mine is similar as it has not got the plastic lights surrounds like most but i have a normal defender grill. I have got the plastic light surrounds to fit but i prefer it with out as it looks a little differnt.
I agree, I think less platic suits the landrover look. I'll do that with mine, probably leave the grill, would be a good compromise.

What age is your vehicle. Others will know for sure, but i think pre-300tdi had the bush, after that they had a bearing at the top. Have the swivels got drain plugs - if so, i always thought that these were meant to use EP90.
Mines a 300tdi. It's 1996.
Truthfully if its ok with the one shot, I'll probably try that and see how it goes. Before tackling the rusty bolts..
cheers

So, not, overly complex
Has anyone done this?

I was watching Wheeler Dealers, they bought and sold a Stage 1 V8;
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_305357-Land-Rover-V8-Stage-1-1981.html
I really like the front, much less plasticy than the Defender. Wondered how hard it would be to give a Defender the Stage 1 look.
Although it would feel a bit wrong to make it none original, neither one thing nor the other...

No problem.
Grease wont stop water getting in and it only 'solves' the leak as it is more viscous when cold. The other issue is that if you have a Railko bush at the top of the swivel, it isnt meant for grease as i dont think it splash lubricates as well as EP90. It also doesnt drain easily if you ever do want to change it because of contamination.
Thanks, a lot to think about there. I'll look into the bush.
I had wondered if this is a good opportunity to strip it down, change swivel and hub seals, change bearings. Maybe over the top, but is it worth changing as much as possible while its apart?

Go to the tech archive index:
http://forums.lr4x4....?showtopic=4731 (second link down on the normal tech archive page). Les's section is about 2/3 of the way down that page.
Having said what i did in the posts above, i did this the other day and used the method that Ralph described - 7(?) bolts, pull the whole hub and halfshaft, rest it in the upturned wheel and remove the old seal and fit the replacement. (it was heavy though!)
Thanks Reb, and for the navigation help. I am thinking I liked the method you used, several bolts doesn't sound too bad. I'll happily exchange hassle for weightlifting!
Although, I am tempted to try first, the "one shot ?" grease insead of oil, I hadn't realised grease was commonly used, that would be the easier fix!

the swivel ball complete with hub/disc/swivel housing/CV & shaft can be removed to change the swivel seal, that's how I did mine, the assembly is piggin' heavy when spliting it from the axle & when aligning it for refit.
There is a cheat in the tech archive - it involves cutting the seal and leaving the cut at the top with a bit of hylomar. Its one of the links under Les' section IIRC
Mines starting to leak, so might as well fix it while the weathers good..
I'm struggling to find the article in the technical archive, how do you find Les' section?
Although filling it with grease could be an option.
thanks

I've bought two sets of these (scroll down a bit): http://www.mailorder...terior_628.html
I looked at these, they have a foam bottom, downside of these with a Defender with all their leaks is that it'll hold dampness.
-
Oh retro I don't deal well with multiple options!
They look ok on Lars link and very cheap, do they fit well?
Cheers both

Sorry if this has been covered already...
Does anyone have a good recomendation for some fitted rubber mats?
The Landrover ones being £70 and some other now Landrover ones about £50, just seems expensive. The ones I have are a bit worn, but have a foam underside, so keep the floor nice and damp!
cheers

ahhh one of those posh ones with a radio fitted from day one, i had an extra area for the air con instead.
I got it working, I was happy for a while, until I realised what rubbish is on the radio in a morning, and turned it off...

In which case take a few blankets for mum to wrap up warm, in case you do get stuck in a massive tailback and have to turn engine off. With all the tea and water people are recommending your biggest problem will be finding a toilet when you need it
I keep an old blanket in mine, can also be used to kneel on etc as needed.
A tow rope hasn't been mentioned! Handy to have, may need to tow someone out of your way, of course

I hate English weather; while other countries get the interesting extremes of hot long summers and feet of snow at winter, we get year round drearyness, only that its a bit colder in winter and less cold in summer...
-
hmmm, mine does this too and it was a newly re con box. its done 8k and its still doing it. I've got some MTF94 for it, just need to get around to changeing the oil. - I've heard these boxes can be very selective of what oil you put in them.
Fingers crossed we both just have oil issues, god only knows when they've last been changed..
-
Thats why I don't live in Australia!
-
Thanks, its due a service, I'll get the oil changed and see how it does.

I've got a Defender 300tdi, R380 gearbox.
For the most part its fine. But if you change from 2nd to 3rd too fast it feels like it bites a bit, I don't know the technical term. It doesn't crunch, but I feel I need to push it in more slowly for a smooth change.
The gearbox does otherwise seem totally fine, just worried this is a sign the synchromesh is slowly giving up?
cheers

i would strongly advise you push the radio into position before rebuilding the dash, the earth lead on my jvc unit was about 2 inches short to allow the fuse box mount to be used. pity i had just reassembled the dash. By the way the passenger grab handle is a sod to get back in
I don't think I'll need to take the dash apart. I've took the radio out, by first unscrewing the caddy thing it sits in. So, hopefully just feed a wire up from the fuse box.
-
How about this for a camper, would worry everyone on the campsite seeing this turn up
-
Always good to get advice on here, rather than spending a couple of hours discovering another awkwardness of the vehicle!
-
Thanks, I'll try one of those methods, maybe the fuse box first if I can easily get a wite that way.
thanks!
-
Had my Defender a year and just getting round to sorting the radio. Previous owner seems to have ripped out the speakers, but also the earth isn't there, wheres the best place to connect a new wire to? Where do you feed it through the dash and which bit of chasis will be best?
cheers

I think the guy off that program 'Will it Snow' is James Madden of exactaweather.com He's been in the news a lot recently regarding his winter forecast - cold like last December but more prolonged. He even says he wouldn't be surprised if records are broken!
Of course a lot of other forecasters are saying it'll be a mild one so I guess we'll see... But... It appears Mr Madden could be correct as his summer forecast was pretty accurate and he did predict the snow in October, which is actually quite impressive when you take into account NI haven't had snow before bonfire night for many, many years.
Also there are the 'old wives tales' such as; the more berries/fruit on trees, the more severe the winter will be - if this is true then looking at the small tree at the bottom of my garden it's going to be a cold one. The branches are almost vertical because of the weight! I have also heard that the later the trees lose their leaves, the colder it will be. And then there is the saying mild November means a cold December...
I've got a lot of stick at work for my new found interest in the weather, but hopefully someone here will read this and actually find it as interesting as I have!
It's funny, since I got myself the Land Rover, the winter's have suddenly got quite a bit harsher and for some (sick?) reason I hope this will continue!
I'm the same, I've taken a greater interest in the weather. But all I seem to find out is you can't forecast far into the future
Still, fingers crossed for at least a few snowy days.

Totally agree. Quite a few of them here in Brisbane but the roads are bigger and the car park spaces are bigger generally here. Would find it a bit difficult to drive around the uk.
Ali
I spent a bit of time in the US, where there's loads of these, they are massive things, it'd be like having a lwb transit, the stress of trying to park it would be enough for me
A lucky escape!!

That's bad!
And an open top car for summer...
