  1. i have a 110/300tdi and am wanting to start running svo. i know that i have to pre-heat the oil to avoid causing damage, so am looking a twin tank system to keep my options open. are there any thoughts on:

[*]which system or heater to purchase

[*]to channel heat into the cab first thing in the morning and warm the engine up at the same time before i set off

[*]a system that i don't have to plug into the mains but would run of the battery

[*]one that is fitted with a timer

i know there are few requirements but all thoughts welcome

  2. The front passenger seatbelt spool fell apart today when I turned on the engine. I went to buy a new one and was informed that they had discontinued the one that I wanted (defender 110 SW 1995; attached in the corner of the door frame). The new one attaches to the bracket which the spool is fitted to and looks like it attached to the floor.

My question is how do i fit the new part so that it is safe and passes its MOT? Hope this all makes sense.

  3. Don't forget that there is Roverlands of BC and Manitoba Land Rover Club.

Nearly all the above 5 clubs have some form of listing for local suppliers and on those that have their own independent forums, they have discussed the topic of importing vehicles into Canada thoroughly.

lr4x4.com is visited by many of Canadians who can advise. I left home 11 years ago.....might be worth it to go back soon. ^_^

    Todd.

Ta fella will have a look. Found a good forum from the other reply. :D

  4. Can i ask why your going to Canada?

Because its a serious option i am considering.

M'mum's family live in Norway and spent a lot of time there as a child and moved out there to live when i left school. Had Norway as first choice, then New Zealand and Canada. We were going to move out there as one of my uncles offered us 10 acres of forest land to clear, build a house and then work it, but politically the country is changing and they need to start investing a lot of their oil money in their infrastructure. New Zealand i love but seemed a bit of a cul-d-sac (nothing bad intended). My wife has cousins in Canada, they are wanting hard workers and the country is huge and lots of forests and mountains which i love. So there we go. Oh they speak English also.

  5. Bloody good move - I did it about 10yrs ago (minus the Defender) and no regrets :)

There are lots of clubs, depending on where you're going to be

    M.O.R.E

    OVLR

    ALRE

    etc.

If yours falls under the 15 year rule then afaik there are no additional safety standards to meet but there will be a basic safety check for the province/territory you are registering it in. If you're headed for Quebec then I heard they're no longer allowing RHD vehicles to be registered. There are some pretty onerous cleaning requirements as well. There are a few threads on the above forums where folks have done it recently.

Many thanks. Fingers crossed then, good job that i'm not going to Quebec :D

  6. I have finally decided to make the biggest decision of my life and move my family out to Canada. However i need to know that i will be able to take my Landy (110 defender 300tdi) out with me or at least buy one out there. However there are a few questions that i need to ask first. Firstly i have read that if the vehicle is over 15 years old it is ok, secondly vehicles in general have to comply with canadian and american safety standards, does this apply to the 15 year old vehicles? Are there many Landrover clubs out there? Are there any more laws that i should be aware of? What is the availibility of parts like? The list goes on. I would be very much appreciate any answers and comments from people who know or any anyone with any experience of driving in Canada. Ta

  7. I have recently changed all the brake discs and pads on my defender and it has left me with a very loud squeek from the rear wheels. I took the pads out and roughed them up a little along with the discs (as the pads seemed to have become a little shiney), but it still continued. I then changed the rear pads thinking this might cure it but too no avail. Please any suggestions I am sick of everyone within a hundred yards turning around to stare :(

  8. My 300Tdi made chug chug noises when the valve stem caps broke. Listen to the air intake.

In your case I would check that the tank breather isn't blocked - could also be the lift pump although those normally just stop working. Another culprit for strange noises is the vacuum pump.

Many thanks will check it today :)

  9. A strange noise appeared a couple of days ago and has been intermittant since then. Have finally pinned it down to my fuel tank. A sort of chug chug noise and there is a lot of vibration travelling through the fuel line from the tank. p.s. changed the fuel tank in July and no problems until now, however thought I was loosing a bit of power .. maybe. Ta (300 tdi)

  10. if frequency changes with speed it's sounds like something out of line or warped. Check calipers, pad wear etc too. When you have the wheel off rotate fully looking for rubbing points on disc.

    Steve

Thanks a lot for the feedback on and all. Didn't manage to take off the wheel today school holidays took over, will be be checking as soon as.

p.s. it is always a single tap :)

  11. Checked the prop shafts and replaced one joint but still there. Sounds like a small hammer tapping on the stone guard behind the wheel hub, but all seems solid. Also seems to happen when i'm slowly edging out and tap the brake a bit heavy. Am going to take the wheel off tomorrow.

  12. Hi Yoda, they have worn very well I think (tons of tread left - at least 75%) nice and even have sustained no damage from off road or road driving.

They have rarely started to let go on road unless I have been pushing really hard and even then have been very predictable.

The sidewall is well protected with grip down the sidewall they are a stiff tyre and when I have towed/loaded the car to max (including 500KG of shingle in the boot) they fely very stable and did not flex much or even look like they had much extra weight on them.

Underbraking they have been fine no worse than my BFG AT in the wet and possibly better in the dry. IMHO

they do cost a bit £100ish but I am very happy with them. wont last as long as BFG AT or be as good in the mud as BFG MT but i prefer them to my ATs

It's only a personal opinion but I would buy them again no questions.

    Lindley

Many thanks Lindley for the feedback :D

  13. Hi I have a disco 1 but fitted with 235/85/16 I used to have BFG AT which were very good but when I changed them I bought Cooper Discoverer STT which are a MT.

BUT in my experience after about 10,000 miles on these tyres I feel they are as good on the road as the BFG ATs but far better off road and actually better than the BFG ATs in hard on road braking.

    This is just my opinion.

They seem to be wearing well too. they look great too

    firemannotsam

Just looked on the Cooper web site at the Discoverer STT's and the strength of them has appealed to me. As I said always had AT's so not had the experience of MT's, how were they for the first 10,000 with regard to road braking and wear?

  14. It is time to buy a new set of tyres. I currently have a set of BF Goodrich AT (on a defender 110 300 tdi) and they have have lasted well and have never let me down. My question is should I stick with these or try some Colway or Insa Turbo. My current use is split between 50% on road and 50% working on the moors. Many thanks.
