  1. 1986 Vintage 110.

    When trying to start i can hear a relay clicking in the fusebox area, the caution brake light warning light illuminates but the starter will not operate.

    Is it normal for the brake warning light to illuminate when in start position? I cannot remember seeing it before but then i was not really looking for it!

  2. Thanks for all the information.

    The Garage have had a look and report the diff has cracked

    For now the garage have suggested fitting the complete Discovery gearbox / transfer box. (Once i have got the gearbox to them that is)

    I will keep the old one & perhaps rebuild or replace the transfer box during the summer.

    While its out a new clutch is probably worth doing & they can replace the slightly dodgy starter motor as well.

    Are many parts going to have to be swapped from the 110 box to the Disco box?

    Will it be simpler just to swap out the transfer box rather then the entire gearbox?

    There a good little local Garage (I have no facility's usable during the winter) but not land rover specialists.

  3. Hello.

    My 110 county, Originally 2.5td, Currently 200tdi has gearbox problems.

    It started with a whine about 1 week ago.

    Next it started making Banging noises & jumping out of high ratio.

    Then the speedo stopped working

    Now it sounds just like a very old London tube train complete with the vibration!

    I guess the transfer box is foobar

    It was involved in an accident a couple of years ago where the front axle moved back, jammed the slide on the front prop & eventually sheared the bolt off the front diff so i suspect the front output from the transfer box might not have enjoyed that much.

    I have access to a low mileage disco 1 complete gearbox & transfer box.

    I know the final ratio is higher than the landy box but, will the 1st gear ratio be much higher?

    Its a heavy vehicle (winch etc fitted) & it will struggle pulling away on a slope with trailer with a 1st gear higher than the current.

    Any help re the above gratefully received, also do i need any special parts to make it fit.

  4. I have had a set kicking around for a couple of years, fitted the rears a while back but decided to fit the fronts this weekend.

    All went well but the front radius arm to axle bush's are to long (by approx 1/4 inch). I modified them no problem but wondered if there are 2 types of radius arm, a thin and a wide version.

    I am pretty sure they were correctly ordered but it was a good while ago.

    Its a 1988 1110 csw, originally a 2.5td engine.

    front axle wheel studs, FRC6137 - cant find a length measurement

    from google search FRC7577 (Wheel Stud - 60mm)

    I know there is a lot of debate about this, however it looks wrong on the vehicle, unless the wheel nuts are shorter now?

  6. Have wheels, fitted ok but ... the studs are a little short.

    looks like 20 of FRC7577 are required.

    I Guess its because its a 2.5td vintage 110 with drum rear axle, looks like the later axles have the longer studs as standard.

    Hopefully the slightly short studs wont cause any problems in the short term (used only on road at the minute)

  7. Not good news from the garage.

    They have identified the water leak as a gasket failure on the timing case to block gasket (err1607)

    Anyone had this one fail & had any luck with radweld or similar or any tricks to fix without having to dismantle the whole timing case etc?

    Looks like the oil problem is on the back burner for now.

  8. Checked air filter, no sign of any oil in there ... but the 200tdi breather is after the filter rather than before as the 2.5td.

    Its going to the garage tomorrow (dont have time & no access to anywhere to repair it, damn it) so i will get them to check the oil filter when they fix the water pump.

    The forecast is for snow towards the end of the week down here & i bet it is still off the road & i will have to struggle around in the old bmw.

    I rekon the landy knows its going to snow & dislikes like the stuff so breaks itself ... it always appears to be broken when it snows.

    Perhaps i could do a snow forcast based on when the landy breaks down!

  9. Further checking of the oil filler, when the engine revs there is negative pressure on the cap.

    I assume this is because the breather leads into the engine air inlet.

    To fully check for top end pressure do i need to remove the pipe from either the inlet or rocker cover?

  10. There is a hit of blue about the exhaust smoke. I would expect a lot given the amount of oil its using though?

    It is not breathing heavily, oil vapour from rocker cover but no pressure to speak of.

    I think i will put the turbo that came with the disco engine on & try that as it looks pretty easy to swap over.

    So looks like cold hands again wrestling with water pump and turbo.

  11. 200TDI with approximately 120k miles on it.

    Originally from a Disco but all ancillaries changed so same as a defender one.

    It is using about 1 litre per 250 miles.

    There is no evidence of a massive oil leak.

    Its not smoking excessively.

    The turbo is the one from my original engine and there is some evidence of oil around the outlet to inter-cooler pipe at the turbo end.

    I have checked the timing case (the wading plug was in) and no sign of any oil when plug removed.

    The wading plug is not in the bell-housing & no evidence of any oil in there.

    As a complete aside (probably because i treated it to £50 derv topup) it has decided to throw all its water out the back of the water pump.

    How many types of water pump on the 200 tdi engine?

    Any advise on the above welcome, especially if there is anything i should check while replacing the water pump.

  12. My 1986 110 front axle has started making some odd noises, started with a grinding noise, now makes a very loud screeching sound, not particularly dependent on speed, brakes and not always there.

    The vehicle was in a bump a while back which compressed the front prop & it stayed compressed, only discovered this when the forces sheared the bolt off the front differential & the differential fell to pieces!

    Since this i have had my suspicions about the front axle & gearbox, the gear box appears to be ok so far though.

    Assuming its front axle (more investigation this weekend, hopefully a stone in the disc buts sounds to loud for that) i was thinking of fitting a later complete unit in.

    What is the best type compatible with my vehicle & ideally front prop shaft?

  13. Is there more than one type of thermostat for the 200tdi (defender housing). from my parts books i can only see one type.

    I Bought one a while back & it had a rubber seal ring, the supplier said there are 2 different types & to remove the rubber ring.

    Did this & was never that happy with the engine temperature, now having replaced the block its running erratic temperatures & with further investigation the out on the rad is cold.

    I will remove the thermostat tomorrow as a temporary measure & check the rads good... But want to make sure i get the correct thermostat to bung back in.

  14. Its between the block and the back of the timing cover so only applies if your taking the whole timing casing off the block (i had to when converting a discovery engine to defender spec)

    Its on the parts diagram but annoyingly i failed to notice it & had to strip the whole thing down again to stop oil leaking from the adjuster bolt.

    So when just replacing the cam belt its not an issue unless you have an oil leak from the adjuster bolt. or need to take the back timing case off the block.

    I read every tutorial on the web before changing my cambelt and never heard about this gasket, now I'm getting cambelt paranoia !!!

  15. My 200tdi (Conversion from 2.5td) is reading high but not always. (most of the way through the white part of the gauge)

    Its the standard 2.5 td temperature gauge with a defender 200tdi sensor. (the 1st 200tdi defender engine was a bit of an unknown quantity but i think its a defender sender)

    It appears to drop back quite a lot if i switch the ignition off then back on

    Is there a voltage regulator behind the dash somewhere?

    Does anyone know what resistance, for optimal running temperature, the sensor should give? Also what is the optimal running temperature for the cooling water on a 200tdi.
