  1. Hi all, Just a quick update. I decided to fork out and get another run around (£600 Toyota Corolla, quick service and it's running great fingers crossed) to take the pressure off of fixing the Disco. So I have more time, till the end of the month to get it running for a family camping trip. So since the last comment I got back into the car, randomly looked at loom wires and poked around, tried disconnecting the LPG but not really understanding where the fuel injector cut off was for the LPG module. Nothing seemed to work. Then I used my ECU mate to try and switch the fuel pump on and strangely it worked (even though it hadn't previously) the car started. Ran it for 10 minutes on petrol (LPG is virtually empty anyway). Stopped and started it on the button problem about 7 times. I thought it was happy days, put the wheel back on (had it off to access fuel filter), covered up fuel pump, relaid sound proofing, carpet, panels at the back etc. Then tried to start it again...dead as a dodo! Left it for a few days as had other things to do. Did more homework on the LPG wiring, went back into the garage to do battle over the weekend. I traced the fuel injection cut off (ECU pins 11 and 13 for anyone interested), it was a double time relay under the steering wheel. I basically circumvented the relay and hard wired the fuel injection back to the ECU cutting out the LPG system and unplugged the main module. In theory if there was an issue with the LPG module or relay it should have started...but it didn't. Wasn't a complete waste of time as I felt it was fairly conclusive there wasn't an LPG issue (unless someone can tell me otherwise from reading this). I then put the LPG back together, tried again, no start. Finally I traced wiring from fuel pump, under chassis, to a rather non waterproof looking clip connecting to the rear nearside, that went through the car body up into the nearside rear cluster of lights. I did and undid the clip underneath, jiggled the cables and also the ones behind the light cluster (I thought I may have moved those when in the boot which could have disconnected/reconnected a bad earth or something allowing me to start the car the previous week. Used the ECU mate again to see if the fuel pump would come on manually, and it did! Tried to start the car...and it did! From this, I'm assuming there some kind of bad connection/earth either a cut or frayed wire in the general run, or where it clips under the body or somewhere in the light cluster. Does anyone know if there's an earth to the body hidden somewhere in this cable run from the fuel pump to the rear light cluster? I'll have to look again this weekend anyway, can drive the car as it is but will obviously be on tender hooks if I don't find the specific issue. Does it sound like I'm on the right track? I've ordered 2 new relays for the fuel injection and pump as well just in case although I can clearly hear both relays clicking. Apologies for the long post but if anyone else Googles this I'd like them to have the full picture if they have the same issue. Thanks.
  2. Hi there, Unfortunately I don't have another module at hand, there's an even older Leonardo AEB175 on Ebay at the moment that I might be able to get for £15 to try. I'd still take it to garage to tune but at least I could start the car (and if it doesn't work not waste a lot of money) and use it on petrol (although my wife is apparently enjoying the walking and cycling in the goodish weather at the moment). Following this train of comments, dare I hope that I could simply disconnect the LPG module from the battery and this would at least open any circuit to the fuel pump by default? And then hey presto I can run on petrol? Please God... Thanks, Sunny
  3. Hi Fridge, Thanks for the reply, I've thrown the towel in on this and booked it into garage for next week Thursday but will play some more beforehand on the weekend and try out what you've suggested. Talking to the garage they think it might be related to the LPG system, possibly the module keeping the supply to the pump off and "stuck" in LPG mode. I'm okay at tinkering and even relatively major works (rebuilt engine top end) but auto electrics and problem finding/solving to this degree is a bit beyond me. Any other thoughts welcome and thanks again :-)
  4. Hi all, Major SOS. A few days ago my wife was driving the 1998 Land Rover Discovery 1, 3.9 Auto, LPG conversion. She parked up (running on LPG), left the car for an hour or so and then when she came back it wouldn't start. My LPG system starts in petrol then automatically switches to LPG at the appropriate temperature (over 2,000rpm to initiate the auto switch). She rang me and said we'd run out of fuel as the guage had gone down and the empty light was on. I knew for a fact that there was at least half a tank in there so thought there was either a major leak or something wrong with the ignition/fuel supply. After she checked there wasn't the smell of petrol or any puddles under the car I made her start on LPG . She went to the nearest garage, filled up with more petrol but same problem again. So again she started on LPG and came home. I did the following checks; 1. turned key without starting to listen for relay and fuel pump priming; heard 1 click on relay but no whirring of pump. Noticed that if I kept key in without starting the fuel guage needle would creep up to show real amount of petrol in tank. But once I turned to start it the needle would drop (whilst engine turning but not starting) back to zero and empty light come on. 2. checked 12volt supply for 2 seconds to fuel pump once key turned; yes there was 12 volts 3. cleaned contacts to relay and pump, no difference From the above I ascertained that it was the pump, so ordered new pump and fitted. But of course, this doesn't work. What happened after installation; 1. turned the key (but not all the way so not turning engine), heard relay click, new fuel pump whirr and prime. 2. then turned key all the way to turn and start engine, started, revved quite high by itself 1000rpm +, then settled and slowly died. On about 6-7 seconds. 3. turned key again (didn't listen for fuel pump), same again, started, revved high then died but slighty shorter time on. 4. turned key again, turning but no start 5. checked fuel inertia switch, never looked at it before so not sure how subtle or not "off" is but pushed it down and no discernible movement or click. turned key again, no difference. 6. foolishly tried to start it on LPG cold, nearly started then backfired at air intake (I've backfired before when LPG was out of tune so I know I've probably fried the AFM previously anyway). Why I did it? To see if there was a problem with the spark, logic being if it starts and runs on LPG there isn't an issue there. Stupid I know. 7. depressurised fuel system then turned key again (but not start) to see if fuel pump would prime again for 2 seconds but nothing, and again when tried to start car, nothing. 8. disconnected electric feed to AFM and tried to start again, nothing. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome please, a bit desperate and stressed as it's our only car and it's real struggle to get around on foot/public transport with 4 kids in different schools/nursery. Worst case scenario can anyone recommend good land rover friendly (but not dealer prices) garages localish to Gillingham Kent. Would have to get car towed there :-(. Mobile mechanic to check it over first would be ideal. Thanking you in advance.
