  1. Hello. My Series III normally gets to go over the mountain and out and about but no real long trips. Wife has gone down to the city to work and I'm picking up a few friends at the airport (88 wheelbase + bags). I have a tiny oil leak from the right back wheel hub and after driving the hour and a half to the airport and turned the truck off I noticed the hub and rims are quite hot. (The gear oil was topped off this Feb so not very long ago) should I be worried driving home? I dont have the tool to top up oil in the rear axel bulkhead? When I say hot I mean I can put my finger on the bolts and hold it so not glowing crazy hot but quite hot. Ok, I'm here for another hour and the truck is cooling down but have the drive back in 30min. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Oh it's got a 200tdi dropped in it. Thank you for you time.
  2. I find myself screaming to my wife....every time we drive our Series III (1982) with a 200tdi conversion. It's very loud and I'm currently sorting out the mess of electrics so I ripped out whatever attempt previous owner did to deaden the sound (spray glued bubble wrap basically). The result even more engine and road noise. In a few weeks (it's still freezing here) I wanna do a propper sound deadening job (hood, roof, doors, firewall, seats the lot) and I was wondering what brand/type of product to use. Oh and there is a budget restrictio. I've done a ton of research and found people dropping buck on dynamat, hushmat etc down to home depot housewrap tape. I've e-bayed read reviews on Amazon etc. As we all know a mold resistant product would be to prefer since no matter what I do I find small patches of water here and there. The idea for the roof is to insulate and then cover with marine carpet. Any leads, hints, clues would be much appreciated. I just did my rear door and will post some pics of that since it turned out alright. Thanks in advance
  3. Arjan, thanks for the visuals they're great. It should fit just fine then, I'm not to picky and 2 more headlights would be great.
  4. Thank you and yeah a pic would be super cool if you have energy to dig it out. So say a defender bumper would fit ok on a series if you wanted it bad enough (and was willing to put in the time/world ld/drill) Thanks for your help
  5. So I finally got around to sorting out my blower and it works very well. 2 speed (the fastest setting sounds like it's gonna lift off the ground - that's before I start driving and it takes about 10 miles for any hot whatsoever to start blowing anything close in resembles to heat, but that's not what I wanted to ask. I'd like some more light and found someone selling a bullbar with 2 PIAA lights on that is very nice, so I'm wondering if anyone knows the standard bumper size on a defender vs. a series III, the seller won't tell me the measurements. It's a basic bolt on thing but if its smaller than my series bumber I don't wanna put in the work.(bigger is not a problem I can just pad it out) Sorry for a drawn out thing but all input is appreciated. Best D
  6. Thanks Snagger, great stuff of course it's pissing down today, first rainy day in 3 weeks so I might have to purspone til tomorrow. As of now the fan is not moving a inch so starting w wiring then see if I can lift the whole thing out and take it from there.
  7. Any thoughts on the fan issue? Gonna take it apart tomorrow, wd40 it hook it up and test it, I'll keep posted on how it goes. Hopefully it will be a warm cockpit as a result. Thanks for all the input.
  8. Ok so its starting to get a little nippy here, last winter we had temps around -20C° and I didn't have my SeriesIII (200tdi conversion) then. These questions might seem trivial but here goes: How long shall one let the engine warm (idle) for before take off? What fluids would be a good idea to change pre-first snowfall? (This is also a general maintenance question) Would it be a good idea to put in a electric heater on the engine with a wire inside for very cold days? Lastly my cab heat is not working, the radiator get plenty hot but the fan (and the cable between the unit and cockpit is not there) is dead, is there any way to resuscitate a old fan/anything worth trying before getting a new one? I'm not sure if my fan is a defender unit fitted onto my series or if its a series unit but soon i think ill be allowed to post a picture or two. Right now I just ride in thermal coveralls that works but some heat would be ever so great. Thanks in advance
  9. Hi! Thanks again for all thoughts. So I'm up on the NY Canadian border and today its -10C° so not to bad yet. Sorry for the slow update but phones and internet has been out after a storm, BUT the River now starts better and stronger than ever. Started tracing the ground wire, re-crimped, sawdered, and then started w the plus pool from the battery to the starter and when I got to the starter and the 5 different connectors on the plus thread the nut bolting them down was loose so I just cleaned and sanded (600 grit or something) the connectors, tightened the bult down and put some lithium grease on it and boom I was done - then drove the 20miles each way and got some food, beer and a bottle of Laphroaig Scotch and is now back at the dwelling. Thank you all for good advise etc. I need 2 more approved posts then I can post some pics in and there was a relay BTW starter and ignition. Next up is getting the heater working cause I drove the other night and without a thermal suit it would have been very cold, my dog was medium happy in the back. Til next time.
  10. Thanks for the replies. Gonna go out tomorrow (weather report says sunny) and I hope I can get it started. Down on food right now. I should attach a picture as to where I am (cabin on a mountain top pretty much) but I'm a new member and don't qualify just yet to post those. Any way. So gonna trace the ground wire and do the suggested test see how that goes. I never changed battery before in this truck and cant determine if there is a relay or not to the ignition switch, if I have fried it I have the get a new one correct? Anyone know how much the run roughly? I'm so amazed to have found this forum and to know I'm not alone. Thanks everyone.
  11. Thanks for the replies. Such an amazing community. The battery is brand spanking new and tested it w volt meter and its strong. Will go through and check starter wiring but it all looks good. My fear is that I fried the starter, when the I turned the key that time after the flickering of the glow light didn't feel right at all. Any other thoughts is greatly appreciated. Looked the engine no up and its a 200tdi from 12L which is from a Series 1 Discovery (1989-1994). Thanks for thoughts, need to get this thing started in a day or two. Supplies are running low...
  12. Starting to get cold and knew I had a weak battery so decided to get a new one and put it in, turned the key, cold start lamp came on and went away and the truck fired right up - feeling good about my new reliable battery I go inside to come out the next morning..... Key in ignition, the yellow cold start comes on and then flickers (almost like something got fried) and then nothing... Won't turn over at all. All lights work, gauges, etc. But the engine......silence.... I've checked the terminals they look good, shortened one on new fresh copper. Did the start engine fry? A fuse? Any thoughts is greatly appreciated. I'm alone and this is my only car - food supplies will last apx 3 more days :-)
