  1. With a Big MIG welder

If I change the Gas to Pure Argon, can I buy Stainless wire and weld with MIG Stainless ?

Is thwere anything else needing changing, ie tips or liner etc ?

If my Steel welds are OK whats the likelhood of decent MIG Stainless welds ?

(I know MIG ali is just a horrible mess )

Over to the grown up / pro welders ta :)

I did exactly that to make a stainless exhaust but I only tacked it and took it to an adult to tig. The tacks were fine appeared no different than tacking in mild. I did have a little go and apart from blowing the odd hole it seemed fine, nowhere near as neat as tig mind but it worked for me.

  2. Put your boost gauge back in and a before and after comparison might be interesting. Are you sure you are not just enjoying the extra power? If you are getting better acceleration and less smoke the bigger intercooler must be doing its job. Put a new air filter in and a new fuel filter as a slightly blocked fuel filter reduces fuel pressure and by default retards timing slightly which increases EGTs. Your tickover EGTs are low anyway.

  3. Thought it appropriate to post about the excellent customer service by 4allfours. I have a set of sumo bars that are over 3 years old, I thought the threads were a little loose so emailed Ian at 4allfours who immediately agreed to replace them FOC all I had to do was send mine back for inspection. I received the replacement bars today. Credit where its due.

  4. I think this is the same as the 1st ebay item listed fitted to a 110. This is the thread on ORRP.com where its from http://www.orrp.com/smf/index.php?topic=50194.0 . Its owner is GMC62LANDY who may be a member here too. As you can see he has had to go through the innerwings an a defender, I don't know if you have more room in a disco. Please keep us informed. The pic I want to upload is a bmp and this site wont let me upload it. I am at work so can't convert it but its on the thread I have linked anyway.

  5. Cret do you mean an egt gauge? water injection cools the intake charge which makes it more dense, exactly the same as an intercooler. Shouldn't be relied on though as it may have ran out when required and doing that too many times will if EGTs are too high require a new exhaust manifold at best. I agree with everything you are saying, alot of people use petrol tuning vocabulary on diesels and it does not apply, detonation and lean being two things. For every degree you can drop the intake charge you will drop the EGT the same amount, water injection is used alot in the states in diesel engines mainly in drag and sled pulling usually its washer fluid in various strengths for more power. Also used by some to keep egts under control whilst towing up some of the long grades. I personally think a bigger intercooler is the first step but after that then this is a good choice. BTW are you fitting a bigger intercooler? You must have the patience of a saint to do all that typing as just typing this has tested mine. Good luck, the EGT gauge is a must.

  6. I have just bought a set of superpro, I was after rear axle only (trailing arms plus A frame) and was quoted £110. They are currently on offer for £130 for a complete set, so naturally I bought a full set. I got mine from 4X4 mail order postage was free for over £50 and they turned up next day.

  7. Sounds real nice, I realy like the 6BT engines.

Found some other Land Rover with Cummins diesel:

The 109 with the 6BT looks like Handbuilt,s Rover. He hangs out on Pirate4x4 in the Rover section. There has been a thread on here of it wheelin. I also posted a pic of under the bonnet, I will post it again if I can find it.

  8. I would have thought the Cummins a little low revving? The one in my lorry goes into the red at just over 2000.

A 6BT will rev to about 2500rpm if you want some more on a rotary pump 3200rpm springs can be changed in the pump http://dens-site.net/Dodge_CTD/Governor_Spring/index.html and if you have an inline P pump either a 3GSK (3200 rpm) or a 4GSK (4000rpm) but the 4GSK Governor Spring Kit needs the 60lb valve springs installing as the valves will start to float over 3600rpm. I think if an engine has a exhaust brake then it will already have the 60lb exhaust springs but not sure if it also has the 60lb inlet springs. Is your engine a 6B or a 6C?

  9. If I had a mechanic that was going to glue pvc drainpipe together to connect my airfilter to my turbo I would be looking for a real mechanic, with atleast basic welding skills. Stainless 76mm a few bends and a bit of straight tacked together and then mig'd. you could buy more tube and use it to make a proper exhaust. There are some who think drainpipe is OK but I'm not one of them.

  10. Mine also has vented discs, not sure if all vented discs on sal fronts are the same but mine are thicker, about 1/4" thicker than normal 110 vented fronts. Mine also have 110 4 pot calipers but it looks like yours does too only with no spacers in them. The calipers are standard 110 and pads on mine are supposedly harder material but that would probably result in faster disc wear so will replace with ferodo or equivalent. Sal rears come in 2 flavours, std & heavy duty the only difference that I am aware of is the tube thickness. I am not sure if all front sals are the HD variety but I know mine is. BTW the thicker discs are extremely expensive but can be changed to std thickness vented discs with the thinner caliper spacer.

  11. As already suggested anything chevy, I had a th350 behind mine it did OK but was happier with a manual NV4500 I also gained about 25% more mpg. It depends on whether you want auto or man and what you are using it for. Th400 would be OK, a 4L80e would be better but needs the standalone computer which are expensive. I would think all the stout 4 speed manuals would fit but getting hold of one might be harder and flywheel/clutch would be rarer too. Good luck. BTW is it Turboed? and whats it for?

  12. I remember the ones you were talking about. The were a billing a couple of years but haven't see them there in a few years. As far as I remember the guys built them themselves but the chassis was produced by Design A Chassis. The second year I saw them at Billing the 6x6 was on Design A Chassis's stand there.

For the last 4 years or so the 6 wheel Defender has been in the overflow camp site next to the offroad course. much quieter and less theft/pikies.
