  1. Thanks guys, I've tried to tackle it again this morning and I can lift the extension enough to see the U cup holder ( in yellow in the initial pic) has moved as I can see the locating dimple on the selector shaft, but I am unable to lift the gear box extension enough to uncouple the male and female components as the blue line (top of the extension) clashes with the red line ( bottom of the cross member). I think my only option is to remove the cross member to gain access and pop rivet it back in place. Removing the gearbox mounts sounds like quite a big job and my car is parked on the road with quite a bit of camber on it so that wouldn't be very sturdy. I just wondered if there was a secret way of sorting this as it seems to be a relatively common problem that in theory is a simple fix, but you have to remove quite a lot of stuff to get there. I guess that is what I have signed up for when buying a defender. When I reinstall the extension I assume I should be putting some sealant/ liquid gasket between the two metal parts, is there something specific I should be using. Thanks once again and excuse my ignorance, and sorry to keep going on, just wanted to check before taking a drill to the car.
  2. Thank you, and thanks for your swift reply! Sorry, just to clarify the first picture is taken from the internet just to help with the explanation of my issue. The second picture is from inside my car showing the lack of room for movement between the gearbox extension and the cross member on the seat box. I haven't been able to access this yet. I can't seem to gain enough space to remove the gearbox extension to allow me to access the grub screw, I have removed all 4 bolts and tried to lift the gearbox extension but it fouls of the cross member.
  3. Hi guys, I'm pretty new to the land of defenders, however I have recently had the pleasure of trying to repair mine! I have a TD5 with an R380 gear box. It appears the grub screw holding the U fitting highlighted in yellow has come undone and I therefore can't select any gears. The car is currently outside my house and I don't have a garage. I was told to undo the four bolts highlighted in red circles and I should be able to remove the gear box extension, access the grub screw to apply some locktight and tighten it up. I have removed all the carpets, the transmission tunnel and the four bolts and I don't have enough space to remove the gear box extension, see below. Once I realised this I thought I might be able to undo all the bolts holding the seatbox down and wedge it up to allow myself enough room to access what I need, however, due to the fact it is a defender the bolts are extremely rusty and the first few I tried snapped, so this would take me an age to remove everything! My other option is to remove the spot welds from the cross member to allow my access, complete the repair and then pop rivet the cross member back in place. I just wanted to see if I had any other options before starting the drill out all the spot welds. Also, I wondered what sealant I should be using when reinstalling the gear box extension. Thanks for you help in advance and my apologies if it isn't very clear, this is no doubt my first of many post regarding repairing a defender!
