  1. When you press the button on the fob, do the indicators flash?

if not, then the fob isn't working properly

if the indicators do flash, when you turn the key to "start" do you hear any clicking? (ie starter, or under the LH seat)????

if so, it could be the spider unit playing up. bogmonster did a very thorough tech article on how to strip and sort it out, although on a defender it's in a small box riveted into the battery box (under the LH seat)

    Thanks Jim

I have been having a bit of a fiddle about and now suspect it is the starter motor that is AWOL. There does appear to be power feeding to the starter but nothing from it. Question now is how on earth do you get a starter out of a 200tdi. There doesnt seem to be any room to shift it. Does the turbo and exhaust need to come off ? - surely not !

  2. I have an L reg 90 CSW which appears to have the factory fitted immobiliser system. There is a Land Rover fob and button to disarm the immobiliser. Only trouble is it isn't disarming and so I can't start the vehicle. The battery on the immobiliser fob seems ok - or at least the little red light on it shines when the button is pressed. But when I turn the ignition on the vehicle the dash lights come on but the starter motor doesn't kick in. I think the immobiliser is playing up (although I guess it might be something else). Main vehicle battery is fullycharged.

Any suggestions would be great as it is a beached whale at moment.

  3. If you want the lift to improve offroad performance, many offroaders choose Old Man Emu (OME) gear.

The boys who take this game very seriously indeed (and whilst I do a lot of competitions, there are others who take it far more seriously than me) often fit OME and I really cannot recall anyone having had a failure in these items. Google their name and you will find many testimonials to a good, strong and reliable product. As one site puts it "In the world of quality offroad suspensions, there's Old Man Emu, then there's everything else".

  4. Recently acquired my dream car and would welcome any advice on how to restore her to her full glory.

Got an Lreg (200tdi) 90, CSW in red. Totally original, never molested or abused. The chassis is literally as good as new and interior is mint. The only thing showing anysigns of ageing is the bodywork. The red paint work has faded and there is the start of blistering on rear door and lower edges of passenger / drivers doors. Some moderate rust on rear door around the handle (in the recessed area).

My question is, how to tackle the existing blistering and slow down any additional blistering. As she seems to "rust" from the inside out, it is actually possible to tackle this, or will I just have to put up with it or buy new doors.

    Great forum BTW :D

  5. I've been keeping an eye on eblag, but doors tend to be collection only (even when I offer to arrange collection with a courier) and I live in NE Scotland.Of course, it can also be difficult to gauge condition.

There are lots of good stuff on Fleabay which are collection only. But I discovered Parcels2go.com who will pick up and deliver all over UK. Got a set of 4 Freestyle wheels and tyres delivered from the Midlands to Northumberland for £39. Arrived in 2 days, no problems at all. Seemed like a great bargain to me as the round trip would have been over 450 miles (or nearly £100 in fuel) plus a day off work plus the horrors of driving thru Brum !

  6. Defender and Disco axles and suspension are the same, so the wheel backspacing is the same. Normally 4.75". You can get aftermarket rims with less backspacing.

OK, I have adjusted the steering lockstops. To prevent the tyres contacting the radius arms the lockstops have had to come all the way out, such that the end of the bolt is actually now recessed within the lock nut. Surely this can't be right ? The Freestyles are genuine Landrover alloys, or at least the Landrover name is moulded into the edge of the wheel.

    Any other ideas gratefully received.

  7. I have 265/75R16 BFG MT's on Freestyle/Tornado alloys and I have not adjusted the lock stops from the standard set by LR when the vehicle was built. They just brush the radius arms at full lock on rough ground but no problem on the road. So you shouldn't have a problem and I can't figure out why you have

This is doing my nut  The turning circle is so bad I almost need to do a shunt going around a roundabout

Is it possible I have a set of Freestyles with the wrong offset for a Defender (I think the wheels were off a Disco 300tdi) ? If so, is thereanything I can do about this (fit spacers perhaps) or have I wasted a wad of cash ...?

  8. I have recently acquired thru ebay a set of freestyle alloys fitted with bfg all terrains (265 - 75 - 16's). Having fitted these to my 200tdi 90 CSW I was disappointed to find that the wheels catch the panhard rods on what feels like half lock (certainly well before full lock anyway). Is this normal or have I accidentally bought freestyles with the wrong offset? They are classic Landrover Freestyles (or is it Tornado's) and I think they are probably off a Disco.
