  1. I was reading LRM earlier and in it is the article about the millionth Discovery and support vehicles (and a S1 for some of the distance) going on the big journey over to Beijing. I saw it was mentioned in the article that all vehicles were built to Russian spec (to eventually be sold out there), but more importantly they are all petrols (5.0 litre ones in fact!) because the Diesel Particulate Filters as req. in the UK/EU would basically go kaput when the engine would be run on not-fantastic quality fuels? Does this suggest that in the nearish future it'll become a lot more difficult for people to go travelling by overland unless they start outside the UK/EU, or build a vehicle on an old identity? Or use petrol even???

  2. Is there a real need for a tank guard? The standard tank is fairly tough, and has a built in guard.

Agreed. Mine has taken some heavy blows and shrugged them off no problem. It's probably easier or more likely to bend the chassis brackets for the fuel tank than damage the skid plate.

  3. That's because Footman James put young drivers on a special "over 15 years old - classic" policy that excludes NCB. I'm now with Adrian Flux for both vehicles and I earn NCB on the 90. Don't earn it on the 88", as that's a classic policy.

Flux wanted a premium not too dissimilar to the NFU. Insurance premiums heading on towards two grand isn't something I can afford.

Of course, having to make do with not being able to build NCD just so I can get about does mean when the time does come to having a normal car, I will have a bit of a nightmare. :angry2:

  4. The description and info given for it now it's been unveiled sounds a bit Freelanderish. But saying that, it wasn't long ago since LR revealed that Defender concept some years ago which never went into production and is now at Gaydon?

  5. About half the buyers of the compact Evoque SUV are expected to be women, compared with just a quarter of Land Rover's current customers, and it is also expected to appear to a younger audience.

Many of them will probably opt for a cheaper and more frugal two-wheel-drive version, rather than one kitted out with four-wheel-drive.

This just proves it's all about the badge and nothing more.

But Mr Edwards is eager to stress that the Evoque is "just as capable, if not more capable on some surfaces, than some of our other models".

Like the road maybe because it's road focused?

  6. I have just seen it mentioned that 18,000 orders have already been placed for the Evoque? Obviously we always hear about how a company spends thousands or millions on market research, but erm, how is this research conducted? It's not like the product market research you often get harrassed about on the phone or through the post is it? So how do they do it, and more importantly, get it right?

  7. I've never seen a plate on a 2A stating the towing limit. The rating given in the manual is a drawbar pull, not the same as a trailer gross. It's a topic that seems to be argued a lot by people, with no one really coming up with anything obvious to say it can tow only 2 tons or if it can tow up to the 3.5 ton limit like later vehicles. Story has it that the later S3 had a rating of 3.5 ton however?

  8. Cheers for the replies, very informative.

I think I will probably go for the one with the diesel if I was to get one, although the power would be so nice to have. Then again, even a diesel P38 is probably going to feel quick in comparison to my 2.25 Diesel 88.

I am being sensible in thinking a decent diesel (or v8 on gas I guess) p38 can be had around the price of a reasonable 300TDi Discovery aren't I?

  9. Just thought I would drag this topic up again! What would you say for one going to Morocco? As ultimately that would be why I'd pick a Land Rover over a typical car. Or do those conditions play havoc with used components on the P38's suspension sensors and stuff?

If you're wondering why don't I take my Series, it's because it would be too valuable once it was sorted out for me to be happy taking it to Morocco and back.
