  1. Or possibly even 'Which Land/Range Rover'!

I bought a winch bumper, blind, as you do! On the strength that it was advertised as a Discovery winch bumper and it may fit mine. It doesn't, so I need to identify it properly and then either move it on or, modify it to suit my needs!

It appears that it may well be a OEM 'hidden bumper' for a Disco 3, but maybe 4. So, can anyone confirm it for me?

  2. I've been using my tatty but deeply loved 200 tdi for off roading and am now beginning to look at doing punch hunts and maybe a winch challenge or two...onceI get the winch bolted on!

So then...are the 24 spline shafts and diffs really appreciably stronger? If so, how much hassle is involved in swapping my 200 Tdi Disco items out for 24 spline? I am toying with the idea of diff lockers, but some makes aren't available for 10 spline, or are £100 more for the same thing! I then get into the thoughts of whether it's worth buying an Ashcroft built/recon'd diff with locker fitted as part of the build up. Thoughts please. At the moment I'm only playing, it is rapidly getting more expensive/serious/ absorbing!

The other option is to use somebody like Ashcroft for a tailored set up...but that looks REALLY expensive. Still undecided on air lockers or Detroit too so opinions on that won't be unappreciated either.

  3. Hi guys,

Had the 200 out at the weekend when I got stuck in the middle of a fairly deep, muddy, wet hole. Net result, a carpet full of mud the consistency of oil!

Something didn't like its soaking. Basically it initially manifested itself as a 'sticking' starter solenoid, a few key turns and she'd suddenly fire in to life.

Today, she won't start, similar sort of symptoms but she started easily enough off a bump. However, now I've lost the electric windows, radio, interior light and clock. Exterior lights, wipers and indicators/horn etc still work.

    Fuses all appear ok........suggestions?

  4. After quite a bit of reading and research about the problems that the TD5 seems to suffer from, mainly involving the engine and air suspension...

...as well as the advantages of the TD5, better ride and build quality allegedly, as well as being more refined.

I am wondering if there is any mileage in finding a decent D2 with a blown engine, and dropping a 300 tdi into it?

Pluses/minuses, pitfalls etc, all comments appreciated!

  5. It has warranty of sorts. If nothing else you can return it as 'not fit for purpose' within a limited timescale.

The dealer is liable for faults with the vehicle - that mean it was not of satisfactory quality - that were present at the time it was sold even though they may only become apparent later on.

  6. Are there any modifications to make the Discovery tow bar any less plough like in its ability to dig in and scoop up huge amounts of soil and stone?

I am toying with the idea of taking an angle grinder to it in order to remove all excess, and then welding a plate between the end plate and side arms. The thinking being that WHEN it comes into contact with something solid again, it may act more like a skid than an anchor and hopefully wont fill up with 20 kilos of wet clay and flint again!

I don't really want to do away with the tow bar as I do use it, but if the only answer is to take it off every time I want to play...then I need to work out a quick fit (de)mounting system.

    Thoughts?

  7. Have a look at the bama events

These are aimed at std. Motors and hark back to the old days of teamwork and navigation style events.

Almost no need for winches but plenty of grey matter needed ,well the ability to use it helps

    Google mudmaster for an idea

As I read it, these events are only open to serving members? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  8. I've got mud tyres already fitted, I've fitted a pin tow bar, jate rings, a bridle and have a recovery strop inbound...I will get around to diff covers, but not yet, because I need to save my money for diesel and fees for this weekends fun and games!

Pay and play session No.2 on Sunday! :D

Then I can assess again. I've also discovered how easy it is to persuade others to have a go! I put up a little vid of my trundle around a couple of weeks ago (the firebreather did a 30 minute running commentary which I condensed to 5 minutes of her squeaking! ) Off the back of it one guy has bought some muds and is planning to join me on Sunday, and another friend who used to do quite a bit apparently has decided to buy another 4x4. He only stopped as his mate moved away and he had nobody to go out with!

  9. Keep an eye open for details the Mike Wolfe trophy that our treasurer (Hybrid_from_Hell) has an involvement in. There is a thread about it on here . He has plans to make it accessible to all levels of truck and driver.

Having just seen your location this may be a bit far for your, I believe it is being held in Sussex somewhere.

That could be of interest once I get a bit of experience. :i-m_so_happy:

  10. Well, this thread has made me grin a bit! :D

It doesn't matter what the forum is there are always the experts, then those who think they are experts and then those who are well read but lacking reall experience and oh so often it's a case of working out who actually knows what they are talking about, and who the Walts are!

Great to see this forum is no different to my biking, fishing or shooting forums!

Thanks to all for your input, and I think I've sorted the wheat from the chaff :) , now to go and find the best place to browse and buy.

  11. They won't allow kinetic ropes on the two local pay and play sites.

If you have spare recovery gear that you'd like to sell on, please do PM me, I'd be very interested and quite willing to buy them from you. I'd really rather not pay twice...or three times for inadequate or inferior kit.

Any links to a decent bridle would also be appreciated. I don't really know the right places to be looking.
