  1. Just to post a follow-up: everything is good now. The solution was to rotate the FIP clockwise a bit with a wrench and the pin went right in. With that done, all the marks were spot on and I changed the tensioner, idler, crank pulley and crank seal and finally put a new belt on. I tensioned it, rotated it twice, and the pin went in beautifully with all the other marks spot on as well.
  2. Hello all. I'm replacing the timing belt in my new-to-me 1997 Defender 110 300tdi. I have gotten all the timing marks to align and have the pin in the flywheel, with one exception: the pin for injection pump only fits smoothly if I advance the crank a tooth off. I have loosened the three bolts on the pump, and even the play that allows isn't enough to get the pin into the pump. I am fairly certain that it wasn't timed up correctly when the belt was last removed. I am at a loss as to how to correct this. Thus far I haven't taken any action, but I see my two options are either: 1) remove the center bolt on the pump gear and adjust it so the pin fits in or 2) rotate the pump gear without moving the center bolt. I don't know if either of those are the right way to approach this. I have never worked on a diesel engine before and fully confess I am now in uncharted waters for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
