  1. I remember viewing a number of Defenders at a dealer of used Land Rovers in Somerset. A number of cars featured pop riveted plates on the bulkhead !!,

Despite this I still bought a non pop riveted 110 300 TDi which served me well for around 5 years without a hitch.

As a temp measure a fix with filler of some kind may buy you extra time.

What a brilliant idea, why did I not think of that? I've bought the filler now, so I may as well get that done, but I think I may go for pop riveting further down the line!

  2. Ah how big is the hole? possibly dill it out with a hole saw, do the same the other side, put your finger in each one with a load of grease on it and wipe it all round inside, and then fit 2 suitable sized rubber blanking gromitts. Then you have permanent access for future maintenance .

Hard to say as I haven't stripped it back yet, hopefully no larger than an inch!! That's not a bad idea...

  3. Sounds good to me -be sure to use the rust treatment, and only on surface rust -anything more needs to be removed.

Hammers and blocks of wood are good enough for any dents on a LR :)

Brill. Would you recommend any rust treatments in particular?

By that do you mean, placing the block of wood behind the wheel arch and trying to knock the dent out using the wood to spread the force? Or is there more to it than that? Bit of a bodywork beginner, haha.

Just be aware that the damage will continue as they generally rot from the inside out.

But for a cosmetic repair that will do the job fine. Not structural as far as the MOT is concerned for example.

Mmm, I'm not sure why it's rotted where it has, I need to check the windscreen surrounds, see if water is pooling there or something... Or as you say, it could be from the inside out. I'll try and weld it as soon as I can, but I can't do it at the moment and want to both make it look better, and prevent water from getting to that spot!

It's just passed an MOT with the hole in it, so I don't think the rot is a problem (MOT wise) quite yet, if it grows it may be a problem however.

  4. Hi all,

I have a small, rusted hole in the bulkhead, just to the inside of one of the bonnet hinges. I was going to weld it initially, but I can no longer get hold of a mig, so I'm coming up with alternative suggestions...

I'm currently looking at Evo-Stik's hard & fast metal epoxy putty, and my plan is to strip all the paint and rusty metal off, apply an anti-rust solution (any recommendations?), allow that to dry, then fill the entire hole with the epoxy putty (and thereby hopefully prevent it from coming away at the edges). Conveniently enough, my 90 matches smooth white Hammerite perfectly, so I was then going to paint over the putty with Hammerite.

If it doesn't work out, I'll just have to get it welded in the future, but can anyone see any problems with my current plan?

I'd appreciate any advice you can give me!

    Cheers,

    Will

P.S. I also have a reasonably large dent in one of the wheel arches. Any tips on getting dents out?

  5. Hi everyone,

Apologies if there's something similar out there but I couldn't find any!

So I'm biting the bullet and getting my dream car - A Land Rover Defender 90 CSW. I've found one which is absolutely wonderful: 1988, 200tdi Disco engine swap, loads of money spent on it after various issues in the past (praying that the jobs were done well), and just generally a smart-looking truck.

My problem is that I'm a bit of a beginner, and although I have a few friends that know a lot more than I, they're all working when I have my viewing - and it's a fair drive away! So, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips with regards to what to look out for? I'll keep trying to have someone who knows something come with me, but I don't want to miss out if I can't! I should be going to view next Thursday!

My other question would be, which company is best/cheapest for a young driver's insurance on a Landy?

    Thanks in advance,

    Will
