  1. chatting via email to Gwyn Lewis who does twin alt mounts for 200/300Tdi's and V8's, he has tried to make a mount for the Td5, there was a problem with re-routing the top coolant hose, but he is still looking at doing one at some point.... I'm sure he will find a solition, he usually does! he said to keep an eye on his Facebook page!

  2. Sorry for the thread resurrection I have removed all bolts from the Seatbox, outriggers, seatbelt mounts, crossmember and the 4 b***ard bolts to the chassis just above & in front of the fuel pump (Td5)

but try as I might the tub wants to stay with the chassis

There is sticky foam tape along the back of the Seatbox, but even the hi-lift can't separate the two

    Please help me!!!

  3. Go Ashcroft, go rear leave front alone, unless you regularly get stuck with that set-up (and then think tyres etc first!)

If you're doing extreme carp all the time maybe go front Ashcroft, but if so will need uprated CV's and 1/2's etc so may as well change from 10-spline anyway

    Just my 2p!!

I don't have a 'stuck' prob with rear Ashcroft and a (now-)working central diff on non-extreme MT's simex-a-likes would get me closer to unstoppable even with open front diff and that would make my winch purely decorative!!!

  4. Infinity exhausts made me a mani-back system tuned to my taste for £££s less than an aftermarket standard system, never mind an oem. Give them a call and see what they can do sounds a-bloody-mazing! Burbly at idle, quiet at cruise and "WTF!!!!" under hard acceleration!!

  5. Just a word of caution… the fitting of an inclinometer can subconsciously act as a little bit of a challenge… even as an iPhone app!

    Picture the scenario:

    Vroom… sphinctersqueeze… vrooooooooom… beeeepcrunch!!!

Definitive proof that gut… or the tail end thereof… feeling is better than an inclinometer app!!

    ;-)

  6. Sorry to resurrect a v old thread but.....

I have some spots I would like to wire in to the 3-way (on-off-on) carling switch so it works like my fan on the 3-way switch next to it: on, off and with main beam...

As my fans are switched on by a thermostat (a dual one - X-fan) I am struggling with the translation of the wiring to a relay spur off the headlights!!!

    Thanks for your help!!

  7. I am looking to get a bit more accurate info on the goings-on within my (carb 3.5...ish!) V8. I have a acquired space for gauges (Mud console) and was looking to put in oil pressure, oil temp and a new (accurate) water temp gauge.

Merlin do the VDO gauges, but I can't find the senders in 1/2" BSP which I think my senders are....

    Help!!!

    Any alternatives considered!!!

  8. Bearmach for me all the way:

I have one on - it was on before purchase, I have had it 6yrs and absolutely no probs at all. It has taken a bit of a hammering but is in v good nick.

I have a NATO hitch (mounted at top of x-member!!) and my spare is a 33", no interference, and it swings nicely out the way too (can't mount a Mantec due to fouling). I don't mind it being a bit more over the right as I mount a bike rack on my spare and it keeps it from sticking the bike into the hedge on the narrow lanes I go along to the usual mtb trail.

    Just my 2p worth...!

  9. I have some 35" KL71s, seemed like a good compromise for all-round use; always going to be down-sides to any compromise (eg "all-season" tyres for winter road use rather than winter's) but I am happy with them

I looked and tried after reading this:

KUMHO JOINT WINNER OF 4x4 MAGAZINE’S ULTIMATE MT TYRE TEST

    11 June 2008

The Kumho Road Venture MT KL71 was the joint winner of 4x4 Magazine’s ‘ultimate tyre test’ to establish the best mud-terrain tyre on the UK market. It shared top honours with a BFGoodrich, beating offerings from Goodyear, Wildcat, Maxxis, Cooper, INSA and Pirelli by a significant margin. All eight makes of 235/85 R16 tyres were subjected to six challenging, real-world tests, ie – mud climb, bog run, side slope, rock crawl, gravel and tarmac braking. One vehicle was involved – a 2007 Land Rover Defender 110.

The magazine found the Kumho KL71 radically different in appearance from all its competitors and, in fact, to be the best looking as well as the joint best performer. The Kumho was awarded top marks on the rock crawl and gravel braking tests and performed with credit on the mud climb and bog run. In summary, the magazine said, “The Kumho MT KL71 is a great tyre and a deserving all-round winner. Give it a try.”

Said Kumho’s Managing Director Steve Tidmarsh, “We are naturally delighted with the result. 4x4 Magazine’s test is very much in line with our own research and reinforces the confidence we have had in the KL71 from the outset. I can also reveal that the new 18in rally raid tyre we have developed for the Bowler Nemesis is based on the KL71 and that is surely the ultimate test for an MT tyre.”

  10. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    LPG it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mounts not same , even when change gearbox mounts (£19 a pair) you need to weld a new set of mounts on (available from Richards chassis at about a tenner each)

to do the r380 you need to change the diaphragm, and all the rest as above............................. BUT JUST DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JE bored and lined block to ~4.2

    Weber / Edelbrock 500cfm carb

    decked block to maintain 9.5:1

stage 3 head with MASSIVE valves

    218 new cam

    bleed-down lifters (rhoads)

steel rockers to allow higher revving

lightened and balanced con rods / crankshaft

  11. I had similar, and best solution I came up with was:

bore and line block to ~4.2

    Weber / Edelbrock 500cfm carb

    deck block to maintain 9.5:1

stage 3 head with MASSIVE valves

    218 new cam

    bleed-down lifters (rhoads)

steel rockers to allow higher revving

lightened and balanced con rods / crankshaft

    ..... sound a bit extreme???

i like the end result A LOT!! :D

  12. for 35s you'll need 2" lift (min)

for 12.5s you'll need minimum of 30mm spacers to maintain decent lock / prevent too much rubbing

i have had kumho (or marshall) KL71s, pretty good off road, reasonable in mud, quite civilised on-road

lots of choice including road-biased A/T all the way up to swampers

in fairness there is a lot on google too!!! ;)

  13. Hi

I have just done the first run with my ashcroft - recon'd LT85 / LT230, and (yes, early days!!) am absolutely delighted with it. As has been said before, reputations are hard to earn and easy to lose. Yes, everyone will know a situation where there was a problem, we are dealing with 60's technology, and there are sometimes things that go wrong, but the reassuring thing is the after-sales service you get from Ashcroft, I had a P38a that had a warranty rebuild of gearbox, worked fine for a while then "popgrindbang"! I was struggling for weeks without a vehicle as they(not ashcroft) argued the toss about a new recon box. I doubt this would happen with Ashcroft from what I hear.

Incidentally I have a LT77 (not an "s", but F suffix so not the problematic type) that came out to make way for the LT85 - it had apparently just been refurb'd when I bought the 90 2 years ago, so may buy you some time if you need to save up for an ashcroft recon (it comes complete with LT230 t/f box and both have never given a hint of a problem) - yours for not many notes if you want it?

Good luck, hope the decision you end up making is a good-un!

    VBW
