  1. Hi had a new cable fitted at work a few months ago now the catch has seized :(

Have taken the grill off and tried to move the little lever manually but it just wont pop up.

Have tapped it with a hammer too but no joy. Any suggestions ?

Also would like to replace it with one like this if anyone knows where to get one thats in stock as thexmod has sold out.

  2. They are normal white eight spokes, with thin green and yellow lines around the rim. They are new and boxed, badged as Colways. £30 each. Paul Humphries is running a set if you want any user feedback.

Hi do you have any of these left ?

    Failing that:

I minished off (well almost) my 'Mog rims last night.

My top tip is to use a slice off an old bolt, to make a filler piece for the old valve hole. A lot easier than cutting a bit of plate.

Hi how much would you charge to so a set, if I found some. Im not far from winchester and can drop them off (once found)

  3. all landrover steering boxes leak to some extent .

every landrover vehicle ive ever had has done this .

they will still last a long time and hardly lose any fluid to speak of .

i little drip will look like a lot of oil once its spread out onto the casing .

the easiest way to stop this without any major surgery is to top the steering fluid reservoir up with some brake fluid , this will swell the rubber seals slightly and they will stop leaking .

brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid and will not pose a problem with you steering working .

try a couple of caps full or teaspoons full of brake fluid at first and then wait a few days of normal use and see what happens.

you can add a little more brake fluid if you need to after this and then check again .

get the engine/steering box steam cleaned off as well , especially before an MOT

most of the time the high pressure fitting on the power steering pump may present a slight drip , they use copper seals and dont allways seal fully .

there are "leak stoppers" you can buy in bottled form for stopping leaks in transmissions and steering boxes , but generally these will most likely contain brake fluid anyway .

theres not really any secret formulas in the additive market , just normal products mixed to look like something else .

    .

Thanks tried the brake fluid thing. No joy its p*&ing out. Used almost 1/2 ltr driving round the block with a dripping trail behind the car. Looks like time for a new box.

  4. Hi scoobydooz,

Same box as mine and when i got a leak i bought a seal repair kit- this cost 35-40quid inc postage.

    There is about 30 seals inside the kit!!!!! :( :( :( :( :o :o :o :o

After i got the kit, i read up on any tips to fit seals in the archive section.

Got a tip about putting half a cup of brake fluid into the power steering fluid!!!

I thought "sod that, it'll bugger me bits up", however, the seals kept looking at me telling me to try the brake fluid!!

    So i did!

IT makes the seals swell and my leak stopped within a week.

Still got the kit though just in case!

Reading your message again i see you lost aLOT of fluid real fast- not sure brake fluid will help here, you may need a kit or a new box! :o

Good luck with it, let me know if you change the seals as i'd like to do it in the future!

OK cool I will try that. I might go the new box route if that doesnt work as thhere are lots of seals !

Even if it slows it down enough to get me to work (55 miles away) and get a mechanic there to do it for me it would be worth it.

    Thank !!!!!!

  5. Hi Im new to land rovers. Just got a 1990 90 with a 200tdi engine and been putting the usual steering guards wheels towing points snorkel on etc and was out for the second time and lost all my power steering fluid. I put 1 ltr in and that was gone within 30 mins too. Having a look today I see a leak at the back by a little slot. Pics attached.

Do I need to buy a new steering box ? It looks like a plate at the back I was thinking it might be just a seal. If so is this easy to change.

Any advice appreciated, Im willing to have a go but seem to be working on it more than driving it.

  6. Td5 wheel won't make any difference. The only solution is a smaller wheel. I'm 6' 5" too. and use the MUD Rails with a 380mm OMP Velocita wheel. Perfect!

Tried a 350mm MOMO wheel and found the step-down in size too drastic for me. OMP was the only larger wheel I could find (that didn't have that 'vintagage' look) in a 380mm diameter. Mine came from Demon Tweeks. Cost £120. Do an Ebay search and you can find them for £99. Boss came from Gigglepin. £50-ish.

In case anyone's intersted I still have the brand new leather 350mm Momo Tuner wheel. £90.

Hi thanks for the info. 380mm is 15", I have an email from gigglepin and they do a 15":

The only 14" wheel we can supply for that age Defender is a 3 spoke vinyl wheel which costs £38.00 +vat and the boss is £16.40 +vat,

you can view this wheel on the www.bearmach.com , they also do a 15" wheel to suit your vehicle in leather which is a nicer feel. ( £55.00 +vat.) and same boss.

    Kind Regards

Just out of curiosity what size is the thin type steering wheel on the 200tdi's. Havent measured it as its a work 60 miles away and im not in for another week ?

  7. Im having problems and will need a new wheel. Just been off roading today for the first time, enjoyed it.

Im 6ft 5", just put mud rails on and still having problems pushing the brake as my legs are too long for my 1990 defender 90. Looking to get a new wheel. I have the thin large one at the moment. Ideally dont want to bring the wheel any closer to me either as it feels close enough at the moment.

Not sure if a td5 wheel will make enough of a difference.

  8. Hi Im new to the land rover thing at the moment, but am keen looking to get one as alot of guys at work have them with one guy having about 6.

I work in a body shop so I was thinking of getting an older one that needs a respray as I can get that done really cheap.

But this looks nice, shame its not on the south coast near me and £6500 like the guy above priced it I would be on my way to have a look !
