if i am seeing well the gasket is broken from no4 cylinder to no8 valve guide hole
that would cause alot of smoke in the engine

does it starts for split of a second?
could be crank sensor
last time i had somthing similar was fuel pump
and check fuses

reverse is acommon problem not easy but can be done
whining from back could be alot of things
check tyres feel them if thay are rough

pads and discs probably
you have to check if the discs had been dameged or not

are the shoes clean after replace the seal with brake cleaner or solvent
if there still oil in them they will do the same as yours

Has anyone just tried changing the fuel cap? Maybe causing vacuum in tank? Ours does the same. If you leave it for a couple of minutes it starts again. Just leave the cap off to release the pressure. Have tried this on our other freelander and that fuel cap is fine, never has a build up of pressure when you take the cap off.

and check also the mesh filter in tank

standard with spring washers and i would go with 10.8 tensille to be sure
as i seen some types that are 8.8 and was cr-p

check the gear liver from top of the box
maybe needs some adjustment and check if there is alot of freeplay as the aluminum part get eaten from the sides
and again on top on the right there is the sping were holds the lever to stop maybe needs replace

common problem on the 300tdi to blow the head gasket from the rear in no 4 cylinder
had done a couple and in drive wise yes would be slightly out of power but had never overheated
