  1. The thermostat elbow on your engine is 'blank' because you don't have A/C fitted. You can see some other 'extras' in the pics as well: A/C compressor, belt, ...

The wires on A/C models lead to two temp switches:

    - a normal closed one - it opens and disables A/C when the engine overheats

    - a normal open one - it closes and engages the electric fans in front of the radiator to assist cooling when the temp. goes over 100C

Thanks- spot on - that explains it - thanks

  2. Hi

For the sake of £4 i decided to change the thermostat on my Landy Discovery as the cooler days are approaching fast. I checked out the technical archive http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=10681

and all went well except the technical archive shows two wires at the base of the thermostat housing. Mine did not have these! Are they fitted on different models and what are they for?

    Please advise - thanks

  3. We have a 96 300 TDi auto and had our front pipe (cat version) changed at ATS to a straight through pipe. The ATS "Bible" showed two versions for my disco one without and one with a cat. Both had the "flexi" joints within the pipe so the joint was not a problem. The new pipe was a bit more expensive but they made an error when they quoted me and i got it at cost price (about £90).

I dont have any garage facilities etc.. so i relied on ATS to do it and it made a vast difference to the performance.

    Hope this helps

  4. Thanks for the replies.

I had the tracking / wheel alignment sorted at a local garage and that was out. It now feels more positive but even on a straight road / no cambers etc.. then its still off-set to the right. I can live with this but just wondered if anything needed adjusting etc... I dont use it off road and its a family car and a caravan puller so it does not get too much abuse etc..

    Any futher advice welcomed

    Regards

  5. Hi all

Just to give you some feedback. I recently bought my first 96 Disco 1 auto and was a little disappointed with its up hill towing capabilities to say the least. After reading all the excellent advice on this forum i decided to :

Replace the exhaust down pipe with a straight through de - cat version.

    Replace the lift pump

    Replaced the crankcase breather

Fitted an uprated intercooler from Brunnel performance

    Blanked off the ERG

Fitted a performance air filter (did have some reservations about this though)

Full service including Sedimentor clean out

Checked timing (as its a fly by wire version and i cant do anything with the fuel pump)

and boy does it shift now - its scary at times!!!

Thanks everyone for all your advice - i am well chuffed with the reults

  6. Have always removed them on my trucks, never had any problems.

    Hi all,

If you dont have a pit / lift - is there a jacking / safety technique to get at this Sedimentor as i have asked my garage to do it twice now and they say they have dont it but there is no evidence that its been touched at all and i cant see the point of not cleaning it out if the fuel filter is being replaced on service.

What are all the sealing ring part numbers/ does anyone have a drawing?

    Thanks

    Andy

  7. be prepared for the inevitable 'wet arm' though :P

The plastic drain tap on mine was extremely tight and I didn't want to risk breaking it, so removed the top bolt with the bowl full of diesel. I can still smell it on me now... :(

Worth leaving in situ as unlike a filter even when pretty full of gunk it still allows fuel through the system, whereas a filter would block up pretty quick without the trap in place.

    Good luck

    Thanks everybody

  8. Hi all

I have decat the exhaust, blanked off the ERG, just about to fit an upgrade intercooler, and had a full service except the sedimenter was not touched (still covered all over in dirt / deposits etc..) I am going to get this done soon but unless you can get underneath the rear end easily then its not easy to clean out and i have read that people have had many problems.

My question is that can the sedimenter be by-passed and maybe just change the fuel filter more often?

    All advice welcomed - thanks

  9. We had a Defender 300Tdi with a power problem. Ok, it did have 600 000 kms on it, but the engine and turbo had done only about half that. I noticed when I test drove it that as I lifted off to change gear there was a big puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. We took out the intercooler and found it just about blocked with burnt on oil deposits. It took quite a bit of cleaning including soaking in engine cleaner for the weekend. After that it went just fine.

What was happening was that the turbo pressurises the system, and when I lifted off, the pressure in the system could not release quickly. This caused the injector pump to think that the turbo was still boosting, so it would overfuel momentarily until the pressure dropped, causing the puff of black smoke.

hi all we have a 96 300 Tdi auto Disco that had power problems when towing. I put a straight through exhaust on it, blanked off the ERG and i have just had a upgraded drop in intercooler delivered from Brunnel Performance. I will let you know if there are any further improvements but the exhaust mod made a vast difference so the CAT must have been clogged up.

Does any one know if the intercooler can be fitted without taking the fan out ?

    Thanks

    Andy

  10. sounds like a good compromise, I've had plenty of experience of rusty bolts that shear off :(

    Hi all,

I removed the EGR from my 96 300 TDI auto but i sprayed the bolts daily for about a week with WD40 and when i came to do the job they came out ok. I bought a blanking kit including top hose etc.. from e-bay and all was fine. I am not sure i can see or feel any benefit but i was persuaded by others that this was one of the things to do in order to ensure better performance etc..

I have changed (de-cat) the front exhaust pipe and this made a massive difference to the performance and running, i am waiting for an upgraded intercooler and when i fit that then i dont think there is much more i can do to improve torque for towing purposes as its a "fly by wire" system.

Maybe i could put in a performance filter but i am not convinved it would add a great deal?

Any one else got any more performance suggestions to inprove torque etc.. for towing purposes?

    Thanks

  11. I don't think the "Cat" for TDi's is a catalytic converter like found on petrol engines.

It is called a particulate filter which I believe is just fine mesh that traps the soot from burnt diesel.

Removing this makes the engine breath freer.

I had the particulate filter removed and have just had the rear box removed as it was rusting out the back from the exhaust on my 300TDi. Not much extra noise. Just running the standard centre box.

I know what was in my 300 TDI auto version and that was a lot of black stuff that prevented my Disco from perfroming whislt towing etc.. - I ordered a straight through down pipe from ATS (probably not the cheapest way of doing it) but they would not fit customer parts anyway. The Disco now performs very well and being an auto does not tend to cut into overdrive so quickly - it seems much smoother and quieter! no more black smoke on kick down either.

    Regards

    Andy
