  1. The Military men can comment more exactly on the fitting for your crossmember, but I'll just say 'watch your hitch heights'.

If you put the 50mm ball at the correct height for your boat trailer you might be able to leave the NATO hitch on, but it will more than likely obstruct you putting the boat trailer hitch on the 50mm ball.

I think you will find it's one or the other, not both.

An alternative is to start paying more money for a Dixon Bate adjustable hitch, with two 'sliding' plates, one for each hitch. It's still 'one at a time', but they are easier to change over (and pinch, so never leave one on the base unit while the vehicle is unattended).

Thanks for your response. I think your right, it's got to be a Dixon Bate.

  2. The plug should be the same, have you pulled the rubber cup shield away and removed the rubber push in plug hiding the terminal block on the back of the bulb?

There are two sets of connectors, one set on the bulb (halogen three pin)red/yellow/blue and another set about 12 inches down the extension lead into the headlamp recess which terminates in three bullet connectors. three seperate wires coloured red yellow and blue.

The real problems may begin when the replacements aren't quite the same profile lens and they don't sit on the headlamp rim at the front.

    Thanks Pete,

Got the headlight out and found what you said. The trouble with it now is the rubber seal is missing, this must have caused the sealed beam to get water ingress. Now the 3 pin plu will not fir on with the rubber seal provided with the replacement halogen. I will have to search for an original rubber seal that fits insde the 3 pin rubber cover.

    Thanks again for your reply.

  3. My 1990 Defender 90 has just failed it's MOT on offside head light not having the correct beam and requires replacing. I bought a set of halogen conversiion head lights.

    1. having trouble releasing the old ones.

    2. The plug on the back is not the halogen type. Do I have to rewie with a new plug as well? Also the side lights are seperate, is there a wiring diagram that gives the terminations for the bulb plug?

It seems that everything I buy that should be straight forward isn't. Is the miliatry version much different with regard to replacement parts?

Any help would be appreciated as I have to get it retested by Friday.

  4. MOD useĀ  (used?) two different types of tailboard hinges, the ones on older 90/110's had pins ont the hinge, and went into two brackets welded to the rear crossmember ( you can buy bolt on ones the same but you'll have to drill for them). And the newer, possibly only on XD models, had the loop on the hinge, and the pin bolted to the rear c/member. You will probably have to drill for these also ( I did)I recently removed the olderr welded type, and replaced with the newer type, It is possible, so it depends on your hinges really. If you need any more info let me know.Chris.

Thanks Chris, I'll get the drill out.

  5. I have an Ex MOD 90 that was a hard top and I bought it as a soft top. It came with an unfitted tail gate. The problem is the tail gate brackets that I bought from ebay don't line up with any holes on the R/H side and the L/H side the threaded side of the bracket doesn't fit around the back as there appears to be small upright behind the rear of the chassis where the matching holes are.
