  1. Well, I don't know about it being documented anywhere, but this is what I would do:

    1. Add a new wire (of the same colour) from the relevant fusebox terminal to a handy location in the engine bay.
    2. Mount a relay in said location.
    3. Attach the new wire to the feed terminal of the relay.
    4. Find the wire coming from the switch into the engine bay, and re-direct this to the on terminal of the relay.
    5. The other side of this wire should still lead to the headlamp, attach this to the output terminal of the relay.
    6. Attach the last terminal of the relay to ground.

So you should end up with something like this (simplified circuit):

All sorted, went for the straight swap of the switch......will put the relay on list(long) of "things to do".

Once again thanks to all for advice.

  2. Looks like I'll be picking a new switch stalk up tomorrow from Keith Gott, just down the road.

On second thoughts if these things melt regularly would I be better off putting in a simple toggle/rocker switch ? Has anyone out there done this as an alternative? Any recommendations?

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

  3. Was the caravan still attached (electrically)? Was there any change if you unplugged the caravan electrics? What year defender?

    Cheers

    Peter

The caravan was attached electrically when all failed, when I pulled over I disconnect caravan and tried lights on vehicle but no joy, still did not work. We did have a problem with caravan indicators initially one of them did not work so I was driving before the problem with only one working.

When trying to fix lights after failure, I took off cover and managed to get the indicator working on the caravan so I could use hazards....drove home on hazards and holding main beam on manually....blinding all in front of me :-(

    It's a 2001 100 TD5

  4. Help, Defender 110 TD5, 2001

I was doing a good deed and helping a mate get his newly acquired caravan home. Did all the checks before setting off with van in tow, indicators, side lights, brake lights....all OK.

We set off, all ok and but as it started to get a little darker on the motorway i switched on headlights.....they worked for a while and then I noticed the dash light were out....oh and so were the side lights and headlights. Main beam only worked on flash mode and would not stay on when switch via the stick.

Exited the motorway ASAP.....check fuses all seem ok, checked relay by switching the radio relay for lights relay, no joy.

Anyone out there got any ideas?

  5. Hi, need some advice.

I need to get hold of a new section of wheel arch, NOT the bit attached door bit or the mudguard bit but just the middle section mounted on the rear panel - Grey plastic. My wife thought she could get around a fencepost but did'nt quite manage it

Any idea where I can a get the part number for the item and where I might source it? I also need the pop-on studs for mounting.

    All suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

  6. A failed attempt to nick my 90 last night in fleet, hants.....starter motor is knackered and I was waiting for the new one to arrive..... but they did'nt know that did they..... so they proceeded to smashed the steering lock/ignition to bits....B@sT@rds!!! Team of 4 caught on camera but not identifiable.

Anyone know where to get an ingnition/steering lock assembly and how easy to fit?

It was sitting on the forecourt of my local garage at the time, would the garage be liable as it was under their care?

    Pi$$ed off in Fleet. :angry2:

    Cheers

  7. Hi Spen,

I had the same with my 90, it clicked etc so i used to give the solenoid a sharp tap (as they can stick with dirt and carp in) with a long ext bar i used for undoing the wheel nuts.

It worked for a while but i ended up getting a new starter motor anyway and was really suprised what a difference it made when starting as it flew round instead of the slow laboured cranking i had before so it obv wasn't up to much and prob just about hanging on.

If you need to get it home can't you bump start it and mess about with it there ?

    Mark

Mel, My 90 has the same symptoms and I'd like to see if the sharp tap works before embarking on taking exhaust off etc etc. Can you tell me where abouts you tap to get the solenoid "freed" is it the silverbit at the end of the starter motor?

    Cheers

  8. Hi, I was at Seven Sisters a week or so ago with Shires .....a great time was had by all.

I discovered that the selector for Diff lock was not engaging....with the help of a screw driver we managed to get engaged to have some fun but I now need to fix.

It looks like the pin/clip at the top of the selector rod is missing......question is .....is there an easy way to get access? or do I have to take lots apart?

    It's a defender 90 , 1990.

    Any tips welcome.

  9. Ok Update......changed the rear pads both sides, bled all around, now defo no air in system...brake pedal solid when I push down...no sponginess.

Took her to my local garage and offered small amount of beer tokens to put on thier rolling road. Tested all brakes and individulally they individually seemed OK.

Does anyone have any suggestions as why it might still be pulling to the right under braking?

    Any suggestions welcome!!

    Cheers

  10. Hi, Can anyone tell me what size socket I will need to undo the Hub nuts on a 1990 Defender 90.....it the rear axle with Disc brakes. I want t make sure I have the right tools before I start the job of replacing shot wheel bearings. I've looked at the Tech Archive and found some great instructions but no sizes.

    Thanks

  12. Thanks everyone for the useful feedback.....certainly a minefield

I'm now off to purchase suitable equipment and will ensure it's all correctly rated. As for Kerr....I'll leave that for now....with strops , bridle, shanks and my winch I should be ready for most things and if all else fails I'm sure one of you guys will help me out.

Thanks agsin for all the feedback.

  13. Hi everyone, I'm a complete newbie here. Pickup up my 19yr old Defender 90 a week or so ago and am preparing to do some play days in the next few weeks. I've sorted out recovery points with Jates front and rear.

I now need to invest in a rope or strap....What are the pros and cons of the following....

    Pro Comp Recovery Strap. 3in x 30foot. 30,000lb rating.

    vs

Kinetic Tow Rope - 8 metre x 24mm (2 ton Working Load Limit, 12 ton Minimum Breaking Load)

They seem to be about the same price but wondered if anyone had any recomendations.
