[Slack handbrake after towing?]

Did my Good Samaritan bit yesterday and towed a car out of a ditch. It’s the first time I’ve used low range on the 2003 110 TD5 dual cab since I got it in July.

When I backed up to remove the towing sling, I put the hand brake on and the lever travelled almost to vertical but did work. 

What would have caused this and is it just a case of adjusting it again?
