  1. hi all,

due to arthritis issues I'm going to convert my 2004 110 td5 van to automatic.  I'm going to use the Ashcroft  V8 to  TD5 Heavy Duty Torque Converter Fitting Kit.  Has anybody used this before?, do i have to drill the td5 auto flywheel to access the 4 torque converter bolts instead of the standard td5 3 bolts.  Also as I'm using the automatic gearbox out of a 300 tdi what's the handiest way to fit the kickdown cable to the td5 accelerator pedal, and finally does anybody know the distance for the v8 torque converter to the face of the bell housing.

    thanks in advance

    Gary

  2. Hi all.

My 2004 td5 defender has developed a whine above 30mph when accelerating. It goes away when cruising or freewheeling.

Removed both drive shafts in turn and no difference. It happens in 3rd 4th and 5th gear. Think is it transfer box or gearbox.

    Cheers Gary

  3. i fitted a 300tdi  auto box  into  my  90 it was a very easy  conversion. i mounted the transfer box using  the mounts that  located the previous lt230 (  was originally  fitted with 19j  turbo engine ) . the  just  welded new engine  mounts on to  the  chassis.  this  way  your  sure  that  standard  prop shafts  fit   and  you can still retain  the  middle  seat  which  i needed  at  the time.   i  shortened the  oil  cooler  lines  for  the  auto  box  using  swagelock  fitting. I  used  the  disco  radiator  ,  hoses and inter cooler  using  all  the  disco  pipe  work.

  4. hi all,  im in the process for putting  my  2004 110  td5  on the road and preparing it of laning etc,  nothing extreme.  i  have a 24 spline truetrac currently  fitted to a disco one rear  axle,  my question  is its the truetrac unit transferable between  these diffs.  Also  fitting it to  the rear axle of the 110.  thanks in advance and sorry if the question  has been  asked before  but  i  could find the answer while searching.

    cheers Gary

  5. Hi all, I've recently returned from a tour of the pyrenees in my 90 (2500 miles ). It was using oil before I went but as the journey progressed it got smokier and used more oil, a gallon over the journey. I suspect it's rings there is 235000 miles on it. However I took the crankcase breather off the inlet pipe before the turbo and the grey blue smoke increased 10 fold. This seems strange. Has anybody any ideas why this would affect it like this before I swap in my spare engine.

  6. hi all strange one this, while driving home at the weekend i noticed my 90 ( 300tdi auto) wasnt idiling the best and hunting when at a constant rev. i changed the fuel filter when i got home, no difference, in fact seemed to be getting worse no power at all and when held at a constant rev gradually died out.

i had a new lift pump in the drawer so i fitted it no difference,

checked the quality of the fuel supply lines, the main line to the lift pump wouldnt hold a vacuum, i thought thats me sorted.

changed the fuel line from tank to lift pump all good, started it up and still the same, revs for a minute or 2 the gradually dies out when being held at a constant rev, has anybody any ideas, before i pull the injection pump for a service,

    cheers gary

  7. hi all, my nephew recently bought an ashcroft lsd, we fitted it to the rear axle last week and all seems well and good, however during a lane run at the weekend he got stuck a few times, both wheels spun on the back axle the first time and we thought magic it works the next time he got stuck only one wheel spun no matter what we did is this normal. We pulled the half shafts when we got home to make sure we had drive at both wheels, so is this normal operation for an ashcroft lsd ?

  8. i have a 1997 3.9 disco running on lpg.

it was running great on petrol but when i switched over to lpg after 6 or 7 miles it started to develop a missfire, i changed the plugs and cleaned all the electric connections i could see and cleaned the vapouriser,

took it for a run and still ok on petrol still missing on gas after a few miles.

i decided to changed the cap and rotor. this is were the real problems started, i removed the cap and pulled up the rotor arm but the centre shaft of the distributor pulled up along with it, I had to remove the distributor and reattach the weight spring and put it back it, i think ive the static timing set, no1 on compression rotor arm approaching no1 lead, but no start,

i pulled a lead and checked to see it i had a spark, im getting an okish spark but it seems to be very sporradic and not as quick as i thought it would be, has anybody any ideas of what to do next,

    cheers Gary

  9. hi all,
i have a 1997 3.9 discovery running with a tartarini ? single pont lpg system, last week the disco started to missfire very badly and was way down on power and wouldnt rev and eventually wouldnt run, i switched over to petrol and eventually it strarted and run but quite rough. i got it home changed the plugs and cleaned out the gas ring ( quite black) and the wee servo that supplies the gas to the ring (also quite black).

i drove a bout for 30 or 40 miles on petrol and established that it was going ok on petrol. no miss fire smmoth idle and plenty of power. i filled it with gas tonight and after about 10 miles the missfire reappeared but left as soon as i switched over to petrol.

i have never serviced the vaporiser and i can see no filter.safe to say it hasnr been serviced for the last 6/7 years. would a clean out of the vapouriser help this issue or am i overlooking something. ??

could anybody show me a link on how to clean/service a vapouriser or explane the procedure?

    cheers gary
