  1. Alright lads. Hope that everyone is keeping well and Covid free.

Got a bit of a problem with the defender 300Tdi.

Couple of months ago I started hearing chirping noises under the bonnet, changed the serpentine belt and alternator, and it did seem to quite down a wee bit.

Last Monday me waterpump went, just finished fitting it and started the bugger up and the tweeting noise is back again.

Has anybody got any ideas what it could be. Appreciate any info. I know others have had the same problem but couldn’t find the link.

    Many thanks for yer help.

  2. Many Thanks for all of your help lads.

    Very much appreciated.

Was getting a wee bit worried about the DVLA, read lots of wonderful stories about them..

The same when I took it across to the Netherlands. Cost me 3000 quid to import it, then they wanted another 3200 road tax every year. Till we complain to one of the bosses, telling him it was a campervan not an ordinary landy.

After another inspection by the Dutch DVLA they let me import it on a camper plate. Still costing me 800 quid a year.

    Robbin BUGGERS.

  3. Cheers Arjan.

Its a RH Drive, and was on UK plates.

It's still on Dutch plates and insurance lucky.

The thing is it's on a camper registration in the Netherlands, would the DVLA do the same.

Think I'll have to go down to Swansea and see em.

    Cheers Mate.

Do you know if the DVLA, has to do an inspection on the vehicle.

  4. Can anybody please help.

Just finished work, and are moving back to the UK. My defender is on a Dutch plate at the moment, as nobody would insure me here in the UK.

Has anybody got any idea or experience in importing cars back to the UK.

The DVLA site is like a bloody maze, telling you to go to this link then that link.

They have got a helpline cost 3 pound 60 a minute. Robbin BUGGERS.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers Lads.

And there was I transported back to my diving days for a split second!, looks a small neat unit... could be cheap enough to import without duty? postage is a killer though.

Yeah it’s ridiculous how much they want for postage.

  6. Well lads, i have finally found it at last.It is the panhard bushes, like you all said.

Got underneath once again and got the wife to turn the steering. There's not all that much play in them but just enough to get the wheels wobbling. Have had a look the dealer in Reno has a set so I'll get on to them tomorrow.

Once again many thanks for all of your help. I owe you all a pint. Will let you know how i get on when i have fitted the new bushes.

    Once again Many Thanks Appreciate

  7. Hi Fridgefreezer.

The front suspension is pretty much standard. Just got koni raids on there all-round, and airbags under the rear.

But that shouldn't make that much of a difference i think. I've had them on there for more than 10 year's. One thing is I'm thinking of is the tyre's, I've BF Goodrich's under. I'm planning to move the front to the rear and see how it goes. Like Neil said he had a problem with them.

    Will keep you posted

    Cheers

Have you spent half an hour laid underneath it going from front to back checking and inspecting everything - every moving part, every bush, every linkage, every mount? Even if you're not a technical guru it can be very helpful. Just throwing it at dealers who are used to servicing commuter vehicles is unlikely to spot expedition-style problems.

If you find anything you're unsure about you could post some pictures up for us to pore over.

Many Thanks for all of your help, very much appreciated.

Have checked everything underneath uj's, wheel bearings, trackrod ends, panhard bushes, steering arm. Had the wheels balanced, new swivel pins + bearings. Still no improvement. It's starting to really P ss me off now.

    Maybe new tyre's ????

Anyway, it's weekend lads so have a brilliant weekend, and hope the sunshine for yer.

If you think of anything else please let me know.

    Cheers

  9. Hope that you folk's can help me.

Iam presently on a RTW trip.

While we were in China i started to get a a bit of wheel wobble at around 55 mph. Managed to get to Phnom Penh to get it into the Landrover dealer, who so called checked the wheel bearings tracking  and everything else what goes with this problem. They told me it was the wheels which was badly buckled.

So having put the landy in a container heading for Vancouver, we went home for a month where i bought a brand-new set of wolf wheels.

We arrived in Vancouver a fortnight ago, and had the wheels changed and balanced. Still the same problem. Now the wheel wobble had started to get worse so i booked it into the Landrover dealer in Rocklin California, who told me it was the swivel pins, and two trackrod ends which were knackered. So they put the new swivel pins in plus the new trackrod ends.

Now the problem is it is still there but now where as worse, as it was.

Has anybody any ideas what's going wrong and how to fix it.

Many Thanks for all of Help

  10. Good morning everyone.

Just need some help with the electrics.

In China at the moment on our way down to Malaysia, then back home via the Stan's once again. I have 2 Batteries one for the Defender 75 amp deep cycle and one for the camper at the back 75 amp of the shelf Russian thing. The leisure battery is constantly empty after standing for 24 hours. The leisure battery is for a small fridge and what led lighting. I have a 140 watt solar panel but is not a great help due to the fact it doesn't get much sun cause of  all the smog or its peeing it down. The leisure battery is only 75 amp, (the odessey deep cycle packed up in Russia). My question is if I buy another 100amp battery, so that means I'll have 3 batteries,  1 for the Defender and 2 leisure for the camper, will a 65 amp alternator be able to charge them all.

    Appreciate

  11. Hi Steve.

Just crossed over the border today from Kazakhstan to Russia. We will be in Biysk in a few days. That is the beginning of the Altai. Will post some pics in the days to come. But the internet isn't 100%. If you ever get the chance do the Pamir highway do it for sure,it has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth and the people the most friendlist.

  12. All right lads.

Very sorry for the late reply.Cant get internet everywhere. Managed to get everything sorted out.

Ordered a new light switch via Craddock's. It arrived in Bishkek within 20 hours brilliant service. Changed everything over within the hour and the job was a good en. We are now about 200 mile from the Russian border where we will be crossing over into the Altai region, supposed to be very nice. Anyway many thanks for all of your help very much appreciated.

    Good luck to all.

  13. Having a small problem or at least I hope a small problem. When going up hills in 3rd or sometimes 2nd looking in the offside mirror I see black puff's of smoke coming out of the exhaust now and again. No problem otherwise, pulls okay and runs 100%. What do you think take it to a landy dealer to have a look or leave it as it is. I will be in Almaty next week, before going onto Mongolia for 8 weeks.Bye the way is a 300Tdi

    Many thanks for your help
