  1. Just bought a '99 V reg TD5. Absolute bargain even if I do say so myself. Quite a few bills with it, one that caught my eye was one that cost £2000 2 years ago for springs, brakes, intercooler pipe work etc etc. Bought it for £2995. My questions are is it worth getting it remapped? What are the pros and cons of doing this? Roughly how much will it cost and where's the best place to go?

I have recently had my 2000 'v' reg td5 (119,000 miles) remapped by JE Engineering. I opted for their stage 1 package which is a simple 30 min job of taking out the ECU, putting in their own fuel chip and remapping.

What a difference to the Diso. I had it done due to the amount of towing I do as the increased tourque and BHP the basic package gives is quite sufficient. The performance when not towing is now quite unbeleivable. Low down torque now lets you pull away without the usual struggle and use of revs, and when you hit about 1700 rpm the instant power on tap is a giggle everytime.

Check out their web site to see what else they can offer, but I wouldn't hesitate in getting yourself booked in for a stage 1. They had an offer on when I had mine done (£238 + VAT).

They are a decent bunch of guys who know what they're doing and that is worth the trip alone, don't let your local garage do a bolt on job. They would probably charge you more as well.

You won't believe the difference, and mine is better on juice now too.

With the age of your disco, as with mine, unless your going to keep it long term it probably wouldn't be worth opting for a stage 2 due to the cost.

As for the EGR valve, I asked about this and the Tech at JE advised that it wouldn't be worth it unless your valve is sticking anyway (he will look at this for you as he did with mine). As I had enquired about the EGR valve when I initially e mailed them they had machined a blanking plate ready which turned out not to be needed due to the Techs advise. Now that is service, and I am sure alot of other tuners would of said ' Oh yes, fit an EGR blanking kit ££££'.

PS unless the disco is running rough blanking the EGR valve doesn't make a noticable difference really.

    Happy Disco ing.

  2. I had a similar problem recently, fitting an arial.

1 Find the centre point of where you need to drill and use a centre punch (or a nail) to mark it

2 place the pin of a school compass (or better still a dividers, which has two pins) set at 17 mm and scribe a line

    to obtain a 34mm circle

3 Cut a 32 mm hole on the centre point

4 Using a round file, file away excess material to the scribed line

    5 Fit 34 mm item

    Hope that helps.......................

Thanks for the advice, it may be the only option.

  3. I have just bought a pair of genuine roof bar extensions for the D2 but have hit a snag with the otherwise very simple job of fitting them. The fitting instructions state that for each extension a 34mm hole needs to be drilled. This would be very easy but for one thing, I cannot find a 34mm hole cutter for the drill anywhere. 32mm, 35mm are common in all hardware outlets and I have trawled all the local garages/bodyshops in my area and no-one seems to have one.

Has anybody else fitted these bars? I am contemplating cutting a 32mm hole instead, as the 'foot' for the bar will still fit through this, and the sponge seal will still compress around it to seal out water etc (well as much as they ever do).

    Anybody got any advise?

    Cheers.

  4. I need to replace the injector harness on my d2 as there is oil a plenty dripping from the red plug that goes into the ECU. I know that this is a common problem and a simple fix.

I have been told by a garage that the replacement harness is only the 'internal' section and that it is not the whole harness including a new plug. This seems a little pointless to me as the plug and wires leading to it would still be contaminated. Surely the injector harness is one complete section from injectors to Ecu?

Is there the option of only replacing the section of harness under the rocker cover, where the unit commonly fails? If so what would be the point in only replacing this bit and leaving the rest of the rest of the harness 'dirty'?

  5. I agree that the D2 is a very capable vehicle with Traction Control but it is even better with the centre diff lock operational. The traction control hardly kicks in once the diff lock is engaged.

Don't be too dismisive about the D2's suitability for "serious offroading" - it is veritable Wolf In Sheep's Clothing. Lose some of the interior weight and put some decent bumpers on and away you go.

It is also very comfortable and the heater works !!!

    Regards,

    Peter.

Hey, I agree. The D2 is superb off road, been there done that and still doing it. Departure angle is obviously an issue even with decent bumpers for serious work, it can make a good ground anchor though!

Regarding the weight issue, I like my pies ok! you sound just like the wife.

Regarding the comfort, you sound like a wanna be rambler. :P

Regarding the heater, I have a wooly hat incase I ever get another Defender.

    Cheers,

    Jon.

  6. Just a not so quick note to highlight a problem on my D2 which may be quite common.

Last week the SRS light on my dash suddenly came on (red) indicating a problem with the air bag system. After doing all the usual technical stuff, like switching the ignition off and on and driving through potholes hoping it would bugger off again, I took 'Disco Tony 2' (don't ask, the missus named the d2, but at least she's into landys), to the local independant l/r garage. As usual they went straight for the plug in option and wired the d2 up to the super computer. This came up with the answer straight away, great. A new drivers seatbelt pre-tensioner was required I was informed by the technical wizard looking at his god like machine at £130 plus labour plus VAT, not great.

As it was only a problem with the air bags and only the bit what pulls the seatbelt tighter in an accident, all new fangled stuff which landys coped without for decades, I made my excuses (no money) and left.

On my drive home I started to think about how quickly the disco had been plugged in and diagnosed and how it was so similar to when I once had a problem with another car (German and ending in W), not long ago. On that occasion the main dealer had plugged it in after I went in on 'limp home mode' and said I needed all maner of bits at a cost of many hundred pounds. Long story, but a retired garage owner mate of mine (proper old school) looked at it, spotted & replaced a cracked hose for 15 quid and job was done. Computers eh! 'Q' are garages too quick at replacing parts rather than looking at simple possible causes and solutions?

So on returning home with disco (and armed with where the problem was) I started tracing the wiring harness and checking plugs, and hey ho, 1 x broken wire under drivers seat about 20mm from plug for pre-tensioner. 1 new conector (30p) and problem was fixed (light now off again).

Now, the problem I want to warn about is that on inspection, the harness had been getting slowly worn through every time the seat was adjusted backwards/forwards. Landrover had fitted it too tightly and had routed it over the steel wire that releases the seat from its runners. I have now re routed the harness under this and there is plenty of slack. I would recomend having a quick look, especially if like me you have a diddy wife and the seat is adjusted often.

  7. cheers dave, the pendle rack sits high enough to tow with though, so I'll go with it and just keep an eye on the straps and replace when the time comes. I haven't seen anything else that will hold the bikes high enough when the caravan is on.

  8. thanks for the replies, also I believe that some 1999's and 2004's have difflock, please correct me if I'm wrong. rocky

I beleive that some early models can have difflock re activated as they have the workings in the transfer box and the wiring in place behind the dash etc, but the procedure to re-activate is a bit of a job. Not really worth it in my opinion as the d2 is extremely capable as it is with its t/c. Check out discovery2.co.uk this guy knows his landy and shows the procedure and what is involved. I would only do it if you intend doing some serious off roading (but then I would buy a Defender instead).

  9. I went for the tow bar mounted option and bought a Pendle Discovery Rack for mine. If, like me, you have the backplate with multiple height fitment available, you can mount it higher than the tow ball/pin to give you a couple of extra inches clearance.

I've only ever had the trailer attached when carrying 2 bikes on it, though. It wasn't a problem, but I can't advise on carrying 4 with a trailer/caravan. Might be worth an ask at your local bike place. I went and tried it before I bought it, so was sure it was the right thing for us. It also means less load on the rear door, which has enough trouble holding it's own weight up without adding 4 bikes to it!!

The only down-side to this rack is that you can't open the rear door once it's on and loaded, so make sure you put anything you are going to need on the journey right behind the back seats so you can reach it without removing all the bikes...

Thanks, i've checked out Pendle bike racks and have gone for the spare wheel strap on rack, holds two bikes and the kids can get chucked in caravan (after they've cleaned them!

  10. Hi all, just registered to the forum and was wondering if anyone could recommend a 2-4 bike rack suitable for fitment to the spare on the back of a disco 2. I tow a caravan so it will need to hold the bikes high enough not to fowl hitch/jockey wheel etc.
