  1. I'd like a winch. It isn't for competitive use, it is for merely getting a stuck Land Rover unstuck again (i.e. my 88). Are the cheap brand winches worth their money?

    What is a second hand TDS 9,000lb likely to fetch?

  2. I don't think you would need a Salisbury for the TDi. Plenty of people keep their standard drivetrains when having fitted the TDi, with the only common-ish upgrade is to fit different ratio diffs.

  3. I wouldn't have expected it to be stiff with new bearings? When I changed the big end bearings and inspected the main bearings on my petrol engine, it was just as easy to turn over by hand afterwards as it was prior to work. Are you sure you haven't got a bearing pinched or slightly off from where it should be seated?

    If it helps any, it was possible to turn my petrol engine over by just turning the front pulley by hand. Obviously the spark plugs were out so no compression, but the same should be for your engine with the injector or/and glow plugs, right?

  4. I don't know much about the emission thing set by the EU. Does this mean that if a company made a thousand Gee-wiz thingies for the green numpties, does that mean the same company can go and make a thousand fuel drinking smoke making monster trucks? :)

  5. I've noticed they regularly refer to the Range Rover lineup as Range Rover as you do with Land Rover. It sounds like they're looking to split the two from each other, particularly with this new little one that's the size of a Freelander?

    But the fact that Victoria Beckham is involved says it all as to its target audience.

  6. FF, you seem to have focused on the workings of the car. As mentioned in my post, I understand that the "toolbox" will change and adapt to suit the home mechanic. The items I'm referring to are the accessories, and whether or not their very-short life time (compared to the car they are built into) will put people off these motor vehicles in the future?

    I think the "mainstream" will end up 'renting mobility' rather than owning cars. We don't really buy a mobile phone any more, we just get one rolled up in the contract price and then get a new one every 12 months or so. This means the manufacturers sell more units and your car isn't trapped with an 8-track/cassette/CD/iPod connection for too long.

    Isn't that what is done already with financing of car purchases? :huh:

  7. I understand that as time goes by, the tools available to the home mechanic increases as vehicles gradually become more sophisticated. Take code reading and rectification as one mere example.

    But having now paid attention to what equipment is fitted to the higher end models of many cars, I am not sure if people will own these cars in the future like people own cars from the 1990s and prior? Would the added gizmos like bluetooth, satnav, built-in dvd players and whatnot eventually put people off from owning these cars because they either no longer work or are long since superseded and cannot be easily removed? A 1980s and 1990s car can easily have a modern stereo fitted, but you're unlikely to be able to easily replace the built-in satnav, bluetooth and dvd players in (what is currently) a modern car come 10 years down the line, right?

    Doesn't this mean that we may see an increasing void between "easier" fixable cars (prior to the fitting of gadgets mentioned above) and current (now or in the future) cars, not because of developing technologies for how the car works but because of all the extras fitted that become obsolete and difficult to replace?

    OR will people just continue like they always have, and just ignore all the currently-fun/cool equipment in cars when it all stops working or becomes unusable?

    What do you think?

  8. I didn't think the 2.25 diesels could top 30mpg, then again I've never really looked at them closely because they're so damn slow it hardly seems worth it. The 2.25 petrol has a lot of love to give with a bit of tweaking, still waiting for someone to finish megasquirting one :ph34r:

    I like the petrol engine too, that's why my 88's original one is sat in the garage (to which has had new bearings, gaskets, water pump, carb, and many many more bits :ph34r: ). My only important reason for going to the diesel is the economy. Studentism means cost overules performance, as long as it can maintain a safe pace with traffic - which it does. :) (until you hit the mighty M62 climbs between Manchester and Leeds :o )
