  1. Can you confirm what model year your car is and I'll check the wiring diagram - there was a slight change on early ones. Just had a look, and if you have a white and black wire on the back of your ignition switch, it will be the early loom, and this white/black wire goes directly to the solenoid and is not connected to anything else - so you can disconnect both ends, cut the ends off and run a new wire from switch to solenoid. If there are only white wires on the back of the switch, then it is the later loom and you will need to do something slightly different - let me know what wires you see though first.
Gota go off on holiday now....Managed to get a sheath over as much of the wire as i could and got the landy running....

Will have to take a fire extinguisher with me...!!

Starts and runs fine with no smoke or burning, but the wires still live!!

Will have to get into it in a weeks time,But will report in via iphone if anything exciting happens...

Once again thanks for your help...

  2. Driving me mad....

Have put a new wire straight from the back off ignition to stop solenoid which is 12v live....

But this only works the ignition when a wire coming from the loom on the engine block is also connected to it....Then all is well.....and she starts....

But the bare burnt wire that was connected to the ignition that disapears into the loom is still live which is worrying and i cannot workout how to un live it...??

    Hope im making sence again....

  3. Hi...had a small fire behind my dash in a 2.5td with a 200tdi now in it....

Was my fault having added a small switch to manually stop the solenoid working,Managed to bridge the connections on the switch and shorted the wire thus its burnt all the way to the loom....

Can anyone tell me where the wire goes from the ignition to under the bonnet....

then goes to its live feed so i can disconnect it and make a new feed...as im worried about bare wires in the loom etc.....

many thanks if that makes any sence(the wire burnt is the small black and white one)

  4. HELLO ALL.

The power steering box in my 110 has started to leak which has a six bolt and i was wondering if the four bolt in the discovery 1 im just about to break will fit .

I have limited workspace and no garage to do any fabricating so am hopeing it,ll all just bolt in and screww together.....

the box will come from a k reg tdi discovery and go into a defender 110 e reg which used to be a td but is now a tdi...

    many thanks stu..

  5. Thanks for the replys.....all done..got the slave off but the pipe nut had welded itself in and was a complete pig too get undone.....had the grinder at it heat and all sorts.....

went too my local land rover garage to get a new pipe to go with the new slave and took the old one,,,and the nice man got it in his vise and magiced it apart???

He saved my life and did it for free as he didnt have a new pipe in stock and i need the landy.....

Anyway a big thumbs up for Gemm 4x4 in Larbert,Stirlingshire....

  6. HI.....my clutch slave sprung a leak today and i was halfway through taking it off today when the snow set in.......I have a Defender td e reg with a 200tdi discovery engine fitted.....

i was wondering if i cant get a slave tomorrow due too weather could i nick the one off my old discovery 200tdi too get me bye..............Also i was struggling to get the pipe nut undone with a 13mm is it actually meant too be a 1/2 in to be used????

    many thanks from snowy stirling....

  7. One that i use which i found once by accident when my truck wouldnt start is the spade wire on the fuel pump.........not sure exactly what it does but iff you lift the bonnet and pull the wire off before you go anywhere the truck simply wont start without it on????and would stump most people.....maybe you could take another piece off wire pushed into the bulkhead with a spade on it and use it as a dummy one when the other one is off.........

  8. My disco has developed a strange vibration under load.....It's not a major one, but a slight droning kind of vibration that would appear to eminate from the n/s front wheel area, however, when you back the power off it disappears.

It also becomes constant at about 55-60 mph. I'm 99% sure it's not a wheel bearing, as they usually drone constantly, and don't stop when the go pedal is released, so i'm thinking (along with a trawl through various other posts) prop uj on the front axle.

Any other pointers to watch out for? I shall be investigating the prop tomorrow morning, and if need be will strip and inspect the n/s wheel bearing (and hopefully sort the ABS problem at the same time)

    Cheers all

had this before.....when its not he usual culprits i.e. prop... wheel bearings ....etc etc.....try getting your wheels rebalanced.......as loosing a few off them little weights on the wheels can cause that vib.....
  9. My 88" has a TDi less intercooler set up. On the original 4-speed gearbox and transfer box. Originally I had series diffs. I now have Rangy diffs. The rangy diffs are of a lower ratio than the series which means the engine has to exert that little bit more torque to get things going than it did with the Series diffs, which is why she used to take off like the proverbial but is now slightly slower to take off.

However, i can say that in nearly 2 years of using her, Ive never had a problem with my transmission. Ive never broke a halfshaft, I never chewed a tranny box, and my 4-speed is no worse than it was with the 19J in before.

I love my 88, she runs so well, the TDi was the best thing i ever did to her, and confirmed my choice of engine for the 109. I fail to see why anyone would want to remove the turbo and all the good it does for little Series, i really do. I went and read the Glencoyne post again after it was posted. I looked at it and compared the amount of work I done....on 4 different motors now....and said no, sod it, thats too much effort for too little return - you might as well fit the sweet running 2286 petrol he refers too.

Ive discovered now, that a 90 2.5TD exhaust system without the centre silencer fits the 88 very nicely, with little modification. I've also discovered just how easily the 300TDi exhaust manifold and turbo fit the 200 disco engine (couldnt vouce for a defender) and how much of a doddle it makes fitting the exhaust and air intake, compared to all the faffing about I had to do. Glencoynes reference to struggling to fir a disco rad, oiler cooler whatever I've not looked for a few days, is baseless. Been there, done it, its easy. You do not need to fit the disco rad. Ive been running happily with my standard series rad since the day i fitted it, and she's done a lot of very hard work towing, off-roading, and working on a farm. My oil cooler is from a vauxhall calibras auto gearbox, with hoses made specially, and it sits quite happily in front of my rad.

I'll be fitting my intercooler in the spring, its going on the 'wrong' side, above the steering relay, that will up my torque and acceleration apparently...that should test my gearbox.

BTW, the wifes a bit of a 'girl racer'...and she hasnt killed the box yet.

To be honest, has anyone ever heard of, or killed a Series Gearbox with a TDi engine, and crucially, not been abusing it to do so? I'm interested, Ive never acctually met anyone who has and I'd like to.

looks like its gona be the tdi then.......anyone live near stirling fancy giving me a helping hand.....
  10. Stuff it im buying a land cruiser  ..No really i gets your drift the tdi would make it brilliant to use...and with carefull use of the right foot the gearbox etc will last a long time as i know a few people whove got them in their series and do countless miles abroad and never a problem......

Then again with a 2.5na driveing it from southampton to scotlands gona be a chore....but once their it would hopefully be not to bad potering aroond...

  11. I have a 300tdi inlet and turbocharger in the garage if your interested.

They were heading ebaywards but i've not got round to it yet...

dunno what to do now......feel like selling and buying a disco engine....but then a german friend threw a spanner in the works and says his 109 just fitted with a 2.5na is goodo...

  12. HI...I earlier this year aquired a 200tdi defender engine with turbo and manifolds plus various other bits missing...with the view to sourceing the parts and putting it into my series 3 109......after spending lots of time on ebay looking for defender tdi engine bits cheap,,or finding them at all im nearing the point off giveing up and looking for a complete disco tdi....

Then i thought is their anyway i can use the turbo from a disco 200tdi and manifold ?????

is this doable??? also the pulleys and alternater brackets are they the same????

  13. Just fitted a set of Rocky Mountain parrots to the 109 1 tonne chassis. As yet it hasn't moved on it's own power so I can't tell you how they ride yet  Two leaf fronts and 3 leaf rears.

Price wise they are more than Bearmach and deffo more than the P'docks offering but reasonable none the less.

Previously had TI Console/Heytsee for 9 years on the SWB S3 and never had any problems with them.

    Are Ti console still trading???

  14. I run a Defender 200TDi airbox & filter on my 4.6 and it seems to work well enough - and a new paper element is £10.

think i just asumed that if i put a easier flowing air filter on the engine would work a little better..just looking for ways to make the engine a little happier....im well aware it,ll never be quick just fancied treating the old girl...

  15. It won't filter anything out and it's not going to improve the standing 1/4 mile times of the 2.25 lump. Stick with the oil bath or stick a later paper element air box on, at least they stop things going in, and a 200TDi filter is by definition designed to flow at least twice as much air as your engine can suck in.

thats answered that then....i wont be putting one on.... :)
  16. Mine is the very same- leave it for ten minutes and it could be churning for 30 seconds before it kicks.

if the block was at 5 degrees it would start without choke, only needing choke to get it to idle.

It was suggested that it could be caused by low compression due to bore wear.

Its odd, though. I wonder if there is sufficient petrol in the float?

    G.

not sure about bore wear as shes only got 30,000 miles on the clock....petrol in the float sounds interesting

  17. If you can get a cheap 200tdi defender engine like i have its easy...just locating the parts i need to complete the engine is hard......on a different note all you have to do with the discovery engine with turbo into the 109 is rotate the turbo so that it points upwards just some drilling and tapping involved i beleive....i think jon white has done this on his 88 conversion......as for locating the intercooler it can be placed in front of the series rad with a little bracketry....

  18. The 200 does fit in an 88 chassis with the turbo, no problem at all, the 109 however is a different story, the chassis rails are taller so the turbo housing fouls. Use the 300 turbo instead.

very true......and if youve got a defender tdi its even easier.......also with regards to tdis eating gearboxes...i know of one series with tdi thats been to italy two or three times and lots of offroading and is still on the same box...so yes its all down to sympathy and driving ...
  19. Hi TeriAnn,

Welcome to the forum, good to see you here. Your input and experience is sure to be an asset to everyone that posts, and lurks, here.

As a long time follower of your website showing various modification ideas I know that you will be able to steer us in the right direction.

    G.

that looks rather nice.....and unlike the zeus and other conversions you,d always be able to get parts if companys went bust....
  20. Drove my new 109 2.25 petrol back from nottingham fine no issues....since getting her home for some reason the fumes in the cab are eye stinging??????

Having no experiance with petrols is their any easy things that i could look at doing to possibly sort as its a shame to not use it in this weather?????? :)
