  1. Not sure mrsFrog is mechanically minded, but given the correct directions she's quite happy wielding a spanner to help

As for fitting the hinges to the wing first, that's what I did, but then, you do run out of arm length trying to hold the door, push the bolt through the hinge and mate it with the nut on the other side, then the spanners come into action !!!

Much easier if you remove the door trim though.

  2. Just did the same with my fuel tank. 4 nuts and a couple pipes! so far it's been about 6 hours and still not off. Mind you at the end of the day the tank was loose, but the anti roll bar is now stopping it dropping out. Got to go and buy a jack and axle stands tomorrow.

It's a great way to learn though isn't it? (If I say it enough I'll belive it)

Well, I spent five hours working on the 110 today, trying to change the cambelt. I have got everything off except the timing cover. I ran out of light... timing cover will be off tomorrow, hopefully it will be plain sailing from there

I've had to drill three bolts out of the bottom pulley. Two of the bolts holding the radiator assembly simply snapped off when I tried to undo them.

Oh, and the radiator is completely shot and needs to be replaced (luckily we've found a replacement already )

What a day... and I'm not done yet !!!

  3. Had a similar experience changing one bottom hinge on front driver's door ;) So you're not alone...

Captive nut was seized solid, then started turning along with the screw. Ended up using an angle grinder to cut the hinge out.

There has to be a better way?

An extra willing pair of hands (wife ?) to hold door, spanner, bolts, etc... while you're having a think is about the best I can advise. It certainly helped me.

At least you shouldn't have to do the job again too soon ;)

  4. so 4 lamps should be ok using 25amp thinwall cable or should i up the cable to 33amp?

4x55W is 18amps at 12V so 25amp should be plenty enough.

and Relays should i go for 1 or 2? ..........2 lights one on each circuit or 4 on one circuit using two relays or is one relay ample?

Depends on the relay's rating, if the relay you're planning on using is only rated to 15 amps, you'll need 2, you can use a single relay provided it can switch 18 amps or more.

On the other hand you could plan an element of safety and fit two relays so that if one fails, you still have 50% of your lighting and aren't left in the dark ;)

Don't forget to fuse this properly (as close to the battery as possible), and use grommets or some kind of protection on the live cables wherever they are likely to rub, crush or pinch on sharp chassis parts.

  5. Yea, trailers caravans and motorhomes are all a pain to register over here unless the French have already OK'ed them. Modern cars and commercials are easy, it's the more low-volume end of things that gets tricky. Not all Ifor's can be registered here - you'd have to check the model (and serial) number with Ifor France.

    Bonne chance

Sounds like we might as well buy a trailer in France if that's the case, one less thing to worry about B)

  6. I've never seen a 200TDi that doesn't have oil in the inlet manifold, but I've only looked inside 4 of them...

Doesn't mean it's right, but to add weight to the above, make that 5, mine has oil in the inlet too, clearly coming from the pipe out of the breather into the turbo inlet tract.

  7. Tell me about it, a quick prop change turned into having to remove the the transfer output flange and transmission brake after having to grind off stripped prop bolts

Don't you love rust eh !!!

I am geting some new(ish) doors this week so will be taking my hinges off and they are reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally rusted up. The lower passanger one only opens 30 degrees then the door just hinges on the flex of the alloy door skin (I think it once had a steel frame in it) :P

Lots of people diss wd40, but I find that if you soak the nut/bolt regularly with it and let it do its job over time, it usually gets most things undone. I'd start soaking those bolts now ;)

  8. Could you not have hammered a small screw driver or a nail between the screw head and the hinge to stop it spining to drill it?

Now you tell me :P :P :P Angle grinder was a lot more fun though

To be fair I forget just how many screws, bolts, etc... I had already drilled out in my first week end with the 110 fixing this that and the other, the hinge was just another and I figured the angle grinder would get there quicker.

  9. Use penetrating oil on the screws

and give it time to work its way in... Often I don't wait long enough, but have fcound that if you are patient, penetrating oil/wd40/... does a brilliant job.

I got myself in a right pickle with one of my hinges recently, the captive nut was spinning so drilling was out of the question, the angle grinder was the only way out :o

  10. Hubby here... Thanks for the comprehensive answer ;)

    2) decide what you want to tow which governs the drawbar height and finally

I think that's the crux of it, along with deciding how to "dress" the back of the 110...

The most likely use for the trailer will be to move the remainder of our belongings across the continent, e.g. what we didn't get into a container, or the back of the landie. This isn't likely to weigh much either, and I suspect something that's 10ft long would probably be the most.

At the same time, we have an urge to do things to the landie, and that includes something at the back, either bumperettes or the NAS step (which we prefer).

I don't however want to compromise function for the sake of form, hence the question in the first place.

Do trailers usually come in standard height, or, are there trailers for normal cars, 4x4's, etc... with an appropriate tow hitch height ?

    Hope this helps :(

  11. Thanks to the owner of the white 300tdi 110 (with the lr4x4 sticker in the front window) who stopped to see if he could help when he saw my 110 csw in Tamworth services this afternoon with the bonnet up... although there was nothing you could do, (and neither could the AA man, and i had to get recovered home - leaking injector pipe.... ) it was kind of you to stop to check we were ok, i doubt it would have happened if we were both in mondeos.... ;) i finally got home at 8pm, rather than 4pm as intended, but it should only be a 5min fix in the morning, and at least it saved me using my own diesel to get home...

So, thanks, whoever you are!!! ;)

A little hand from a fellow forum or club member is always welcome. I can guarantee you that some ford owners would do it too though :P Maybe not mondeo owers though :P :P :P

  12. Such is the distance between the planets, it can take 20 minutes for an instruction sent from Earth to arrive at Mars.

Or is it double that ? It will have taken 20minutes for the video image to arrive to control centre, then 20 minutes + operator delay for the resulting command to have got back to the Rover... A lot can go wrong in 40 minutes, even at snail's pace

Just makes you realise quite how complex these things are, not quite the same as a little remote control car, and that's not taking environmental conditions into account.

  13. I lied, there are markings on my lenses, just not the slope I am used to seeing on other cars...

Here's a picture of my right hand lens (they are both the same afaik).

    PICT1072-2.jpg

I have highlighted writing on the lens, on the right it reads "Drive Left", the left hand one reads "USA".

Would it be possible for someone to mark out or paint over the area that needs to be taped up :)

    Thanks everyone B)

  14. Where exactly to you put the masking tape ???

We're off to Corsica in a few weeks, driving through France.

I've found some stick-on light bender things but our 1993 110 Defender isn't listed in the application list.

Looking at the lenses there are no markings, slopes, etc...

All I've found so far are the following suggestions:

-The lighbulb can be rotated into the headlamp with a little modification to the headlamp.

-Replace RHD headlamps with LHD ones for the trip.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Greg

  15. I think you got moderated.

On my first post - result !!! Never got moderated ever before :P

Know what you mean about the sports cars.

I have an LR for the slow lane, a Pug 306 for the middle lane & an Ultima for the fast lane.

I have two sierra cosworths (although one or both will have to go soon) as daily drives, not quite ultima pace, but a little more comfortable ;)

Love the Ultima btw, on my cars to have one day B)
