weel i guess all i can say is were all entiltled to our opinion and i think the 300tdi is a far superior engine. It appears i may have slightly underestimated Les's experience but he was giving it a good slating it appeared to me so thought i'd stick up for the 300tdi. I seem to have got him grossly wrong and my apolgies to Les.
But u have to admit it did make for interesting topic to read, and granted a very sore mouth for me!!

300TDi had more teething problems than the 200. 300 suffers from cracked heads, high water pump makes things a bit hairy, plastic plug on the thermostat housing is bad design, dipstick tube fractures, engine layout is poor, some genuine parts are worse quality than after-market ones, belt tensioner is out of line/goes through bearings, alternators have a habit of siezing for some reason, fan idler bearing is murder to replace, oil seperator leaks, you can't remove the two rear head bolts while the head is on the engine, rockers are too fragile, P-gasket leaks (even after fitting a new one), rear crank seal leaks (even after fitting a new one), erm......................

I have to say i think u either need to get a good mechanic or learn some skills mate, i've owned a 300tdi for best part of 10years, done about 100,000 miles in it, seriously abuse it offroad (run two hydrualic winches fom it) and never had half the problems u had.
I could list several easy cures to half the problems u've listed but it sounds like u wouldn't listen anyway!!
Al li can say is, either one which ever comes up at right price and fits the best. Wouldn't mind recommending a 300tdi to anyone mines been sounds, yeah had problems but nothing that can't be easily sorted!

i'm thinking same as above about why u'd want to, but in short i suspect you'd find it'd kill a 200tdi cuz its has the wrong torque patterns for a dual mass. Let me know if u do fit it what its like, be interesting to know!

hi
I wish i had known about these saley winches 12 months ago, before i bought two type r milemarker winches........ they're okay and thats about it. what really piddles me off is i can't engage hi gear or free spool without being ontop winch!! Wondered if anyone knew of a system or parts to do it with! Is there a website for these saley winches cuz i might be tempted to buy two of them instead of these darn type r's!!

you could try welding a washer over the bits left then a bolt onto that combination of extra weld area and heat often works............ or blood, sweat n tears?
