  1. So I've been restoring a 2 door etc for years now... Slow side project. In that time I cannot for the life of me remember how the back of the seats are meant to be bolted to the crossmember they sit on.

There is a bracket st the rear of the seats with 2 diagonal bolt holes that line up with 2 holes in this crossmember, however the crossmember appears to just be a thin walled closed section. Bolts don't seem to want to screw into it unless there is some special thread bolt I've probably lost along the way?

There's no chance of getting a nut behind them.due to the closed section so its just a blind hole they attach to....

Anyone have any ideas? :) Cheers!

  2. Evening All,

Quick question, I'm now getting back into the swing of the restoration of my 2 door classic after a period of laziness...

Noticed something odd this evening. I'd never bothered to check my VIN number before, and in doing so it all made sense up until the character relating to engine, gearbox and drive side. My VIN states it as being a LHD model but the wheel is most definitely on the Right.

On my V5 it does state that it was "registered or used abroad" or some such. It also states that it was first registered in Feb 1981 but declared as manufactured in 1981.

I'm not entirely sure how this stacks up. I rang the DVLA to re-sorn it and the guy said it was marked as an imported car. But if it was manufactured in 81 and registered in feb 81 then it only leaves a period of 1 month it could have been abroad... this seems unlikely. It has all the hallmarks of an '81 such as the newer upholstery and rubber matting.

Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened with it? And also is there any telltales to look for to check if it was indeed converted from LHD to RHD at some point ? Nothing looks obvious or sticks out.

It's all very strange... I'd like to get to the bottom of it though as it will bug me now!

    Thanks,

  3. I really can't remember, but, as it wasn't rotten, I'm guessing higher up in the engine bay? (rather than down at rear)

Same AC paper bowl filter is now at the back next to the tank. Pump and filter have their own little ally box.

Throwing the old tank meant I had to fit a home made restrictor in the return line.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Got some holiday to take before Xmas so will have a play with it next week and see what's what.

  4. Hi all,

For a while now I've been slowly restoring an '81 2 door classic. Had I have known the amount of welding I'd end up doing I may have thought twice!

Anyway, the vehicle arrived with a ruined 3.5 v8 with twin strombergs. At some point I assume the pump and filter had been changed as it came with 2 unknown flow electric fuel pumps and some naff inline filter.

I'm either going to drop in a second hand 3.5 on carbs or possibly 3.9 efi. does anyone have any info on the factory standard fuel system setup for these? I wasn't particularly impressed with how the aftermarket pumps were wired up and would prefer the factory standard route. I will be running all new fuel hose throughout so the location of the filter would be good. i believe mine would have had a mechanical fuel pump as standard? not sure about the later engines or what the best / easiest way forward might be?

    Any opinions most welcome!

    Thanks,

  5. Well I guess this is a good result. Looked again at the fuses, none appear blown but swapping some around and they are working again. I guess the fuse must have blown somewhere it's not visible in the plastic.

A lesson to myself to rule out the simple things properly! Mods can this thread be sent into the ether? Cheers.

  6. Afternoon all, I did a quick search but came up with nothing related to this...

On the way to work this morning I tried putting on the front fog lights (factory standard) on my Td5 Disco and nothing. Rear fog is working fine. I seem to remember swapping out the fuse from the fronts when my indicator fuse blew one journey (having deemed my front fogs to be of less importance!) but upon arriving at work i checked the fuse box and all seems fine so I must have replaced it....

Both lights were working not long ago. I've not had a chance to check both bulbs yet but it seems unlikely that both would blow together. When i toggle the switch I get nothing, the relay isn't latching and the telltale isn't illuminating. If one or both bulbs were blown would the circuit still close and activate the relay?

Since it's not the fuse I guess the relay itself (under the bonnet) could be dead or the switch on the instrument cluster. I'll check the lamps themselves tonight too.

Are there any other points to check? Or has anyone else had this happen?

    Thanks,

  7. Give e a break, its twenty years old and I've only had it a few months. Had a few other more pressing things to sort out was considering chassis work for next summer but its bit me in the bum already :(

It doesn't look that bad tbh. It looks in better condition than mine (which is also 20 years old and had been treated to waxoyl). It's a common rot spot.

  8. They are a bit fiddly to take to pieces but you can do it. It's worth taking it apart to have a look before splashing out on a new one. If you think it's already broken there's nothing to lose and you can fiddle with the gear mechanism inside them.

The one on my 200tdi stopped working and a replacement was stupid money. I did manage to get mine apart, re-seat the brushes and after re-building the thing (at least 3 or 4 times! It's an annoying fiddly job) it does now work.

  9. I had this happen to me but it was the trumpet that was totally rusted through.

My MOT man pointed out the problem but said it was only a mud shield so not important.

Went to Scotland and hit a pothole, whole thing snapped shoving the shock through the inner wing and breaking the expansion tank off its mounts.

Had to drive 600 miles home with no shocker.

Just show MOT people don't always know what they are testing!

This exact same thing happened to mine. The turret had rusted through but also the top of the spring seat had rusted right through too. One bumpy lane and the shock went through the inner wing snapping off the header tank.

When I came to look at it the other side wasn't far behind so I ordered two new turrets, two HD turret rings and then rebuilt the spring seat myself. In my case it was only the top surface of the seat that had rusted so it was fairly straight forward to rebuild with plate. I managed all the work by myself with just the wheel off and the truck on stands so it's not too tough a job to do.
