  1. i have a disco 1 3.9 v8 es. recently because of air an oil leaks i replace the valley gasket with a new composite one, at the same time i changed all the hoses around the plenum including air inlet and vac advance also swapped a leaking injector. The engine now runs 100% better however 2 problems persist. There is a constant missfire, very visable on No 1 when setting the timing as the strobe kept stopping and also when the engine is warm if i am in gear and hold the disco on the brake such as when at a junction the revs almost die and i have to let the brake off a creep forward a bit to let the revs back up. I did have to rebuild the distributer and wonder if the air gap could be a problem as it was a bugger to get right. The timing is 6 BTDC and i set the base idle about 600rpm. any thoughts would be appreciated. (unless anyone out there is so bored they want to do a free megajolt install)

  2. thanks for all the info guys, I just thought i would explore while i have problems to fix. maybe when i get anouther toy to use daily i may play a bit more with this one.

  3. IMVHO it is an enthusiasts thing and if you haven't got time to read up on it I would suggest it might not be for you. A new AFM will be a lot quicker :)

thanks , will look at it again when i get my life back.

  4. I have a 94 discovery 1 es 3.9v8. Looks like my airflow meter is knackered. would this be a good time to get a megasquirt. I have read some of the threads but to be honest my mind is on other issues at the moment and most of it went over my head. has any recently fitted a megasquirt if so was it easy to fit and where is the best place to buy. I am in birmingham.

  5. Just had exactly the same symptoms on mine. Went through the whole lot, plugs, leads, rotor arm, coil, amplifier etc...

Then handed it over to a professional who discovered the bob weights in the distributor were worn. One new distributor later later and she was running as sweete as a nut. Well almost. Due to all the popping and farting that ha been done, the AFM had given up the ghost so a new (second hand) one was called for. Hopefully it will go through an MOT on Monday.

BTW, they diagnosed the bob weight issue by taking the distributor out, filling it with releasing oil, putting it back in and then running the whole thing up. Ran fine until the releasing oil ran out.

thanks for that i will try it and see afm sounds about right too if it is going to go wrong might as well be expensive

  6. hi all i have a 94 discovery es 3.9 v8 with a single point gas installation. i recently had a problem with poor running which turned out to be the air hose between the air flow meter and the plenum, changed and ran great for about 10 miles. then i lost power, kept stalling and had to limp home. now it will start the revs go straight to about 1500 them almost imediately drop to about 1000 then the engine starts hunting and eventually dies. i know i need to run the hotwire diags and will do as soon as i get time, has anyone experienced this fault and if so what caused it. Finally does anybody know a trustworthy mobile mechanic in the south birmingham area with a fault code reader who could sort me out as i am realy short on time at the moment.

    thanks for any help

  7. hi all

I have a 94 discovery v8 3.9 es. I aquired it recently and it failed the mot on emissions, it was running really rich. I found that the problem was the hose between the air flow meter and the plenum. The end had been hacked off and there was no seal. After buying a new hose i found that the reason the old one had been hacked was because of the gas conversion. Between the hose and plenum a collar has been added ( i believe it contains a venturi for the lpg to mix with the air) this collar makes the hose too long so when connected the hose is severely kinked. does anyone know of a after market hose that will fit correctly or any other solution.

    Thanks in advance
