

    phone charging

    Radio on.

Car was running fine, pulled into services turned off went bought drink etc came back and no start!!!

Unplugged everything/ turned everything off - inverter had already been turned off when stoped. Still no start!!!

Noticed that as soon as the ignition was turned on that the engine was obviously still hot enough to need extra cooling as the Kenlowes and aircon fans were firing up.

Decided to stop those using electricity when trying to start by pulling fuses for all of them.

Engine turned slowly and started yippee!!! replaced fuses and cracked on no problem.

Sorry for the long winded explanation just wanted to be clear what happened.

It has not had a problem the last few days and never gave me a problem before - the battery is healthy and the alternator is ok too, just think it was too much for the battery to handle?

    I dont want to go down the second battery route for two reasons;

    1. I very rarely will be in that situation were I am using everything to that extent and don't think my usage justifies the expense of twin batteries.

    2. I have very little room under the bonnet as I have lots of lpg gubbins behind the passenger headlight where it would go easiest and the innerwing on that side is where I have put the kenlowe electrics etc - the only place really is where the washer bottle is that I can see.

I think replacing the original spec battery with something more powerfull would solve the problem, I have been looking at the Optima range of batteries as they have got good press generally, athough any other suggestions would be welcome.

Would I be best going for a "red top" starting type or would I be bet going for the "yellow top" starting and deep cycle type to cope with the times when I am using lots of stuff (especially the inverter) ?

Any help advice would be appreciated

    Thanks in advance

    Firemannotsam

I would get a higher output alternator.

  6. I just looked at the service history for my 95 300 tdi and it said the oil was replaced with semi synthetic 10 40 , but I always use 5 30 fully sythetic previously will it run any better if I put fully synthetic in.

  7. Never driven a trooper so can't comment on the comparison but my 95 Auto Disco didn't seem at all heavy on the throttle pedal, as light as any modern car I've driven.

    Is yours the fly-by-wire model?

no it do'snt have a potensiometer its a cable, I dont think it has a EDC or what ever you call it.

  8. I've had a Disco 95 300 tdi auto for 3 weeks now, what I have noticed is that the throttle pedal seems quite heavy compared with my old car Trooper 3.2 petrol, is this normal.

  9. thanks guys yes same engine. and clutch is lined up spot on. i was thinking it was last bit into spigot bearing. will let you know how i get on in morning

The spigot bearing hasnt collapsed, or broken has it.

  10. I know that taking the EGR of the engine is common place but is there any side effects blocking it off, what sort of fuel cosumtion can you expect afterwards, and I understand that there is some wires comming from some of them do they go to some kind of ECU.

  11. Is it an original LR Head unit or an aftermarket unit? If it is the original unit, check the model as some are compatible with CD changers. I have a LR head unit and Alpine CD changer and it connects via the plugs under the passenger seat. You must be careful to get a changer that works with this type of connection. It varies a lot.

Got it sorted cd player arrived from ebay, but it didnt work, got worried, borrowed some of those things to release the radio pulled out and found that the cable was not there but found it down the back of the dash plugged it in and jobs a goodun even works with remote controls on the dash.

  12. Today I done my first repair on my 300 tdi, it was to replace the the little round spring that had snapped in the tailgait lock I understand its a common fault. I ordered the part from a guy on ebay £4.50 the spring arrived and in the ad it says complete with instructions, it says undoe the back panel undo three screws and undo some link bars, what a bloody palava it took three and a half hours to complete the job and Iv'e been in the security industry for years and used to repair locks and as a hobby I used to build drag cars, so I'm not without experience. you need three hands and to be able to work pliers with your teeth to do this job, has any one here done this repair, and whats the electronic gizmo on the back of the rear speaker pod.

  13. Hi Im a new Disco owner I would like to say hello to you all, bought it last week 95 300 SE traded a 3.2 Trooper petrol as part payment very pleased with the Disco slow compared with the Trooper but far better on fuel. Just a ew questions about the radio and CD changer firstly, I think the radio is a Phillips it has a square digital readout in the top right of the unit would this be a Phillips, secondly there wasnt a cd player in it so I bought one of Ebay but it hasnt been delivered yet, theres a cable with a multi plug under the passenger seat I thought they were under the drivers seat, are the cd players compatible with all land rover radio's and does the multi plug run every thing speakers included, only my old sony used to have seperate phono leads, and lastly some times when I press the remote volume button on the binacle to turn the volume up it some times changes the station and other times it works fine is this a common fault or am I unique with this problem. Thanks in advance
