  1. Well it was that time of year again today, and she failed!!!! BUT...... only on o/s/r and n/s/r anti-roll bar rod ends and front track steering rod end o/s!!! Parts cost £22.00, labour £35, and ticket £45. First time ever as a car owner that an MOT for me or my missus has come in under a ton. I'm well chuffed (considering last months £300 clutch job!!). So taxed and tested for another year, and the bank manager is still speaking to me. It just goes to prove what many people state on this forum, that if you buy a second hand Disco, make sure you get a good un and pay that little bit extra, I thought I'd overpaid last year when I saw what some were going for but now I'm convinced I did the right thing.

I FECKIN LOVE MY DISCO! :D:D

  2. or just spend a few quid changing them then you know they are good. its not expensive and for the piece of mind well worth it

And.... wot he said ^^^^^. Absolutely right, it's not the biggest job, and not the most expensive, we sell copper and kunifer (copper nickel iron), 3/16 on a 25ft roll, there's aprrox 50p difference!!! Price for me inc fittings, less than a tenner, worth doing the job even if it just on an 'advisory' basis from the MOTman.

  3. I've just had a brand new clutch kit fitted, and for the past two days the car has stunk of what smells like sulphur, it's gotten stronger each use of the car, it smell's like those little party popper thingies (<technical term!) I know a little welding was done aroung the clutch fork area, and I dont know if the smell is something symptomatic of the products used, is this smell normal, will it go away, and if it's deadly will it kill the passenger before me??!!

  4. So, to assist other owners here, what did they find & rectify?

Sorry I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to mechanics, I tend to blank over a bit when people start talking about mangle flange overiding locking spigot bearing bushels etc etc, but I'll try to describe roughly what the mecahnic told me...

The clutch was really shot, and also the fork had pressed deeply onto the friction plate causing damage and resulting in the fork splitting, there was also mention of a spigot of some description which was also replaced, and what I could make out, he said that the holes which house the fork had become oval'd instead of round, so the new fork would have just moved or jumped in the oval shaped housing, these ovals were 'made good' and a new fork fitted, a new friction plate and I think he said pressure plate or facing plate and bearing ring were fitted, I think that the removal and refitting of the gearbox has eliminated the reverse engaging problem I had, they never mentioned when they dropped the car off that they had done any extra work because of the reverse problem. Sorry I can't be more specific but I am a novice, thanks to this forum though I am tackling more and more problems with the car instead of running to the mechanic everytime, and gawd bless my car she keeps giving me these tests to improve my knowledge of diagnosing and fixing little problems. I really appreciate the responses I get on this forum, and I can't wait for the glorious day when I get to answer somebody elses problem!!!

  5. Call them back and ask them to have a quick look at this problem, if there is one. It's much easier to diagnose hands on.

Panic over fellow forumites, car returned at 7.05, pedal slides up n down like a cheap Amsterdam hooker with the dirty French sailors on shore leave. Every gear engages sweet as a macadamea, and REVERSE IS BACK!!!! Only £300.00 all in, Bargian! Thanks very much for replies tho guys.

  6. That would only be possible on a LT77 gearbox (200 series Discos).

On R380 gearboxes (which are fitted to 300 series and D2s) the switch is screwed all the way in, there's no adjusment needed.

And he said the gearbox problem appeared before replacing the clutch (which is probably done by the garage as we speak/write).

But your idea is good. Could be a seized reverse switch.

Wot he said ^^^^, the car is in the garage at the mo, they just phoned to say 'might be a bit longer than first quoted' had originally said pick up 10.00 and return 3.45, but didnt pick up til 10.30 and now said back about 5 ish. I'm hopeful they discover the issue, diagnose it as a quick simple fix and hey-ho I'll be back slinkin thru the gears in no time!!!

Any other ideas on the problem possibilities would be greatful received. thanks guys.

p.s. the reverse lights where still coming on as I attempted to slot into reverse, and there is a clunk from underneath thru the window, so something is trying to go into place, it's just not clicking into place and staying there at the gearstick.!!

  7. My clutch has been ready for replacement as the bearing is worn and causing the plate to have nasty contact, it has been driveable...just. It is booked in today for a replacement, I have bought a full kit and was looking forward to being back to 'normal' by the end of the day, However, last night whilst preparing to back onto the drive, I had no reverse gear, all other gears go in and it'll drive from 1st to 5th and back again, but reverse will just not 'engage', Half fookin killed meself (then the missus who I chose to do the steering instead of my 9 yr old boy) pushing it 'up' our drive. Can anybody tell me if the gear issue is linked to the buggered clutch, if so I'm expecting it to be okay once I get the car back, or is the gearbox on the same way as the old clutch. Got loads to pay out this month, incl MOT and Tax on top of the clutch I cannot bear the tought of a new Gearbox.

    Sorry forgot to mention, 300 tdi 95 'M' 2.5, Manual 130k.

Hi there, Mine name is John Jones better known as JJ  , I have received a 200tdi and a 300tdi Discovery for nothing on Freecycle :P both need a fair amount of work 200tdi needs welding and a very small job on the gearbox  , the 300tdi needs wheels (but hoping to sort that out later with the old owner) and a couple of mechanical jobs on the engine & front axle  . 11. Jobo, yes i have had it out to play many times since the suspension setup

Tear it up, those are the bolts where the rear seatbelts were mounted, so there is re-inforcenent there, what im hoping to do when i do the cage is put a hoop inside and two strengtheners and mount everything to that including the harnesses for the 3rd seat, i expect there are some controversial view on my "third seat" but if im honest if u have a day out laning chuck ur mate a video camera and theres no better place to be sat!

Love the third seat, it'll look even better once the tripod mounted rear-facing Bren gun is fitted!!!! Think you may have started something there Mr A.

  13. Maybe a daft question but, is the tracking an issue with MOT?? Mine's due end of March  and I'm trying to eliminate as many problems prior to sending her in, the tracking is something on my list, but I'm just trying to prioritise what needs doing on the list for the MOT and what can wait.

    cheers

    Jonny.

  14. Maybe a 'how long's a piece of string' question but here goes...

looks like my clutch is about to join the choir invisible, I can get a brand new kit for just over 60quid, but need a few good educated guesstimates as to how much it'll cost to get it fitted. Roughly how much work is involved, how long it should take and roughly how much I should budget to get it replaced. M reg 300 2.5 Tdi. 130k.

    Thanks,
