Hi all
I have a 2003 td4 and the rear brakes are sticking on when left over night, it sounds like it's the passenger side which is sticking on.
So in the morning the brakes brake off as if stuck on by been frozen and then driving off I can hear a scrapping noise ( rubbing, scrapping as if shoes are still on ) I haven't check if they getting hot.
I've checked through the history of the car and the rear brakes have not been done that I can see so am thinking going down the replace shoes ( both sides as that's what you do ) rather than doing the hand brake cables.
Any help or ideas would be great.
Cheers

sorted wiring on back of alternator at fault
-
new alternator fitted still got the same problem
so is it wiring on the back of the alternator (the old td wiring on disco alternator)
or wirirng on ignigtion because when ignition switched on the battery light goes out and oil light comes on as normal
but they both should come on together then go out when engine started correct.
-
So in need of a new diode cheers western

hi all ive had my alternator on my 90 (disco 200tdi engine) for about 4 months now(recon), last night the egine kept cutting out and re starting then nothing stopped, by passed the kill switch started, battery warning light came on no keys in then once engine running it went out, got the truck home removed the battery put it on charge removed kill switch all together, battery fully charged and re installed went to connect and the earth termminal sparking, removed earth cable removed wires off alternator connected battery then when putting alternator wires back on sparking again and smell of burning.
so is it a battery or alternator problem or is it a earth problem
any helpwould be great please cheers steve.

Ashcroft Transmissions have them.
You can leave the t/c connected to the g/b and chassis. You drop the bottom cover for access to the intermediate gears, take the hi/lo selector housing off the top to allow removal of the entire front housing complete with diff and hi/lo gears. It's a mission, I'm sure there's a post in the tech archive covering it.
I've always just dropped the whole t/c and done it on the bench... Then you can give it a full bearing and seal kit which are cheap enough.
Have fun!
Ray.
Cheers for that ray I think I'll just drop it out I think that will be common sense way then I can do a proper job of it

With an LT-77 in 5th through a 1.667 t/c and 3.54 diffs your donkey is doing a tad over 3000 rpm at 55 mph. If you drop in a 1.410 gear set (you don't have change the whole t/c) you'll drop the revs by about 400 rpm and a 1.22 gear set will drop about 600 rpm. The gearset can be changed with the transfer case still on the vehicle.
Ray.
hi ray where can i get the gear set from cause if it can be done in situ that would be great or will i still have to take the t/b out but use the same casing

Forgot to add. Before you fiddel with fuelling etc at all, give it a good service (all filters/oils), check the tappets and the timing. No point 'tuning' something that is not in a good state initially. Also consider how many miles the injectors have done and whether they may need a re-con.
have just done all filters and oil but will do the cam belt as its due and put a electric fan on at the same time and have just noticed my turbo pipe has a split so change that to first and go from there but will change the transfer box to just to help it along

Unfortunatley, our tech archive thread suffers since all the pics have dissapeared and the formatting has gone to pot making it quite difficult to read and understand properly!
These threads are probably better and clearer and contain some good links:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=44813&start=0
followed by this one:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=62459&hilit=performance
are probably the best - Vulcan Bomber on LRO spent a lot of time explaining tuning to me in them and its quite a good discussion. The second one contains a link to very good pdf (with pics) that explains the pump setup and how to alter it. I would say that you really need at least a boost guage and probably an EGT guage (i dont have the latter, but havent tweaked mine too much).
Next step for me is to get the head ported if/when it comes off, but its running really well at the mo, so no need currently.
cheers for that i will have a little read and give it ago, should boost gauge be in bar or psi and only want alittle tweak not a massive speed monster lol

This thread in the tech archive will help you get some more poke http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=31
The disco transfer box will increase top end speed assuming you currently have the defender one in ;-)
yeah still have the defender one in

hi all could some one please help in regards of tuning my disco engine plase, its in my 90 and would like to tune it just to give me alittle bit of power up the hills, ive tried finfing some info through the search but cant find any.
also would changing the transfer box to the dico one help with top end speed to
cheers all steve

Now, my next thing is this. There is a 1996 discovery fitted to the original lt77 gearbox and the transfer box is, I assume original too. Both seem to be in good order but it is very slow.(no more than 55mph). Does anyone know if i should fit a different transfer box, will it make a difference and if so which one would fit onto said gearbox without too much hassle?
would also like to know as havs same problem

i took mine off with a heat gun peeled off the sticker then with g3 and a mop on a machine puffer, polished both sides looked lovely when finnished

shims only under the top pin, don't remove to many as it'll make it to tight. check the preload afterwards too.
also any idea what to use to check the pre load (tool, or handy gaget to do it with it)
-
so would it be just the top swivel pinn shims to take out and re do the preload or top and bottom.
and will i need to buy some at this stage or just to the point of taking them out
-
hi all my 90 passsed her m.o.t which im very pleased about.
the tester mentioned that i will need to replace the shims in the n/s front wheel soon i take it there is some movement at 12 and 6, and i take it this means the drive flange on the front.
1 can i just change these or is it a complete hub re build.
2 what is the part number for said shims or is it a kit that i can buy
cheers steve
