  1. Hi,

I have had 2 diffs break through offroading but they were weak. I could tell that mine were on there way out because of the play inside them. When selecting gear from stationary it would knock into gear. This was the diffs slowing giving up. In the end the pin through the planet wheels broke leaving the planet wheels floating around until they were blown to pieces. Your problem sounds more like a cv, now I am no expert (far from one) but if it is a clicking noise then usually it is a cv. However as I am no expert I cannot help you with why it jumps out of gear via the transfer box. Mine has done it before but sometimes it is because it is not completely in gear.

    Thanks for your replies,

I checked for a clicking but there is none evident that I can tell, it dosnt actually jump out of gear its just feels like it has! I'll check the diff for debris as MO suggests.

  2. Hi people and a Happy New Year to all.

I have a very intermitant noise coming from the front end of my 90, its as if its jumping out of hi/low range with a LOUD crash this has happend 4 times now in a week!

It has also started to make a rumbling noise, like a bearing gone? which sound as if its the front o/s, mind you it could be anywhere I suppose!

I replaced the steering arm balljoints as the o/s appeared worn, all wheels props etc were checked for tightness at that time and they seem ok, I know the front diff has a fair amount of play in it. :(

The noise has happend on righthand, lefthand and straight ahead positions, the first time last Sat when we were going greenlaning around Wiltshire, while pulling into the carpark before setting off a crunch then it was fine all day? 2 days later I went to a local river crossing to clean off a bit of the muck and it happend again, this time I checked to see if my front prop was there as I thought i'd lost it!! once back on the road thats when the rumbling started. Now its a permenant rumble.

Could it be the diff or maybe the CV? or can anyone think of something else to look at OR should I just wait until something actually breaks as I feel I might end up changing stuff just to see if it cures the problem. :(

    Cheers

    C

  3. Mine doesn't get hot either. After all it's only an expansion tank, not part of the main circuit I guess.

You should be able to 'see' the thermostat opening if you keep a close eye on the temp gauge.

On mine the temp goes up to just over half in the first few miles, and then drops down to exactly 1/2 way as the 'stat opens.

Is the top hose from the thermostat hot after a run?

Yep both the top and bottom get hot

  4. Firstly thanks for all the ideas to solve this.

I changed over the sender from my old engine this afternoon, and hey presto the temp needle now sits bang in the middle of the range! I tested by going for a 8-10 mile run albeit on dual carrigeways and it stayed the same, I have done away with the viscous unit and have two lecky one in place.

The expanion chamber is still not getting any hot water to it!

Is this to be worried about do you think??

  5. Use the correct Defender temp sender with your existing gauge, otherwise you'll never get a decent reasonablt true reading from the gauge, if you do a search for 200tdi temp sender or similar, you should find lots of good info :D

I'll see if my old defender one will fit!

If there's no coolant circulation it'll either be a massive air lock [not usually a problem with 200Tdi's] or the water pump isn't running, could be a sheared impellor drive inside the pump or you have refitted the water pump/alternator drive belt haven't you ????

Well I suppose i could check again for an air lock, I drove the disco home for over 80 miles and it was fine temp wise so unless in the 5 months before i got around to fitting the engine something went bang then hopefully its not sheared.

Yes, the drive belts all all there!

  6. Apologies if this has been asked before!

I have just replaced my 90 200tdi engine with a disco 200tdi due to catostophic failure, everything wnt fine but i have 2 problems,

Water is not circulating the system seems not to pressurise, have tried another expansion cap still the same!

    The expansion tank stays cold!

The temp guage goes up to the red after some time.

I have kept the disco sender and the defender 200tdi guage, could this be a issue between the 2 units?

I am fairly confident that there is no air block.

I have done away with the viscous unit and am in the process of installing 2 eclectric fans from the discovery.

Any pointers to the cause/solution would be much appreciated, I dont want another dead engine on my hands!

    Cheers......
