  1. Hi all,

    I've now come to the part were I've installed the 200TDi into my Series IIa and getting ready to start her up soon :D

    Have a couple of questions on quantity of oil and antifreeze.

    Would the below quantity be correct for each item?

    I have purchased GL4 oil to use in these parts.

    Swivel - 1/2 litre each

    Axle - 1 3/4 litres each

    Gearbox - 1 1/2 litres

    Transfer box - 2 1/2 litres

    Regarding the antifreeze, is it best to use a 45% - 50% mix? I've used the Disco radiator in the conversion and live in Scotland.

  2. Hi all,

    I'm currently having problems bleeding the clutch :(

    I've converted the old single-line brake and clutch pedals/system for a later series III. I filled the clutch reservoir with fluid and opened the bleed nipple at the slave cylinder and had someone depress the pedal, after several times no fluid came out. I've left this for a couple of days and still the same.

    It all seemed to work OK when I removed it, could this be down to the piston inside the clutch master cylinder not working?? or could it be something else??

    Any advise would be grateful.

  3. Hi all,

    I'm in the process of installing a set of Subaru STI front seats into my series IIa, I currently don't have any seat frames for them to fit to the seatbox.

    The passenger tool box was badly rusted, so I'm having a new one made which will also house the batteries.

    I've come up with some idea's, but I'd like to see how other people have installed their seats in a series and still been able to get to the battery compartment under the passenger seat as this is the area I'm not getting to grips with.

    I'm also installing a 4 point harness to the front seats, which I will be using the original seat belt mounting points and fitting the shoulder straps to the rear tub upper section just behind the seat(s) which I feel will be a strong holding point!

    Any advise/guide or pictures would be must appreciated.

    I'm needing some seatbelts for my Series IIa which will have a hardtop fitted. I have all the brackets for them to fit too, just need the complete front seat belts.

    I'm currently watching a complete defender set on E*** and wonder if there is anything I should watch out for?

    Any info would be heplful.

  5. Thanks for the tip's.

    I've now connected the brakes but have found a problem with the clutch pipe.

    When I came to attach the pipe to the hose they have different fittings, the hose is new from Craddocks number RTC 3386 but the pipe from the clutch cylinder is a large type (Not the same as the brake pipes).

    Is there such a thing as an adaptor available to allow me to connect my new hose to a standard 3/16" pipe and then to the clutch cylinder?

    My current gearbox is a series IIa not a series III, which makes me thing there is a difference between these hose/pipes....

    My current series IIa has the single line none servo brake system on, I've just been able to source a complete dual brake system complete with the brake failure switch etc.

    I'm looking at replacing the current single line with this dual line brake system to hopefully gain some extra brakes ;)

    My main question is will I be able to swap the old system to the new one, and will I need to do any modifications?

    The front brakes are the 11" twin off a series III and the rear are the standard ones.

    I've also got a chance to get the complete rear axle which has the 24 spline and has a circlip attached to the half-shaft, are these stronger then the standard 10 spline?

  7. Hi all,

    Currently in the process of installing the cables/pipe work for the 200TDi engine in my Series.

    I've fitted a Defender throttle pedal to the bulkhead, just needed to slightly bend the bracket to allow it to fit. A hole was drilled to allow the throttle cable to connect to the pedal.

    The cable on the Disco engine was short, and was a perfect length to the pedal. I connected the cable but then realized that I need a bracket or something to fix the cable to the footwell above the pedal.

    I came up with a simple bracket idea. Not going to go into detail how I made the bracket.....a bit easy and simple :P

    Drilled the holes in the footwell for the bracket to be attached.

    Cut some thick rubber and placed a washer onto the cable to take up some of the slack up. Fitted the bracket and attached the cable to the pedal.

    The pedal has a small amount of play (1/4") before the throttle cable tightens up, other then that all seems well.

    One question I do have, do you think this will be OK? The only way the cable can come out of the bracket is if the bolts are unscrewed and removed. Pedal moves freely and returns to the position when released.

  8. If the steel frame is not too far gone with rot then I would take off the old aluminium skin, blast the rest of the frame that is now exposed and prime and paint before fitting a new skin. Skins can be bought for not a lot and at least then you know that the frame is solid and well protected.

    I'm thinking the same to remove the damaged panels and replace with new.

    Would you know the part numbers for all the panels and were to purchase from?

  9. Evening all,

    Been busy painting the Landy lately and thought it was time to get the rear door cleaned ready to repair and apply the primer and paint.

    Looking at the rear door found the usual rusty area's with a few 100 coats of paint applied, being keen I thought it was a good idea to have the door blasted along with some other parts.

    Took the items to my old works yesterday and agreed to collect them today, on the way there I received a phone call saying that the rear door has not turned out that well!! When I arrived and looked at it I realized the rear door skin was aluminum.

    As you can see by the photos, it did not look well at all :o

    Due to me being so keen and getting the door grit blasted and destroyed, is it possible to fit a defender rear door onto a series IIa??

    Will be posting on the wanted section soon for a rear door with no window as I did take this out with all trims.

    First mistake on the project, and yes have learnt my lesson to ask before going ahead with something if not sure.....

    Just fell off my chair when I priced up the parts from Craddocks..... :lol:

    Total cost for those parts comes to £22.48 + VAT and P&P.....kids will have to go without food for a day :lol:

  12. Hi all,

    I've just noticed that the new wiper-motor I have is slightly different to the old which came off....

    The differance is the way it fits to the bracket :blink: The old one had 3 bolts which fitted the motor to the bracket, but the new motor has no fitting for these bolts!!

    Can someone please tell me how to fit the new motor to the bulkhead.

    I'm currently installing the clutch and brake pedals on the series IIa, the current brake & clutch reservoir tank is the old metal one which is rusty...say no more!

    Is there a replacement available in plastic? if so, were is the best place to purchase.

    The current system on the motor is the signal brake line with no servo.

    I'm in the process of installing a 200TDi into my Series IIa and have read in some threads that the temp sender unit should be changed out on the TDi engine with the one off the 2 1/4 petrol engine!

    Can someone please tell me what the part number is for the 2 1/4 petrol engine temp unit I should have so I can purchase a new one.

    I've found the Adaptor Water Temp Sender Unit part number 568457, which will allow the 2 1/4 unit fit to the TDi engine.

  15. Hi all,

    I'm currently looking at purchasing the brakepipe lines for the series IIa (1968) 88".

    The current setup on her is the single line system with no servo, with 10" rear drums and 11" front drums (TLS) which I believe are off a LWB series III.

    Can someone please tell me what connections I would need to be fitted on the lines, as I've been told that they will be different fittings for the front and back lines and that a cross-over maybe required (Mostly for the front cylinder).

    Second question - I've fitted a Discovery 200TDi engine and was thinking of putting a straight through exhaust pipe, would this be OK or do I need to fit a silencer?

  16. Been hit 3 times in 8 months, all of them when I was abroad in the Middle East. The credit company told me these people watch web-pages and get all info from people making purchases that day, then 2-3 days afterward hit everyone from small to large purchases.

    Got a phone call once from the CC and asked had I bought a takeaway pizza, when I told him I was in Oman he laughed and said suppose not....it would of been cold by the time it got here :lol:

    Problem is chnaging everything to the new number :angry:

    I'm currently looking at some seat's to fit into the Series IIa, the old ones have worn out. I've found some which come out of a Freelander 2005 model.

    Would these be OK to fit into the Series?? with some adjustments made to fit.
