[Discovery 1 won't engage reverse! help!!]

If your are positive you can still engage 5th gear and still have drive in 5th, there could be something wrong with the safety mechanism that prevents you accidentally engaging reverse gear coming down directly from 5th gear.

To try and see (to a certain degree) if the mechanism is still working, change into 5th gear and shift back to neutral several times (vehicle stationary, engine off, leave the door/window open, quiet environment). You should hear a "click" when you to shift back to neutral if the mechanism is still working.

Edit: when yo shift back to neutral you need to go back to the left at least where the 3rd and 4th gears are (if not 1st and 2nd to make sure). If you move the lever back and forth in 5th the safety mechanism won't disengage.

I have the same issue. Just done this check and got the click as described. Gears 1 to 5 engage and drive. Will not move into or engage reverse
