If I buy a defender I have no intention to let it go for as long as it runs. I do intend to do basic services on it.

Many thanks. I'm looking at a 56 plate defender 110 station wagon, 62000 miles one the clock. Would a Disco of the same age etc be dearer to run. I'm mainly thinking of services.

Which would be cheaper to run, Defender or Discovery. As a Defender is a more basic vehicle would it be cheaper to service ?

I went to look at one today, bdy work was mint, under carriage in my uneducated opinion was solid, bulk head was spotless, engine was quiet, no smoke, power steering had no play whatsoever, All electrics worked fine. There was a Britpart spare on it underneath the wheel arch again uneducated guess looked like a shock absorber but not the main one if that makes sense. Please excuse my lack of knowledge here. I am fully aware that defenders are not a luxury vehicle, in fact they are an agricultural vehicle that is perfectly able to perform as a family transporter, I fully accept their imperfections and as I said previously I drove a defender, nae lived in a defender for a while during my time in the army and when I felt that door pressing against my right shoulder today it brought a lot of good memories back ! I have to thank everyone on this forum as it is invaluable, please keep your experiences and advice coming. There is obviously people on this forum who know their stuff, which is why I am here.

Forgot to mention that this company give you a three month warranty. Hopefully if there was anything major I would discover it in that time. Also an option to take out an extended warranty if required. I am considering that option also.

I think I'm starting to get the picture here. I will research as much as I can as to where to look on the vehicles chassis. I have picked up a few basics from looking on line. This forum is a grat help.

I have thought about what you said, but to counteract that I was thinking that yes they may have been driven hard but they will also have been looked after with regular servicing and repair. However I know nothing about mechanics so I am open for advice .
Is there any work that may have been carried out on the vehicle that would give any cause to stay clear ?

Was meant to be going to view the vehicles today however it is now tomorrow afternoon I am going. I assume that SHB will have records of what and when any services or other work has been carried out on the vehicles. If they do will they provide me with a record of it if I ask ?

Brilliant, thanks I'm away to look at two tomorrow both at shb a 2004 and a 2005 both 110 TD5 csw with approx 80000 miles on each of them, looking forward to it !

Thanks for your reply. This forum is really helpful. I am not very mechanically minded and I am doing as much research as possible, bordering on obsessive! I will mainly be using this for a family car and to get to work and back which is only a 12 mile round trip so I will not be putting high miles on the defender I buy. Sometimes when there is so much information out there these days I find myself only reading and digesting the things I want to know. There is definitely more positive feedback for defenders of all ages and engine variations. However there are always people who put the frighteners on me and tell me to avoid Landrovers like the plague. And of course there is the 200TDI, 300TDI, TD5, which is best debate. I will keep reading and thanks again to everyone on this forum who is helping with my research.

I'm sure you don't, you don't need a PSV to drive a mini bus, I'm sure you don't need one to drive a defender

Thanks for the prompt replies. I intend to use this as a family vehicle. Daily commute of about 10-15 miles a day. Pack it for weekends in the mountains and occasional camping trips. Maybe the odd off road day for old times sake. I have spent months researching this vehicle, weighing up the pro's and cons. The cost of running it isn't an issue my only concern is reliability. As long as it starts and gets me too and from where I want to go then hopefully I will enjoy it as much as I used too. I would be grateful for any more advice about this model regarding the original post and the reliability of this model.

Hi,
The first vehicle I ever drove was a landrover defender wolf during my time in the army. I lived in this machine at times, travelled all over the country, off road courses, tactical driving etc. I loved this vehicle, it was a part of me and I crave that feeling again ! I am going to see a Defender 110 TD5 CSW next week. It is being sold by a company called SHB a 4x4 hire company. I imagine the fleet will be well looked after and regularly serviced. I just want to know if anyone has any experience of ex rental companies like SHB and whether it would be a good idea to buy from them. Its a 2005 model with 86000 miles on the clock.

Drive dedender in the army, I am not interested in refinement , as the last post said, a bit of fun and adventure. It was more a matter of interest, I just assumed the Disco would be dearer to run, totally uneducated impression
