  1. Thanks for the info.

Managed to open it this morning, but found that the whole engine is now a lovely brown colour after taking a mud run a little too fast last weekend!

Anybody know any good / cheap way of cleaning it?

There's a guy near Orpington who is charging £20 for a steam clean.

    Any better ideas people??

Why bother cleaning it? surely it will dirty again soon?

  2. For some reason my RRC bonnet won't open as it has done religiously so far.

The handle inside doesn't give like it should and the gap between the bonnet and the headlight surround has gone so it looks like the bonnet has closed too far.

Any ideas on how I can open it without breaking the bonnet cable or catch?

MOT is due next week so needs to be a quick fix!!!!

    Thanks in advance

    RRman

My last Rangey was a pig to get the bonnet open, the only way i could do it was to hit/push the bonnet on the side on the drivers side near the front (this will push open the bonnet latch a bit more) and hey presto it always opened.

In the end i perfected it and could do it by myself! swift bang in the right place as i pulled the bonnet latch cable it would pop up!

I have seen this happen a few times when the latch is very dirty.

Failing that you can prise the grill off and get straight on the latch with some levers but it can be a pig to release.

  3. My Rangey's engine a 200tdi has a real bad vibration issue at tick over, especially when cold, it shakes the whole vehicle. would be too bad but its rattling my fillings out!

Once the revs get above 8-900 RPM she's fine and pulls like a train throughout the rev range.

It uses no oil, dont smoke, theres no knocking noise that would indicate big ends etc, so i'm kinda at a loss of what it might be?

    Any suggestions?

  4. He does it on purpose! no grease + Mud = broken down 90! and then he gets to drive a real motor, A Rangey!!

My one to be precise, he wont admit it but he envies the warmth of the heater and the electric windows of my Rangey. Mind you he still opens the drivers window to poke his elbow out of when tackling a mini roundabout!!!!

    :lol::lol::lol:

I thought his name was Dave?

  5. Stripping V8 for a new camshaft as it was running like a bag of spanners and this is what I found! On lobes/lifters for cylinders 5 and 7.

I've seen wear before but this is impressive! Could people let me know how this could happen so bad on just two? The others have dished a little but nothing like this!

Worried that if I put in new cam and lifters same will happen?

    Any ideas?

The dished lifters are shorter than the rest because they have not been lifted up and have scored the cam (see pics) and begun to wear the lifter base away!

Thats a familiar site! i rebuilt a V8 in a series 1 that ran fine but popped back through the carbs when you floored it, turned out the last two cam profiles were near on perfectly round!!!

    Love em!

  6. OK, so when i changed the gearbox i my Rangey i knew the rear crank seal was leaking so i popped a new one (Britpart) in place, all seemed fine for a few hundred miles but now its peeeing out!!!!:angry:

So i guess it back to the workshop and out with the motor! it's a different one as i usually pull gearboxes out!

sometimes i wonder what it is thats so great about Land Rovers?!?!?

  7. In the process of fitting a 200tdi into 1983 Rangy, I have read that the input shaft lenght on the long lever lt77 is different, donor is 1993 Disco,

    Any clues. :(

where did the long lever box come from? i thought they only fitted on defenders?

My best advice would be to ask Ashcroft tensmissions, very helpful.

  8. Intresting project you got there matey, should make for a crackin vehicle?

Me and mate built a 110 tipper a few years back using a nissan 3.3 6 pot 5 speed patrol box coupled up to Rangey Axles, with a mixture of S111 and defencder truck cab and front end finished off with a transit tipper body on the back end  . Called "Bitsa" for obvious reasons. The truck was brilliant but we decided afterwards it would have been easier to put the defender truck cab onto the Nissan chassis! but hey ho.

Keep the pictures coming, will watch with intrest.

  9. And you had the cheek to question my "elegant" solution! :o

    All done ;)

Even put the dash board back in! Lovely. Only problem was the Britpart heater matrix needed a bit af tweeking to get the pipes in the right place.

mmmm Warm non stinky air good!

  10. You notice Baz does not actually say he has put the dash back in.

If he left half out on the last job then I'm betting the other half has joined the pile somewhere.

    Damn, i've been sussed!

I like to call it pre planning!:lol:

  11. PAH!!! you lot were scaring me!

whipped the heater out in 40 minutes! matrix was out on the bench in another 10 :P..................

Guess it did help that i hadn't put half the dash back in after the recent gearbox and master cylinder change!!:lol:

Comfirmed my theory, the matrix was knackered! new one for £40 :) what a bargain :D .

  12. What he said^

Its the reason for many a sale of Radweld and the like, it might work, it might not, but usually a temporary fix anyway.

My elegant solution was to hit the dash with an angle grinder:

Like the idea  , but i think im gonna go for the screwdrivers and spanners affair!

  13. Might have sussed it...one bulb missing, one blown.

Plunger was stuck in = rev lights would have been permanently on!

Last owner must have removed the good bulb!

    Doh!

Teach me to check basics first. Had to take gearbox cover off anyhow to fix the lack of reverse gate resistance...

Thanks for all the pointers....

Bulbs!!! why didn't i think of that!!!:lol::lol:
