Just to post a follow-up: everything is good now. The solution was to rotate the FIP clockwise a bit with a wrench and the pin went right in.
With that done, all the marks were spot on and I changed the tensioner, idler, crank pulley and crank seal and finally put a new belt on. I tensioned it, rotated it twice, and the pin went in beautifully with all the other marks spot on as well.
Hello all. I'm replacing the timing belt in my new-to-me 1997 Defender 110 300tdi. I have gotten all the timing marks to align and have the pin in the flywheel, with one exception: the pin for injection pump only fits smoothly if I advance the crank a tooth off. I have loosened the three bolts on the pump, and even the play that allows isn't enough to get the pin into the pump.
I am fairly certain that it wasn't timed up correctly when the belt was last removed. I am at a loss as to how to correct this. Thus far I haven't taken any action, but I see my two options are either: 1) remove the center bolt on the pump gear and adjust it so the pin fits in or 2) rotate the pump gear without moving the center bolt. I don't know if either of those are the right way to approach this. I have never worked on a diesel engine before and fully confess I am now in uncharted waters for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
