The best way is to measure the length of the springs with the truck sat on level ground.
The front spring should be approx 260mm long and the rear 300mm long, measured seat to seat, for a std height.
I measured the springs from the top to the bottom, so hopefully that is what you meant. The front was more like 275280 and the rear 300.
Got a pick of the front spring with tape measure, how do I upload a pic, I can't seem to work it out? I have nothing in 'My media' and the image button asks for a URL.

Measure the distance between the floor & a fixed point such as the underside of the front bumper (assuming the bumper is standard) & post the height.
Don't forget to include tyre size & rim diameter
Hiya, finally got there! The bumper is c. 52/53 cm from the deck, measured to the underside. Tyres are 225/75/R16

Everything else is standard as far as I know. It looks lifted as it has diddy 225's on it, but the garage think the springs are poss bigger than standard. I will get my tape measure out tomorrow.

Hi guys,
I have a Defender 90 that is experiencing repeated front prop/UJ wear/failure and need to know if it has been lifted or not. Is there a simple measurement I can take from say the axle to somewhere that will tell me this?
If it has been lifted, it is not my much and I don't think enough to be causing the issue, but I could do with knowing one way or the other.

Back home now all in one piece after a slow and nervous journey back in rear wheel drive. Thank you for all the help and support and parts availabilty! Taking it to the garage tomorrow to get it looked at. Gears were clunking and clanking a bit in the lower gears, so hopefully not into a new box as well....

Thanks guys for all your responses. Took it to a garage and they said the front diff is knackered too. Not able to get parts cos of weekend so driving it back in 2 wheel drive mode to Sussex to fix there. Nice dent and scrapes in the base of the gear box? but no oil leaking out. Some bits of chassis defo not there anymore but inability to post pics from my phone and my ignorance of landy anatomy is not helping name them.

I very much doubt you are ever going to find a Land Rover of that age which is going to be perfect, certainly not in terms of lack of oil leaks. Your man really needs to be specific in regards to the source of the leaks for any kind of accurate diagnosis to be made here, in general terms many of them leak a bit of oil here and there to a greater or lesser degree and over time the odd drip of oil being blown about in the slipstream can look a lot worse than it actually is
I am prepared for oil leaks, that is not a problem, they are to be expected, it was just the wording of excessive I was trying to get to the bottom of whilst unable to speak to the engineer.

1) Is quite normal as the galvanised chassis comes without a vin stamped as it's a replacement.
2) The bearing on the 300 tdi fan is in the front casing that the fan is mounted to and from memory the official way to replace it is to replace the whole casting.
If it helps diagnose/translate what he is saying: Over the phone, the guy said it could stay put for some time, or the fan could come off and go through the radiator.

Questions as a result of the RAC check...
1) There is no VIN stamp on the replacement galvy chassis. Is this normal/acceptable?
2) There is excessive play in the radiator fan bearing. Is the bearing in the fan itself or elsewhere?
3) Excessive oil leaks from the lower, upper engine and the gear box. Does anyone know the meaning of excessive in RAC car check terms? Is this excessive for a landy or excessive for a eurobox?

If it's ex-FC then it will have had a hard life with them I would think, based on what our Land Rovers here get put through anyhow. May be different where it was based but the forest roads up here are very rough with huge potholes, and when in the Land Rovers people don't slow down for them at all.
However what with the chassis change I would imagine the suspension will have had some attention, which is where they take the most battering, so it should be OK. Check the bushes and shocks all the same
It was not FC to the best of my understanding, but still forestry/arboricultural so it will have been 'well used'. I went to see it today and have secured it. Additional paperwork shows new springs, dampers, bump stops, front turrets, rear brackets and a full polybush replacement, so hopefully it will be just fine!

Thanks Cwazy, I am still going to clamber all over/under this thing as per usual, but we are also getting an RAC check done if we go for it, to cover all the bits I don't know (which is most of it!).
Photos will naturally be supplied in the event of successful check, neg and purchase...

There's a company up here (North East) who specialise in chassis swaps, when they fit new chassis' they also fit a plate that looks exactly like the one in the pic.
I can't read the writing on the plate from this pic, but the layout/format appears the same.
But..... they don't strip the body/bulkhead, they lift the body off in one piece.
Additional info re plate and works carried out...

I am far from an expert, but if you are looking to add inward facing seats to the bench tops, the boarding will just add more height to the overall setup, as the seats bolt through the bench tops. You will, I understand, need to look at who you are planning to put in the back as inward facing seats are (a) not very safe in a crash, as everything squishes forwards and (b) insurers are not overly happy with this setup (presumably for the same reason)
I recently fitted some forward facing, folding seats and belts that I bought from fleabay and they are a great option as they fold out the way onto the benches for everyday storage. Again, as they fold forward and out, you need to think about who you are putting in them. I say this as I have a little person and they are not safe in such seats.
