Hi all,
I have an ‘85 110 and splashed out earlier this year on a replacement gearbox/transfer box from Ashcroft which included the r380 upgrade Of course now that the winter is coming It seems the rear oil seal has failed AND the head gasket has started blowing at the rear (2nd time in 12 months-should have got the head skimmed the first time) AND I’ve had the vehicle 5 years now and have no idea when the timing gear was done so that probably needs attention .
So I’m feeling that it may be that a full engine rebuild is called for.
sadly these jobs never seem to come in the right order (if one exists) I really was looking to do a bulkhead replacement next ho hum
My thoughts at present are:
-buy an engine off eBay,
-rebuild it swap it in
-fix the old one
-sell it on
My questions are:
-what should I look for in an engine hoist, more than happy to buy one as I have a queue of four wheeled projects ~ although haven’t taken an engine out since the early 80’s and that was on my 67 midget. I’ve read quite a few posts and long reach seems important although this may not be so key with bumper/front removal?
- should I be looking to put a different engine in (I have read lots of posts on difficulties/requirements) I don’t want to have to change my r380 so whatever I get needs to mate to that
-200tdi discovery engines are available but it seems some effort is required to plumb/connect them in- it is not completely clear the minimum I need to do with one of these~ the turbo outlet pipe seems the key thing
-it seems that V8/300tdi/td5 all require welding skills - have a little welder and can patch stuff but would not want to be taking on engine mount relocation
I will be working by myself getting the engine out and in - is this achievable?
thanks in advance for reading - and you can be assured all advice will be gratefully received!
regards
Steve
