  1. Hi,

just bought myself a defender which is a bit of a project... one of the things I need to do is get the drivers door to line up, I’ve replaced the hinges but it looks like the bulkhead angle is out on one side, how do I add spacers to align it with stripping the bare minimum? I take it if I undo the bolt the bulkhead will drop or move?

    Thanks!

  2. Not sure if this is in the right place..

Stolen off Naylor Street which is just off vauxhall road, just outside my student halls. Last time i definitely saw it was on monday night at 11, cant remember seeing it yesterday, but didnt notice anything unusual like i did this morning.

There was no smashed glass around and it was alarmed and immobilised.

If anyone in the area could keep the eye out it would be great

    Thanks

    Tom

  3. Hi,

A few weeks ago replaced the cv joints on my defender, whilst i had the front stripped down i decided to replace the front diff pan as it looked as if it was going to go bad soon ( the rear one already has) so i removed the diff, after rebuilding the front axle i had quite a bad leak from the diff, thought this might be due to poor welding however i also had a whine coming from the front after rebuilding, i thought this could have been the prop as i could feel play in it.

Ive just replaced the prop and can still feel the play so it must be the pinion bearing causing the up and down movement, this would also explain the leak of oil as it does look like it might be running from the pinion seal.

Is it possible to replacing the bearing with the diff still in place? I dont have the time at the minute to strip it back down due to uni! Ive spoke to the garage i normally take it too on the phone and he reckons that these parts dont wear out and it would need a new diff... he quoted £220 for a 2nd hand diff and £175 to fit it, is this true? and are his prices expensive?

Ive tried searching the forum but cant find many posts on this!

    Thanks!

    Tom

  4. All sounds very helpful, thanks!

ill look into the insurance for just fire and theft, i forgot about insurance for if it was stolen!

I did speak to my dad about insuring it for a a very low milage per year so he drive it around a bit, trouble is he is a civil engineer, so drives for usually an hour or 2 at least a day so its too unreliable for him!

I also looked at seeing if i could get insurance, short term for like a week for when im home so i could still drive it but being 18 thats proving quite hard.

would you recommend getting a cover? would it help?

    Thank you!

  5. Hi everyone,

So im off to uni tomorrow so my car is going to be parked on the drive for about a year as it probably wont be insured.

Going to get my dad to start it quite often but is there anything else you recommend me doing to it before i leave as it will be sat for so long?

Was also thinking of getting a cover for it, to protect it through those cold winter months!

    Thanks!

  6. Been out today with the gutter sealant trying to reduce the leaks after seeing it was all still coming in but surprisingly not through the big hole! Think most of its coming through the seal between the window mount and the bulkhead, didn't realise there was a seal there as it had been painted over! Also had the hammerite out on the rust to try and stop it spreading.

Sounds like this rattlematt is worth getting then, ill add it to the list!

  7. just soundproofed mine with rattlemat, id say its 2 - 3 mm thick and the dash still fits great, looking at it, it could probably have been thicker, just make sure to leave the areas where the dash bolts/screws up flush to the bulkhead and you will be ok.

Bit out my price range that! Although looking at it in different sizes its much more reasonable so I'm guessing thats just an error.

Did it make much of a difference? And is that how much you needed to do it all?

  8. Well the whole dash is already stripped, and looking very dirty behind there... Whilst its all off I thought it might be a good idea to sound proof behind the dash as its much louder with no dash! ( I suppose the hole isn't really helping!) has anyone done this? I problem I can see of it needs to be very thin so the dash still fits properly.

Going to attempt to weld on Monday now I think

  9. Well the rest of its in pretty good condition! Been resprayed at some point and the chassis and cross members are all good. It is a land rover specialist but i know a garage would charge a fortune and i know its a major job but how hard is it actually to do myself?

Trouble is that in september i will hopefully be going to uni so its not going to be driven very much until I'm back home so doesn't seem much point in replacing it now.

I was thinking instead of paying someone to weld it i may try "bodging" it for now (I know a lot of you wont be pleased!) and try plating it myself and then if i don't get in to uni or after it i'll then think about replacing it.

  10. This is a photo from under the bonnet next to the heater box, can't really see it here though

and then this is just the outside

    IMG_2070.jpg

There is a crack running just under the gutter piece, it could do with the repair sections on these, how much would a garage charge for that?

Ive just been quoted £150 to patch the hole, does this sound reasonable? Sorry, its the first time ill have had welding done on it!

Ive also tightened the top bolt of the fake hinge as there was a gap behind it and sealed it, hope fully this will also reduce the leaks

    Thanks

  11. So with all this rain i thought it would be a good time to look for the water leak that seems to be puddling in the passenger footwell.

i removed the lower part of the dash where the wiper motor is to find this..

    Wish i hadn't now!

You can see it goes through to under the bonnet.. also looks like the previous owner has tried to repair it

Whats the best way of repairing this? Im i best getting a welder out to patch this?

    Thanks

  12. Hi, this may be stupid question.. but I'm still learning! :D

I have just fitted a boost gauge to my 300tdi, in 5th it seems to be boosting around 1.1 bar..

    Sorry about the blurry photo

    IMG_2006.jpg

Ive read that a 300tdi should only be boosting at 0.85 bar, is this something i should be worried about? If the T piece I've used is restricting the waste gate pipe would this cause it to over boost?

    Thanks!

  13. Hi, just gone to change my old indicator light units on the rear of my 94 300tdi but for some reason one side is the earlier type... i already have the light unit of the new style but was just wondering if some one new what the plug is i need to wire in and how hard is it?
