  1. Looking for a more practical solution than that used in recent years where we're mounted the bikes fully assebled on the roof. Makes the ferry trip fun with head to toe metric of c 2.9m, forces us into the HGV sections but French super market car parks are out of bounds, as are some of the autoroute toll booths. Luckily have always remembered the height issue well before dragging down an over-head gantry............

Am looking for a bike rack to fit over the rear wheel but most have a warning - Not suitable for Freelander, probably due to the third brake light pod or limited the rear wiper clearance.

Any recommendations from real world experience gratefully received.

    Mike

Try doing a search for Simbar seem to remember they do on on a Freelander spare wheel.

  2. Our Camel gets a complete oil change every service - gearbox, IRD and rear diff.

The TD4 gets services as per the service schedule - which often means top-ups rather than drain and refills.

    Have you checked your VCU?

    Cheers

    Blippie

Vcu Is that with the tipex test ?

  3. I too have a 3 door FL but have not had this problem - yet!

However mine does have the bars on the roof. I'm not sure of the thread size of the bolt but as a temp measure (and if you intend to keep a while and not fit bars) stick a blob of good quality silicone over the hole under the flap.

I have a 3dr with the roof rack and when reinstalling it i smother silicone on the body side of the bracket and tighten up. Wait till the silicone has hardened and trim off so none is visible.

The internal brackets are a pig if you drop them they fall into the body and its a bit off a stretch to reach them.

  4. Good afternoon

I will shortly be in the market to buy a new car and after narrowing down what i need from a replacement i have pretty much settled on a 3dr Freelander.

Initially i was looking at the standard range available considering both 1.8 and TD4 engines. I then came across the Serengeti model and fell in love with it straight away!!! I really like the extras on it, the wheels really suit the car and the privacy glass and dark interior trim look superb.

So having narrowed it down i have a couple of questions -

In relation to engine choice i am still undecided, i normally cycle to work which is literally 15mins down the road so my car often stays at home on the drive. My wife has a company car for which the fuel is paid for and for nipping around town on the weekends we tend to use this. Where my car comes in is during my days off which are often during the week, it will be required to tow and launch a jetski fairly regularly too. With this is mind i was leaning towards a 1.8 petrol as fuel consumption won't really be too much of an issue but would like to hear peoples thoughts??

This leads me onto my next question.....if i plumped for a 1.8 model i would more than likely have the had gasket changed straight away. I have read that there is a suggested upgrade/kit which is recommended and wondered if somebody could list the individual parts or point me in the right direction??

With regard to budgeting for a replacement HG what is the typical cost to do this in peoples experience?

Some of the Serengeti's have the rear bars which go up and over the hardback portion of the car, this is something i like however not all of them are fitted with them. If i ended up buying one without them are they an easy fit and what sort of price are they?

Is there a Freelander parts specialist on the net which you guys tend to use?

Sorry for all the questions, no doubt i will think of some more along the way and thanks in advance.

    Hi

I have a 3dr Serengeti on a 02 plate and am very happy with it,

The one thing i am asking is it an auto if so make sure the gearbox oil has been changed at 60k if not sooner as i have just had to replace the gearbox as i missed the 60k oil change.

Apart from that i have used mine for towing my caravan and it does it with ease no problems ,i was lucky as it came with the roof bars , side steps and towbar ,(steps and towbar for sale if anyone interested )

Go for the TD4 much better engine than the Petrol.

  5. If the engine speed increased on its own then it could be electronic.

I'm not sure how the torque convertors work in the freelander, anyone?

I'm no expert but had the same problems in a 2002 td4 with 70k miles from 4th to 5th gear and lower when going up hills , for me is was a recon gearbox. Is it due for an oil change and don't know fully whether an oil change would help at this stage, if the damage isn't already done.

as i say i am no expert so don't want to be the bearer of bad news just my experience.

  6. Hi, all i;m a newbie to posting on this forum but have found it useful a few times with problems i've looked up.

    I have a 2001 LR Freelander TD4.

My current problem is : My central locking has always worked perfectly well until a couple of weeks back when suddenly my drivers door stopped opening from the keyfob but still locked from it, then just the other day the drivers side back door has gone exactly the same - so now I have all four doors will lock from the keyfob, but only the passenger side doors open from the keyfob - I have sprayed WD40 down into the lock buttons, and have changed the fuse but it is still not working.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Having the same problem myself seems the latch comes as one unit and you can't change any parts inside so its a new latch when it fails .

It isn't a very hard diy job but rave manual for the pics would be useful and the part can be found on fleabay .

    Rgds

  7. Hi All

My first post here , after an unfortunate Gearbox failure resulting in a £1100 repair bill  for a recon i have sifted through this and other forums looking for posible weak points with my 2002 td4 Freelander.

Gearbox well it is the Jatco auto and yes i did miss the oil change at 60k and it failed at 70k so i do feel guilty , looking around the question of the Crankcase breather came about so i changed it . The Lander wasn't suffering any of the symptoms i have read about but i think prevention is better than the cure , it is an easy job as mentioned on here by several of you .

Are there any other points i should look out for ? i have done the oil and filter ,fuel filter have installed a k&n air filter i even changed the EGR Air Filter.

What about the rear diff oil ?

    Regards

    Nelly
