Thanks again, I think I will change the whole thing, it's pretty old, good time to change the belts too.

Thank you both, forgot to say that the light goes out when the engine is running, does that change your diagnosis?

The title says nearly everything but when I turn the ignition to on it goes out and the other warning lights come on. Is it a short?
