Since wrting this I have rang L.E.G.S (Land Rover Engine and Gearbox Specialists) whom say that it is likely to be the front differental. They explained to me that it is not likely to be the gearbox as if there was a problem with 5th it would likely to just give up and not vibrate in the mean time. The bit I find hard to understand is how can this be a front differential problem when the vibration is not apparent when travelling the same speed in 4th i.e. same diff, transfer, CV revolutions etc.
Any comments on front diff vibrations please and or 5th Gear problems
Thanks in advance Richard
Check the prop shaft UJs for wear. Diff wear is normally a deep rumble or whine. It should be easy to check if you just crawl under and grab a hold!!

Problems with engine today. Its a 1991 Defender 90 with a 200Tdi engine.
Had to go up to Aberdeen and filled up with diesel in Dundee (Jet). After about 40 minutes or so travelling at about 60mph the engine started to, I can only think of it like stuttering. I dropped speed and it seemed fine but as I picked up again it went back to faltering. Got to Aberdeen, loaded up kit and then headed back. Fine for first 40 minutes or so and then it started again. We stopped for a break at Forfar and yet again OK for a while then kicked back in. Mind you it never stopped even if it did falter quite badly once or twice.
I kept very close eye on temperature gauge and it never budged off its normal position. I also checked the fuel return unions at the injectors in case air was being sucked in but they were tight and completely dry.
I wondered if I had picked up a cr*p batch of fuel? But I also wondered if it was engine getting hot but perhaps not showing on gauge? I checked coolant before we left and again just now but levels are still OK. Also looked inside oil filler cap and nothing creamy so think it isn't a cylinder head thing.
Has anyone come across this sort of thing before? If so what do you think it is? Should I pop some diesel treatment in to try and clean through the injectors?
Any help greatly appreciated. Having just rechassied the thing I don't want the engine to go!!!!
Best wishes
Malcy
Put a new fuel filter on it. Cheap diesel especially supermarket stuff has lots of water in it.
Could simply be coincidence, but sounds blocked to me. With a diesel if it runs and does not smoke it's most likely fuel.

HMMM!!!! yesterday i went through Dartford tunnel and it cost £1.80 ( van), 3 hours later came back over the bridge, gave the woman £1.80, OI!! she cried as i waited to race away, 'ere you r and she gave me back 80p, and as I drove away the red led writing on the side of the barrier said thankyou INVALID £1.00. I nearly stopped and demanded she take the 80p back again!!
I digress now I've been having lucious wanten thoughts (slap.slap) oh! so I looked up SANTANA PS10, well apparently "unlike land rover these are classed as LCV so you can reclaim ALL of your vat. "now I dont pay vat (YET!) but why is this. Buy the one I'd have is the military version, with winch, axle diff lox, matt green paint!!
Hi
Went over the Severn Bridge to Wales the other day.Got ready to argue my 90 hardtop was NOT a van and the guy in the booth said no problem, all landies get charged as a car.

If you don't turn up the fuel, it will run lean and your combustion temp will increase and you will melt a piston. If you get the mixture right then the combustion temp will be higher than N/A, and you will melt a piston. If you overfuel this will also increase combustion temperatures and you will melt a piston. If you change the pistons to ones from a turbo then you can run boost up to maybe 6 or 7 psi and fuel to match, fit an intercooler too and who knows. Its a lot of work but if you have the bits what is there to loose? Good Luck!
